The physical activity patterns of adolescents with intellectual disabilities: A descriptive study

Abstract Background Emerging data suggest that adolescents with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have lower physical activity (PA) levels and have a higher incidence of obesity than their peers without IDs. Objective To examine daily PA patterns (weekdays vs. weekend days) of adolescents with IDs among boys and girls. Psychological and physical well-being in hearing-impaired children

Summary Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological and physical well-being in 6–11-year-old hearing-impaired children. Methods The cohort consisted of 70 boys and 61 girls who either attended a special school for deaf children ( n  = 78) or a mainstream school ( n  = 53). We used the FKSI (Frankfurt Self-Concept Scales for Children). Results Children in special schools saw themselves in a less favourable light than children in mainstream schools. They were less confident and less assertive. They reached lower scores in making friends, and were more anxious and sad. Scores on test of gross motor development of children with dysphasia: a pilot study.

The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to assess the gross motor skill and trainability of children with dysphasia using the Test of Gross Motor Development. 27 children from 7 to 12 years ( M = 9.6 yr., SD=1.3) from four different classes in one special school participated. The gross motor skill scores of a sample of children with dysphasia, their trainability of the gross motor skills, and the intrarater reliability of the test were examined. Based on the videotaped performances the intrarater reliability was .93 to .97 for total scores, but lower for individual test items. The role of music in the development of children with Down syndrome: a systematic review

Music is commonly used in special education to achieve developmental and therapeutic aims, often in people with special needs. The present article conducts a systematic review of results from previous studies that explore the role of music in the development of children with Down syndrome (DS). It analyses a sample of 19 articles, in English and Spanish, from several databases (ERIC, Scopus, SciELO, Dialnet, Web of Science, CSIC and Pubmed). The purpose of this study was to examine the different types and patterns of 1:1 interactions provided by general educators, special educators and paraprofessionals to children with mild disabilities (n = 13), severe disabilities (n = 13), and children without disabilities (n = 13) in inclusive classrooms. The main aim of this study was to investigate how Finnish pre-service special needs teachers’ (N = 134) assessment conceptions, prior academic studies in special education and teaching experience together cluster into different patterns representing different student types.
