On-line vapor-phase generation combined with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry

We present a critical review of on-line vapor-phase generation combined with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry for detection. We discuss different experimental approaches developed for generating the vapor phase based on different principles (e.g., thermal volatilization, acid-base, redox reaction and covalent hydride generation). Using examples of applications, we try to demonstrate the analytical potential of on-line vapor-phase generation in vibrational spectrometry in order to improve the selectivity and the sensitivity of the measurement step and to make environmentally-friendly procedures available for problem solving in the analytical laboratory. Oxide/water interfaces: how the surface chemistry modifies interfacial water properties

The organization of water at the interface with silica and alumina oxides is analysed using density functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulation (DFT-MD). The interfacial hydrogen bonding is investigated in detail and related to the chemistry of the oxide surfaces by computing the surface charge density and acidity. We find that water molecules hydrogen-bonded to the surface have different orientations depending on the strength of the hydrogen bonds and use this observation to explain the features in the surface vibrational spectra measured by sum frequency generation spectroscopy. Abstract 1- O - α - d -Glucopyranosyl- d -mannitol–ethanol (2/1), (C 12 H 24 O 11 ) 2 –C 2 H 5 OH, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 with unit cell dimensions a =11.4230(8) A, b =9.525(4) A, c =15.854(2) A, β =102.751(7)° and V =1682.4(7) A 3 , Z =2, D x =1.45 Mg m −3 , λ (Mo-K α )=0.71069 A, μ=0.128 mm −1 , F (000)=788 and T =293(2) K. Structural and electronic contributions to hyperpolarizability in methyl p-hydroxy benzoate

Abstract The single crystals of methyl p-hydroxy benzoate (MPHB) are grown from methanol solution by a low temperature solution growth technique. The SHG efficiency is tested using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser of wavelength λ at 1064 nm, which is approximately 1.2 times that of urea. Vibrational spectral analysis using NIR-FT Raman and FT-IR spectra is carried out to understand the structural and electronic contributions to hyperpolarizability in MPHB. The DFT computations are also performed at B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level to derive equilibrium geometry, vibrational wavenumbers and intensities. Raman spectroscopy of acetic acid monomer and dimers isolated in solid argon

Acetic acid (AA) monomer and its dimers were studied by means of Raman spectroscopy combined with the matrix isolation technique. All fundamental bands of CH3COOH monomer were identified, including the CH3 torsional mode. Additionally, three overtone or combination modes were observed as a result of their enhanced intensities by Fermi resonance (FR). Twenty bands of the cyclic dimer (C2h) were identified and assigned, among which appear all intermolecular modes. Bands due to two different higher energy forms of the dimer were also identified. The experimental assignments are supported by ab initio calculations. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Timolol derivatives. I. X-ray, NMR and theoretical studies of the crystallization of (S)-timolol O,O-diacetyl-l-tartaric acid monoester

Abstract The absolute configurations of (S)-timolol hemihydrate and (S)-timolol O,O-diacetyl-(R,R)-tartaric acid monoester were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. An NMR analysis based on the temperature dependence of vicinal coupling constants was carried out to characterize the conformational behaviour of the S,R,R- and R,R,R-forms in solution. The same conformation as in crystalline state was also found in solution, although with a rather low preference over some other conformations. Preliminary results about the breath of passive smokers and vapers based on the use of portable air monitoring devices

Abstract Preliminary studies were made on the effect of both, classical smoking and electronic cigarettes (ECs) vaping, based on the quality of the indoor air and the breath of passive smokers. Portable air monitoring devices were used to evaluate carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate materials (PM), formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air and breath of active and passive smokers and vapers. As preliminary results, it can be observed that the major part of PMs liberated in classical smoking and ECs vaping correspond to the lowest size, which is the most dangerous for human health. The infrared and Raman spectra of solid tridehydropeptides : influence of ΔAla and ΔPhe on the spectral profile

Abstract A series of solid tripeptides Boc-Gly-X-Gly-OMe (X = dehydroalanine (ΔAla), dehydrophenylalanine (ΔPhe)) was investigated by Raman scattering and Fourier transform infrared spectra to examine the conformational marker bands of the unsaturated residue. The observed fundamental modes gave us the opportunity to analyze structural features that change due to the substitution of Ala by ΔAla and due to the different spatial arrangement of ΔPhe ( Z and E isomers). Abstract The high resolution infrared spectrum of CH 3 D in the region from 900 to 3200 cm −1 has been analyzed on the basis of Fourier transform spectra recorded at Kitt Peak and at Giessen. A theoretical model for an effective hamiltonian in terms of irreducible tensor operators recently adapted to symmetric top molecules has been used in order to consider simultaneously all available transitions between the lowest three polyads of the molecule: the Ground State (G.S.), the Triad (three interacting fundamental bands in the 8 μm region) and the Nonad (nine interacting bands in the 4 μm region).
