Estimation of the time lag occurring between vegetation indices and aridity indices in a Sicilian semi-arid catchment

2009

The evolution of drought phenomena in a Sicilian semi-arid catchment has been analyzed processing both remote sensing images and climatic data for the period 1985-2000. The remote sensing dataset includes Landsat TM and ETM+ multispectral images, while the climatic dataset includes monthly rainfall and air temperature. The results have been specifically discussed for areas where it is possible to neglect agricultural activities and vegetation growth is only influenced by natural forcing. The main outcome of this study is the quantification of the time lag between the remote sensing retrieved vegetation indices and the aridity indices (AIs) calculated from climatic data. Moreover the obtaine…

Spectral surface albedo over Morocco and its impact on radiative forcing of Saharan dust

2011

In May–June 2006, airborne and ground-based solar (0.3–2.2 μm) and thermal infrared (4–42 μm) radiation measurements have been performed in Morocco within the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM). Upwelling and downwelling solar irradiances have been measured using the Spectral Modular Airborne Radiation Measurement System (SMART)-Albedometer. With these data, the areal spectral surface albedo for typical surface types in southeastern Morocco was derived from airborne measurements for the first time. The results are compared to the surface albedo retrieved from collocated satellite measurements, and partly considerable deviations are observed. Using measured surface and atmospheric prope…

Saharan dust absorption and refractive index from aircraft-based observations during SAMUM 2006

2009

During the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM) conducted in summer 2006 in southeast Morocco, the complex refractive index of desert dust was determined from airborne measurements of particle size distributions and aerosol absorption coefficients at three different wavelengths in the blue (467 nm), green (530 nm) and red (660 nm) spectral regions. The vertical structure of the dust layers was analysed by an airborne high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL). The origin of the investigated dust layers was estimated from trajectory analyses, combined with Meteosat 2nd Generation (MSG) scenes and wind field data analyses. The real part n of the dust refractive index was found almost constant w…

Multi-fidelity Gaussian Process Emulation for Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Models

2023

This repository contains several datasets of spectral atmospheric transfer functions (i.e. path radiance, transmittances, spherical albedo) simulated with MODTRAN6 atmospheric radiative transfer model. The simulations are stored in hdf5 files using the Atmospheric Look-up table Generator (ALG) toolbox (https://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-13-1945-2020). Each dataset has an associated .xml file that includes the configuration of ALG/MODTRAN6 executions. All datasets include the input atmospheric/geometric variables that are summarized in the following table. Each dataset file has a random distribution (based on latin hypercube sampling) these input variables with varying number of points (e.g. train5…

Analysis of broadband surface BRDFs derived from TOA SW CERES measurements for surfaces classified by the IGBP land cover

2012

Most studies on the reflectance properties of the Earth's surface are addressed estimating the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of high spatial resolution and high spectral resolution satellite measurements. This article assesses the development of broadband (BB) BRDFs from radiances corresponding to large footprints classified according to the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) land-cover classification. Top-of-atmosphere (TOA) shortwave (SW) CERES (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System) measurements are employed to invert the bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) Rahman–Pinty–Verstraete (RPV) model for regions identified with the same IGBP typ…

Optimizing LUT-based radiative transfer model inversion for retrieval of biophysical parameters using hyperspectral data

2012

Inversion of radiative transfer models using a lookup-table (LUT) approach against hyperspectral data streams leads to retrievals of biophysical parameters such as chlorophyll content (Chl), but necessary optimization strategies are not consolidated yet. Here, various regularization options have been evaluated to the benefit of improved Chl retrieval from hyperspectral CHRIS data, being: i) the role of added noise, ii) the role of multiple best solutions, and iii) the role of applied cost functions in LUT-based inversion. By using data from the ESA-led field campaign SPARC (Barrax, Spain), it was found that introducing noise and opting for multiple best solutions in the inversion considerab…

Image simulation of geostationary sensor dedicated to ocean color

2010

A method of image simulation of geostationary sensor dedicated to ocean color for open water (case1) and coastal water (case2) is presented in this paper. This method uses HYDROLIGHT to model the radiative transfer in order to obtain the water surface radiance. MeRIS level 3 products have been used for input water components to provide a realistic spatial distribution. The atmospheric radiative transfer model and the sensor model finely lead to satellite remote sensing images. This system allows to evaluate the dynamic range of BOA and TOA radiances depending on solar and viewing angles in operational situation and latter their influence on water composition retrieval.

Quantum localization and bound state formation in Bose-Einstein condensates

2010

We discuss the possibility of exponential quantum localization in systems of ultracold bosonic atoms with repulsive interactions in open optical lattices without disorder. We show that exponential localization occurs in the maximally excited state of the lowest energy band. We establish the conditions under which the presence of the upper energy bands can be neglected, determine the successive stages and the quantum phase boundaries at which localization occurs, and discuss schemes to detect it experimentally by visibility measurements. The discussed mechanism is a particular type of quantum localization that is intuitively understood in terms of the interplay between nonlinearity and a bou…

Ab initio angle- and energy-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with time-dependent density-functional theory

2012

We present a time-dependent density-functional method able to describe the photoelectron spectrum of atoms and molecules when excited by laser pulses. This computationally feasible scheme is based on a geometrical partitioning that efficiently gives access to photoelectron spectroscopy in time-dependent density-functional calculations. By using a geometrical approach, we provide a simple description of momentum-resolved photoemission including multiphoton effects. The approach is validated by comparison with results in the literature and exact calculations. Furthermore, we present numerical photoelectron angular distributions for randomly oriented nitrogen molecules in a short near-infrared…

Argon broadening of the 13CO R(0) and R(7) transitions in the fundamental band at temperatures between 80 and 297K: comparison between experiment and…

2003

We present measurements of Ar-broadening parameters for the R(0) and R(7) lines in the fundamental band of13CO at eight temperatures from 80 to 297 K. The broadening parameters are determined by simultaneous least-squares fitting of spectra recorded using a frequency stabilized diode laser spectrometer. The comparison of the broadening parameter values for R(7) derived at room temperature and different pressures from different line profiles shows that an empirical line profile, which takes into account narrowing effects (Dicke narrowing and absorber speed dependence) but neglects any correlation between collisions, is able to describe the observed lines with constant values of the narrowing…
