First Multi-wavelength Campaign on the Gamma-ray-loud Active Galaxy IC 310

The extragalactic VHE gamma-ray sky is rich in blazars. These are jetted active galactic nuclei viewed at a small angle to the line-of-sight. Only a handful of objects viewed at a larger angle are known so far to emit above 100 GeV. Multi-wavelength studies of such objects up to the highest energies provide new insights into the particle and radiation processes of active galactic nuclei. We report the results from the first multi-wavelength campaign observing the TeV detected nucleus of the active galaxy IC 310, whose jet is observed at a moderate viewing angle of 10 deg - 20 deg. Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been detected in the high-quality X-ray spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with fairly high accretion rates and are thought to significantly contribute to the AGN feedback. After a decade of dedicated study, their launching mechanisms and structure are still not well understood, but variability techniques may provide useful constraints. In this work, therefore, we perform a flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on a highly accreting and variable NLS1 AGN, 1H 0707-495, using all archival XMM-Newton observations to study the structure of the UFO. Jet-torus connection in radio galaxies

High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of active galactic nuclei have revealed asymmetric structures in the jets of radio galaxies. These asymmetric structures may be due to internal asymmetries in the jet, could be induced by the different conditions in the surrounding ambient medium including the obscuring torus, or a combination of the two. The ARGO-YBJ experiment has monitored Mrk 501 for γ - rays above 0.3 TeV since 2007 November. The largest flare since 2005 was observed from 2011 October and lasted until about 2012 April. Active learning deals with developing methods that select examples that may express data characteristics in a compact way. For remote sensing image segmentation, the selected samples are the most informative pixels in the image so that classifiers trained with reduced active datasets become faster and more robust. Abstract The two-source energy balance (TSEB) model uses remotely sensed maps of land–surface temperature (LST) along with local air temperature estimates at a nominal blending height to model heat and water fluxes across a landscape, partitioned between dual sources of canopy and soil. Portfolio performance evaluation with loss aversion

In this paper we consider a loss-averse investor equipped with a specific, but still quite general, utility function motivated by behavioral finance. We show that, under certain concrete assumptions concerning the form of this utility, one can derive closed-form solutions for the investor's portfolio performance measure. We investigate the effects of loss aversion and demonstrate its important role in performance measurement. The framework presented in this paper also provides a sound theoretical foundation for all known performance measures based on partial moments of the distribution.
Noncontact monitoring of vascular lesion phototherapy efficiency by RGB multispectral imaging.

A prototype low-cost RGB imaging system consisting of a commercial RGB CMOS sensor, RGB light-emitting diode ring light illuminator, and a set of polarizers was designed and tested for mapping the skin erythema index, in order to monitor skin recovery after phototherapy of vascular lesions, such as hemangiomas and telangiectasias. The contrast of erythema index (CEI) was proposed as a parameter for quantitative characterization of vascular lesions. Skin recovery was characterized as a decrease of the CEI value relative to the value before the treatment. This approach was clinically validated by examining 31 vascular lesions before and after phototherapy.

Purpose Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the anterior segment allows quantitative analysis of the geometry of the iris. We performed spectral domain OCT examinations in healthy emmetropic, hyperopic and myopic subjects to investigate iris curvature and its associations. Methods In a cross-sectional study, out of 4617 eyes (2309 subjects) those with refractive errors of +3 dioptres were identified by objective refraction.
