Extending the Unmixing methods to Multispectral Images

2021

In the past few decades, there has been intensive research concerning the Unmixing of hyperspectral images. Some methods such as NMF, VCA, and N-FINDR have become standards since they show robustness in dealing with the unmixing of hyperspectral images. However, the research concerning the unmixing of multispectral images is relatively scarce. Thus, we extend some unmixing methods to the multispectral images. In this paper, we have created two simulated multispectral datasets from two hyperspectral datasets whose ground truths are given. Then we apply the unmixing methods (VCA, NMF, N-FINDR) to these two datasets. By comparing and analyzing the results, we have been able to demonstrate some…

Towards combined multispectral, FLIM and Raman imaging for skin diagnostics

2020

To explore challenges for further improvement of diagnostic performance, a project aimed at development of technology for tri-modal skin imaging by combining multispectral, fluorescence lifetime and Raman band imaging was initiated. In this study, each of the mentioned imaging modalities has been preliminary tested and updated. Four different multispectral imaging devices were tested on color standards. Picosecond laser-excited fluorescence lifetime imaging equipment was examined on ex-vivo skin samples. Finally, a new Raman spectroscopy setup with 785 nm laser was launched and tested on cell cultures and ex-vivo skin. Advantages and specific features of the tri-modal skin imaging are discu…

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operated spectral camera system for forest and agriculture applications

2011

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) based hyperspectral imager compatible with the light weight UAV platforms. The concept of the hyperspectral imager has been published in the SPIE Proc. 7474 and 7668. In forest and agriculture applications the recording of multispectral images at a few wavelength bands is in most cases adequate. The possibility to calculate a digital elevation model of the forest area and crop fields provides means to estimate the biomass and perform forest inventory. The full UAS multispectral imaging system will consist of a high resolution false color imager and a FPI based hyperspectral imager which can be used at …

Early detection of mechanical damage in mango using NIR hyperspectral images and machine learning

2014

Mango fruit are sensitive and can easily develop brown spots after suffering mechanical stress during postharvest handling, transport and marketing. The manual inspection of this fruit used today cannot detect the damage in very early stages of maturity and to date no automatic tool capable of such detection has been developed, since current systems based on machine vision only detect very visible damage. The application of hyperspectral imaging to the postharvest quality inspection of fruit is relatively recent and research is still underway to find a method of estimating internal properties or detecting invisible damage. This work describes a new system to evaluate mechanically induced da…

HyperLabelMe : A Web Platform for Benchmarking Remote-Sensing Image Classifiers

2017

HyperLabelMe is a web platform that allows the automatic benchmarking of remote-sensing image classifiers. To demonstrate this platform's attributes, we collected and harmonized a large data set of labeled multispectral and hyperspectral images with different numbers of classes, dimensionality, noise sources, and levels. The registered user can download training data pairs (spectra and land cover/use labels) and submit the predictions for unseen testing spectra. The system then evaluates the accuracy and robustness of the classifier, and it reports different scores as well as a ranked list of the best methods and users. The system is modular, scalable, and ever-growing in data sets and clas…

Estimating the phenological dynamics of irrigated rice leaf area index using the combination of PROSAIL and Gaussian Process Regression

2021

The growth of rice is a sequence of three different phenological phases. This sequence of change in rice phenology implies that the condition of the plant during the vegetative phase relates directly to the health of leaves functioning during the reproductive and ripening phases. As such, accurate monitoring is important towards understanding rice growth dynamics. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is an important indicator of rice yields and the availability of this information during key phenological phases can support more informed farming decisions. Satellite remote sensing has been adopted as a proxy to field measurements of LAI and with the launch of freely available high resolution Satellite imag…

Comparative study of multi-2D, Full 3D and hybrid strategies for multi/hyperspectral image compression

2009

In this paper, we investigate appropriate strategies for multi/hyperspectral image compression. In particular, we compare the classic multi-2D compression strategy and two different implementations of 3D strategies (Full 3D and hybrid). All strategies are combined with a PCA decorrelation stage to optimize performance. For multi-2D and hybrid strategies, we propose a weighted version of PCA. Finally, for consistent evaluation, we propose a larger comparison framework than the conventionally used PSNR. The results are significant and show the weaknesses and strengths of each strategy.

A Database of Spectral Filter Array Images that Combine Visible and NIR

2017

International audience; Spectral filter array emerges as a multispectral imaging technology, which could benefit several applications. Although several instantiations are prototyped and commercialized, there are yet only a few raw data available that could serve research and help to evaluate and design adequate related image processing and algorithms. This document presents a freely available spectral filter array database of images that combine visible and near infra-red information.

Regularized multiresolution spatial unmixing for ENVISAT/MERIS and landsat/TM image fusion

2011

Earth observation satellites currently provide a large volume of images at different scales. Most of these satellites provide global coverage with a revisit time that usually depends on the instrument characteristics and performance. Typically, medium-spatial-resolution instruments provide better spectral and temporal resolutions than mapping-oriented high-spatial-resolution multispectral sensors. However, in order to monitor a given area of interest, users demand images with the best resolution available, which cannot be reached using a single sensor. In this context, image fusion may be effective to merge information from different data sources. In this letter, an image fusion approach ba…

Hyperspectral Image Classification with Kernels

2007

The information contained in hyperspectral images allows the characterization, identification, and classification of land covers with improved accuracy and robustness. However, several critical problems should be considered in the classification of hyperspectral images, among which are (a) the high number of spectral channels, (b) the spatial variability of the spectral signature, (c) the high cost of true sample labeling, and (d) the quality of data. Recently, kernel methods have offered excellent results in this context. This chapter reviews the state-of-the-art hyperspectral image classifiers, presents two recently proposed kernel-based approaches, and systematically discusses the specif…
