CPMAS 13C NMR Characterization of Leaves and Litters from the Reafforestated Area of Mustigarufi in Sicily (Italy)

Reafforestation is generally based on the planting of exotic fast growing tree species suitable for adapting to even harsh environments. Once the introduced plants ameliorate soil conditions, they can be progressively replaced by au- tochthonous plant species. Reafforestation is applied worldwide. However, only few studies on the effect of reafforesta- tion on lands from Mediterranean regions are available. Understanding the microscopic origin of gold nanoparticle anisotropic growth from molecular dynamics simulations.

We use molecular dynamics simulations in order to understand the microscopic origin of the asymmetric growth mechanism in gold nanorods. We provide the first atomistic model of different surfaces on gold nanoparticles in a growing electrolyte solution, and we describe the interaction of the metal with the surfactants, namely, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the ions. An innovative aspect is the inclusion of the role of the surfactants, which are explicitly modeled. We find that on all the investigated surfaces, namely, (111), (110), and (100), CTAB forms a layer of distorted cylindrical micelles where channels among micelles provide direct ion access to the surface. More insight into characterization of the waterlogged wooden part of Acqualadroni Roman Rostrum by solid-state NMR

Abstract Solid-state NMR spectroscopy was applied to characterize the wooden part of a roman Rostrum recovered in the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Acqualadroni area (Messina, Italy). The Acqualadroni Rostrum has been, in the recent past, investigated to establish its provenance and conservation. In this paper, solid-state NMR was used to obtain information on the conservation state of the wood as a preliminary step for the conservation process. A wooden sample of this artifact, collected by coring, was divided in four parts in order to correlate the conservation state to the depth. Canted Antiferromagnetism on Rectangular Layers of Fe2+ in Polymorphic CaFeSeO

From stoichiometric amounts of CaO, Fe, and Se, pure powders and single crystals of quaternary Ca[FeSe2/2O2/2]∞2 can be obtained by solid-state reaction and self-flux growth, respectively. The as-synthesized compound exhibits a polymorphic crystal structure, where the two modifications have different stacking sequences of [FeSe2/2O2/2]2−∞2 layers. The two polymorphs have similar unit cells but different crystal symmetries (Cmc21 and Pnma), of which the former is non-centrosymmetric. Precision experiments on exotic nuclei at IGISOL

Abstract Cooling and trapping techniques of low-energy radioactive ion beams of refractory elements employed at the IGISOL facility are presented with emphasis on high-precision measurements of the ground state properties of exotic nuclei. The impact of the new generation Paul and Penning traps on mass measurements of short-lived nuclei is discussed with examples on precision measurements of masses of super-allowed beta emitters and neutron-rich nuclei. As a new concept the trap-assisted spectroscopy of radioactive ions is presented with applications in collinear laser spectroscopy, decay spectroscopy of isobarically purified sources and in nuclear cross-section measurements by ion counting.

Determination of the composition of isomeric mixtures of allylstannanes by means of 119Sn and 13C NMR measurements

Abstract Allylstannanes of the type Bun3Sn(C3H3) ((C3H3 = allenyl and propargyl) Me3Sn(C4H7), Bun3Sn(C4H7), Ph3Sn(C4H7), Me3Sn(C4H7)2 and Bun3Sn(C4H7)2 [C4H7 = (E)-but-2-enyl, (Z-but-2-enyl, and but-1-en-3-yl] were prepared via Grignard reactions as isomeric mixtures whose compositions can be directly determined by 119Sn and 13C NMR spectrometry. The 119Sn and 13C δ-values of all possible isomers together with the isomeric compositions of freshly prepared compounds and after isomerization in dry methanol under reflux are reported. The course of isomerization of some compounds in anhydrous methanol at room temperature or in the presence of Bu3SnCl was followed by 119Sn NMR spectrometry.

Alternating current electrogravimetry of copper electrodissolution in a sulfuric acid solution

Abstract Copper electrodissolution processes have been studied by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and ac-electrogravimetry (mass impedance). During ac-electrogravimetry acquisition, mass decreases or increases due to the electrodissolution or the electrodeposition of copper, respectively. As a result, this continuous mass drift makes impossible obtaining a true ac-electrogravimetry response unless a numerical correction was applied. It has been compared the electrochemical behavior of copper layers previously treated and other freshly deposited on the gold electrode of the quartz crystal microbalance. Synthesis and mössbauer studies of some aquo complexes of tin(IV) with crown ethers

Abstract The preparation, characterization, and 119Sn Mossbauer spectra of a number of tin(IV) complexes with cyclic polyethers are presented. With tin(IV) chloride and methyltin(IV) trichloride, 1:1 and 2:1 metal-to-crown-ether complexes are formed, while dimethyltin(IV) dichloride forms only 2:1 complexes; in every case, two water molecules are present in the solid state structure. An octahedral coordination geometry around the tin(IV) center is proposed on the basis of Mossbauer and IR spectra.

The UV fluorescence excitation and dispersed fluorescence spectra of jet-cooled p-methylaniline have been obtained for the S1←S0 transition. The main spectral bands have been assigned by comparison with those of other relevant substituted benzenes and with the help of computed vibrational frequencies. The structure of p-methylaniline in both the S0 and S1 states has been studied at ab initio quantum chemical calculations at MP2 and CIS levels of theory using the 6-31+G∗ basis sets. The phase situation and ferroelectric properties in the mixed crystals [4-NH2PyH][SbCl4(1−x)Br4x]

Abstract The group of mixed crystals of general formula: [4-APyH][SbCl4(1−x) Br4x] with x ranging from 0 to 1 was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, dilatometry and dielectric spectroscopy. The ferroelectric properties are preserved for mixed crystals with replacement fraction, x, less than 0.30. Moreover, such a substitution of the chlorine atoms by the bromine ones significantly lowers the temperature of the structural phase transition shifting it from 240 K for pure [4-APyH][SbCl4] to about 185 K for the mixed crystals richer in bromine.
