Thermodynamic approach of supercontinuum generation

2009

International audience; This paper is aimed at providing an overview on recent theoretical and experimental works in which a thermodynamic description of the incoherent regime of supercontinuum generation has been formulated. On the basis of the wave turbulence theory, we show that this highly nonlinear and quasi-continuous-wave regime of supercontinuum generation is characterized by two different phenomena. (i) A process of optical wave thermalization ruled by the four-wave mixing effects: The spectral broadening inherent to supercontinuum generation is shown to result from the natural tendency of the optical field to reach its thermodynamic equilibrium state, i. e., the state of maximum n…

<title>Holographic recording in amorphous semiconductor films</title>

1997

The present state of the real time holographic recording in amorphous semiconductor films is reviewed including mechanisms, parameters, properties and applications. Effects of the coherent, incoherent and relaxational self- enhancement as well as the influence of the film structure relaxation are considered. Quasi-permanent sub-band-gap light holographic recording is reported for the first time. 157

Wavelength-compensated time-sequential multiplexed color joint transform correlator

2010

We report a wavelength-compensated three-channel (RGB) joint transform correlator (JTC) for color pattern recognition using a ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) operating in binary pure phase modulation. We apply a previously reported time-multiplexing technique useful in creating wavelength-compensated diffraction patterns, based on the synchronization of properly scaled diffraction masks with the input wavelength selection obtained by applying a rotating RGB color-filter wheel to an Ar-Kr laser. The application of this technique to a JTC architecture permits real-time color object detection. In order to achieve a high light efficiency for the correlation process, w…

Parallel laser micromachining based on diffractive optical elements with dispersion compensated femtosecond pulses

2013

We experimentally demonstrate multi-beam high spatial resolution laser micromachining with femtosecond pulses. The effects of chromatic aberrations as well as pulse stretching on the material processed due to diffraction were significantly mitigated by using a suited dispersion compensated module (DCM). This permits to increase the area of processing in a factor 3 in comparison with a conventional setup. Specifically, 52 blind holes have been drilled simultaneously onto a stainless steel sample with a 30 fs laser pulse in a parallel processing configuration.

Super-resolved Imaging based upon spatial depolarization of light

2010

In this paper we present a new approach allowing the surpassing of the diffraction based limitation for the achievable resolution provided by imaging systems. It is based on an encoding-decoding process of various spatial pixels or regions in the field of view of the imaged object by orthogonal and differently time varying polarization states. The reconstruction of the original spatial information is obtained by applying a decoding process in a way similar to the encoding one. Although all the spatial information is summed and mixed together by the system, the decoding provides super resolved imaging since in every spatial position the undesired spatial information having time varying polar…

Generation of Bessel beam arrays through Dammann gratings.

2012

In this work we apply the Dammann grating concept to generate an equal-intensity square array of Bessel quasi-free diffraction beams that diverge from a common center. We generate a binary phase mask that combines the axicon phase with the phase of a Dammann grating. The procedure can be extended to include vortex spiral phases that generate an array of optical pipes. Experimental results are provided by means of a twisted nematic liquid crystal display operating as a binary π phase spatial light modulator.

Recent Advances in 3D Structured Illumination Microscopy

2018

In structured illumination microscopy (SIM) the sample under investigation is illuminated using a structured illumination (SI) pattern. This SI pattern encodes high spatial frequencies of fine features within the sample, which usually are not transferred by the conventional three-dimensional (3D) optical transfer function (OTF) of the imaging system and fills the missing cone of frequencies in the OTF for better discrimination of the out-of-focus light. Thereby, SIM provides super-resolution (SR) performance beyond the diffraction limit and optical-sectioning (OS) capability with the use of data post-processing approaches. 3D structured patterns that include lateral and axial variations in …

Investigating the performance of reconstruction methods used in structured illumination microscopy as a function of the illumination pattern's modula…

2016

Surpassing the resolution of optical microscopy defined by the Abbe diffraction limit, while simultaneously achieving optical sectioning, is a challenging problem particularly for live cell imaging of thick samples. Among a few developing techniques, structured illumination microscopy (SIM) addresses this challenge by imposing higher frequency information into the observable frequency band confined by the optical transfer function (OTF) of a conventional microscope either doubling the spatial resolution or filling the missing cone based on the spatial frequency of the pattern when the patterned illumination is two-dimensional. Standard reconstruction methods for SIM decompose the low and hi…

Geometrical super resolved lensless imaging

2011

In the field of super resolution researchers are trying to overcome both the diffraction as well as the geometrical bounds of an imaging system. In this paper we present a recently developed approach that aims to overcome the geometrical bounds while using a unified spatial light modulator (SLM) based lensless configuration.

Diffraction-free propagation of subwavelength light beams in layered media

2010

Self-collimation of tightly localized laser beams demonstrated in periodic media relies on a perfect-matched rephasing of the Fourier constituents of the wavefield induced by a plane isofrequency curve. An alternate way paved for the achievement of such a phase matching condition developed a suitable spatial filtering in order to select those frequencies experiencing the same phase velocity projected over a given orientation. In principle this procedure is valid for complex structured metamaterials. However, a great majority of studies have focused on free-space propagation leading to the well-known Bessel beams. This paper is devoted to the analysis of this sort of nondiffracting beams tra…
