Study of the germanium luminescence in silica: from non-controlled impurity to germano-silicate core of telecommunication fiber preforms

Abstract We have studed luminescence properties of doped silica with different concentrations of germanium. The basic luminescence parameters such as spectral dependencies, decay kinetics and polarization at different temperatures were measured. Three spectral ranges 3.5–5.5 eV(I), 5.5–7 eV(II), 7–8 eV(III) in the optical transparency range of silica could be chosen from these data. Range I possesses a weak variation of basic parameters of luminescence of the germanium related oxygen deficient center with the change of luminescence center concentration from extremely low in pure silica to the germano-silica core of optical telecommunication fiber preforms. Luminescence study of defects in synthetic as-grown and HPHT diamonds compared to natural diamonds

The optically active defects in as-grown, high-pressure high-temperature-treated (HPHT), boron-doped, and synthetic diamonds (SD) grown with a nitrogen-getter, as well as of natural diamonds (ND), were characterized by absorption and luminescence spectroscopies using different excitation sources. The laser-excited photoluminescence (PL) spectra of SDs show numerous sharp lines characteristic for nickel-related centers, whereas NDs yield mainly broad PL bands. The emission from the nickel-related defects in NIR range increases and the maxima of the bands shift to lower energies with increasing temperature. Infrared and optical observations of the newly identified Be/X-ray binary LSI + 61 235

Observational (IR) and optical data are presented of the newly discovered Be/X-ray binary system LSI + 61° 235, taken over the period 1991 August – 1992 May. Though the IR shows little evidence for any changes, the optical Hα spectrum has undergone substantial modification. Combination of optical photometric measurements with the IR photometry allows the overall spectrum to be investigated and the existence of the Be star’s circumstellar disc to be directly confirmed.
The cool Galactic R Coronae Borealis variable DY Persei

Results of first CCD photometry during the recent deep light decline, and high-resolution spectroscopy, are presented for DY Persei. The spectra show variable blueshifted features in the sodium D lines. The C lines are strong whereas neutron- capture elements are not enhanced. The isotopic 13 CN(2, 0) lines relative to 12 CN are of similar strength with those for the carbon star U Hya. All these confirm the RCB nature of DY Per and the existence of ejected clouds. At least two clouds are revealed at −197.3 and −143.0 km s −1 . A star was detected about 0. 4t o the west and 2 . 5 to the north from DY Per. Today's digital electronics and fast computers allow the efficiently processing of large volumes of spectroscopic information, which means the opportunity to reuse and upgrade monochromator with sophisticated optical and mechanical systems being designed and used in the middle of the last century. Particular interest is towards high-resolution prism monochromator. We used such an approach to computerize manual operations of universal mirror monochromator SPM-2, which has changeable quartz, glass, NaCl and KBr crystal prisms. $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs) are short-lived transients releasing a large amount of energy ($10^{51}-10^{53} $ erg) in the keV-MeV energy range. GRBs are thought to originate from internal dissipation of the energy carried by ultra-relativistic jets launched by the remnant of a massive star's death or a compact binary coalescence. While thousands of GRBs have been observed over the last thirty years, we still have an incomplete understanding of where and how the radiation is generated in the jet. Reflection component in the Bright Atoll Source GX 9+9

GX 9+9 (4U 1728-16) is a low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) source harboring a neutron star. Although it belongs to the subclass of the bright Atoll sources together with GX 9+1, GX 3+1, and GX 13+1, its broadband spectrum is poorly studied and apparently does not show reflection features in the spectrum. To constrain the continuum well and verify whether a relativistic smeared reflection component is present, we analyze the broadband spectrum of GX 9+9 using {\it BeppoSAX} and \textit{XMM-Newton} spectra covering the 0.3-40 keV energy band. We fit the spectrum adopting a model composed of a disk-blackbody plus a Comptonized component whose seed photons have a blackbody spectrum (Eastern Model). …
QUADRUPOLAR CHARACTER OF THE Ti K-EDGE PREPEAKS IN TiO2 BY RESONANT AUGER

Resonant spectroscopies offer a new opportunity to get more insight into excited electronic states by studying line shapes and intensities of decay processes. For photon excitations in the pre-K-edge region, the Ti KL 2,3 L 2,3 Auger spectra in TiO 2 show additional peaks when an electron is promoted in localized d-like states via a quadrupolar transition. This resonant process is used to unravel the respective contributions of quadrupolar and dipolar transitions to the absorption edge prepeaks.
Tailoring the transmittance of integrated optical waveguides with short metallic nanoparticle chains

We study the ability of noble metal nanoparticle chains supporting localized surface plasmons to tailor the transmittance of channel waveguides on which they are deposited. The optical interaction between a microwaveguide ~MWG! and various arrangements of nanoparticles is first analyzed by means numerical calculations based on the Green’s tensor formalism. For specific geometries of the particle chains, the transmission spectra of the composite device ~MWG and nanoparticles! exhibits strong modulations in the optical range with the appearance of a neat band gap. Quantification of spatial inhomogeneity in perovskite solar cells by hyperspectral luminescence imaging

Vacuum evaporated perovskite solar cells with a power conversion efficiency of 15% have been characterized using hyperspectral luminescence imaging. Hyperspectral luminescence imaging is a novel technique that offers spectrally resolved photoluminescence and electroluminescence maps (spatial resolution is 2 micrometer) on an absolute scale. This allows, using the generalized Planck’s law, the construction of absolute maps of the depth-averaged quasi-Fermi level splitting (Δμ), which determines the maximum achievable open circuit voltage (Voc) of the solar cells.
