Phylogenetic relationship of the green alga Nanochlorum eukaryotum deduced from its chloroplast rRNA sequences.

The marine green coccoidal alga Nanochlorum eukaryotum (N.e.) is of small size with an average diameter of 1.5 microns. It is characterized by primitive-appearing biochemical and morphological properties, which are considerably different from those of other green algae. Thus, it has been proposed that N.e. may be an early developed algal form. To prove this hypothesis, DNA of N.e. was isolated by a phenol extraction procedure, and the chloroplast DNA separated by preparative CsCl density-gradient centrifugation. Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of the enantiomers of monoterpene-based β-amino acid derivatives

Abstract The regio- and stereospecific addition of chlorosulfonyl isocyanate to cis-δ-pinene enantiomers has furnished monoterpene-fused β-lactams. The observed regioselectivity can be explained by ab initio DFT modeling of transition state structures. In contrast with the less reactive α-pinane-fused β-lactam 4, the resulting β-lactams 5 and 13 containing an amino group connected to a secondary carbon possess similar reactivity to the cycloalkane-fused analogues and can be easily converted to the β-amino acid and its protected derivatives. The base-catalyzed isomerization of the cis-amino ester afforded the corresponding trans-amino ester in moderate yield.

Automatic detection of large dense-core vesicles in secretory cells and statistical analysis of their intracellular distribution.

Analyzing the morphological appearance and the spatial distribution of large dense-core vesicles (granules) in the cell cytoplasm is central to the understanding of regulated exocytosis. This paper is concerned with the automatic detection of granules and the statistical analysis of their spatial locations in different cell groups. We model the locations of granules of a given cell as a realization of a finite spatial point process and the point patterns associated with the cell groups as replicated point patterns of different spatial point processes. Production of sulfur flavors by ten strains of Geotrichum candidum

ABSTRACT Ten strains of Geotrichum candidum were studied on a liquid cheese model medium for the production of sulfur compounds which contribute to the aroma of cheeses. The volatile components produced by each cultured strain were extracted by dynamic headspace extractions, separated and quantified by gas chromatography (GC), and identified by GC-mass spectrometry. It was shown that four strains of this microorganism produced significant quantities of S -methyl thioacetate, S -methyl thiopropionate, S -methyl thiobutanoate, S -methyl thio iso butanoate, S -methyl thio iso valerate, and S -methyl thiohexanoate. Gas chromatographic analysis of resveratrol in plasma, lipoproteins and cells after in vitro incubations

Resveratrol is a trihydroxystilbene present in certain red wines. It may play a role in the inhibition of lipoprotein oxidation and platelet activity. We have developed the first method to measure resveratrol in animal and human samples and to study its incorporation in vitro. After adding epicoprostanol as an internal standard, samples are subjected to lipid extraction in the presence of antioxidant and under dim light to minimize both denaturation and isomerization of the trans-resveratrol to the cis-form. Chemotaxonomic value of the essential oil compounds in species of Teucrium pumilum aggregate

Volatile compounds from the aerial parts of Teucrium lepicephalum Pau and Teucrium carolipaui C. Vicioso ex Pau, both belonging to the Teucrium pumilum aggregate, were analysed by capillary GC and GC-MS. From the common and specific compounds (mono- and sesquiterpenes) of the two taxa, chemical characterization was carried out and taxonomic relationships were assessed. Application of the cluster and k-means discriminant analysis shows a differential chemical relationship between T. lepicephalum and Teucrium carolipaui.

Chiral determination of amphetamine and related compounds using chloroformates for derivatization and high-performance liquid chromatography

The enantiomeric determination of amphetamine and various amphetamine-type compounds by liquid chromatography after chiral derivatization with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate-L-proline (FMOC-L-Pro) is reported. The results obtained were compared with those achieved after achiral derivatization with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate and subsequent separation of the derivatives on a beta-cyclodextrin chiral stationary phase. A method for the extraction of clenbuterol from calf urine samples using a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) has been developed. The aim was that the final extracts from the MIP should allow quantitation of clenbuterol down to 0.5 ng/mL urine using HPLC with UV detection. The MIP was produced using brombuterol as a template and the selectivity of the MIP, for clenbuterol, was tested against a non-imprinted polymer (produced without template) and was found to be high.
