Country-specific correlations across Europe between modelled atmospheric cadmium and lead deposition and concentrations in mosses

2012

Previous analyses at the European scale have shown that cadmium and lead concentrations in mosses are primarily determined by the total deposition of these metals. Further analyses in the current study show that Spearman rank correlations between the concentration in mosses and the deposition modelled by the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) are country and metal-specific. Significant positive correlations were found for about two thirds or more of the participating countries in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 (except for Cd in 1990). Correlations were often not significant and sometimes negative in countries where mosses were only sampled in a relatively small number of EMEP gr…

Global stability analysis of a delay cell-population model of hepatitis B infection with humoral immune response

2021

In this work, we propose and investigate a delay cell population model of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. We suppose spatial diffusion of free HBV particles, and use a Beddington-DeAngelis incid...

Hepatitis B core particles as a universal display model: a structure-function basis for development

1999

AbstractBecause it exhibits a remarkable capability to accept mutational intervention and undergo correct folding and self-assembly in all viable prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems, hepatitis B core (HBc) protein has been favored over other proposed particulate carriers. Structurally, the unusual α-helical organization of HBc dimeric units allows introduction of foreign peptide sequences into several areas of HBc shells, including their most protruding spikes. Progress toward full resolution of the spatial structure as well as accumulation of chimeric HBc-based structures has brought closer the knowledge-based design of future vaccines, gene therapy tools and other artificial par…

Spatial Structures of the Philippines: Urbanization and Regional Inequalities

2017

This chapter examines the fundamental spatial structures of the Philippines. It defines the role and organization of the different levels of the administrative hierarchy (provinces, regions, cities and municipalities) down to the barangay and sitio/purok levels. This leads to the definition of the “urban” in the Philippines and the rise of urbanization in recent decades, from the original urban settlements of the Spanish era, with their patterns following the same rules as in Latin America (fort, church and plaza), to today’s cities. Forms of housing have evolved over time, from the archetypal bamboo/nipa hut (bahay kubo) and the urban stone and wood house of the elites (bahay na bato), now…

Spatial identification of the overionized plasma in W49B

2010

Recent Suzaku X-ray observations of the ejecta-dominated supernova remnant W49B have shown that in the global spectrum there is a clear indication for the presence of overionized plasma whose physical origin is still under debate. In order to ascertain the physical origin of such a rapidly cooling plasma, we focus on the study of its spatial localization within the X-ray emitting ejecta. We confirm the presence of a saw-edged excess (interpreted as a strong radiative recombination continuum) in the global spectrum above 8 keV, emerging above the ionization-equilibrium model. We produce a hardness ratio map to determine where the plasma is overionized and we perform a spectral analysis of th…

Innovation and R&D spillover effects in Spanish regions: A spatial approach

2007

Abstract This paper analyses the spatial patterns of innovation, its regional interdependencies and evolution, as well as its role in determining local innovation in Spanish regions. Results indicate the suitability of a trade-based regional proximity when considering spatial spillovers in innovation. In this context, not only local capacity is relevant in determining domestic innovation, but also spatial innovation spillovers, which result mainly from efforts in both higher education and public administration. Moreover, a minimum level of regional development is required to improve the effectiveness of R&D policies. Therefore, it is necessary for R&D policies to act in combination with oth…

The precious treasure of Mariano Valenza: The history of Ludovico Sicardi and the birth of geochemical volcano monitoring

2020

I was lucky enough to meet Mariano Valenza in September 1995. I was hitchhiking on the highway that leads from Cefalu to Palermo to go back home. I had spent my summer holidays in the beautiful and wild Madonie mountains. An off-road vehicle (a Land Rover Defender) stopped and a refined gentleman with a curious and charismatic gaze offered me a ride. During our journey, we chatted pleasantly and he told he was originally from that area. When I told him, I was a Geology student, he smiled at me and said Then we will meet again soon, I am going to be your Teacher of Geochemistry!. After a few weeks the lessons began and I met again Professor Valenza in Via Archirafi 36, at the University of P…

Drawing and Project at the VChUTEMAS. Graphic Interpretations

2019

The article deals with the graphic study of the project for the Kominern Palace designed in 1929 by Lidija Komarova, one of the students of the Russian Laboratories known by the acronym VChUTEMAS, founded in 1920 in Moscow. Strongly characterized by the revolutionary atmosphere that was delineating the artistic progress based on the synthesis of all the plastic arts, the Russian Laboratories attributed to the architecture a position of the first order, a perfect association between the scientific possibility and the art technique. The redrawing of this project allows to deepen the compositional principles of the new architectural formation of the Eastern European avant-garde, providing digi…

Spatial history: railways, uneven development and population change in France and Great Britain, 1850-1914

2011

International audience; A comparative spatial history combining historical narrative, geographical thinking, and spatial analysis of historical data offers new perspectives on railway expansion and its effects in France and Great Britain during the long nineteenth century. Accessible rail transport in the rural regions of both countries opened new economic opportunities in agriculture, extractive industries, and service trades, helping to revitalize rural communities and decrease their rates of out-migration. In France, long-standing economic disparities between the developed north and the less-productive south gradually reduced. These conclusions are based, in part, on the use of historica…

Mapping the Distortions in Time and Space: The French Railway Network 1830–1930

2013

International audience; Accessibility is frequently used in transportation planning to measure the efficiency of new infrastructure in terms of travel time and population served. In this article, the authors apply accessibility concepts based on the geo-historical angle. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between population dynamics and the railway expansion from 1830 to 1930. Their approach considers a local scale composed of some 36,000 French communes for the demographic data and more than 28,000 kilometers for the railway network. The methodological framework of this database is based on historical geographic information systems completed by anamorphosis analysis.…
