Abstract The recently presented drop-on-demand (DOD) aerosol generator overcomes some of the drawbacks of pneumatic nebulization, as its aerosol is no longer generated by gas–liquid interaction. In the current study, an advanced imaging technique is presented, based on a CCD camera equipped with magnifying telecentric optics to allow for fast, automated and precise aerosol characterization as well as fundamental studies on the droplet generation processes by means of pseudo-cinematography. An Overview of Green Analytical Techniques in the Spectrometric Analysis of Environmental and Biological Samples

ABSTRACT This literature survey presents in a nutshell different parameters for the effectiveness of the green spectrometric procedures, which have been applied to the determination of organics, inorganics, and metal ions in different matrices. The following issues were considered: the main aspects of miniaturization, reagent replacement, reduction of wastes, and on-line recovery and detoxification, which made the analytical procedures sustainable. Also, a discussion of analytical characteristics along with spectrometric methodologies and applications is included.

The importance of incorporating a waste detoxification step in analytical methodologies

The introduction of a waste detoxification step in the analytical process was highlighted using, as example, the determination of copper in pesticide formulations using electrogravimetry, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. This quantitative study showed the improvement of the previously mentioned analytical methods, from a green perspective, after addition of electrodeposition or neutralization steps to the analytical process. Based on this, the application of the eco-scale and the Green Certificate to the evaluation of these methodologies allows the method to be moved from the B and C classes to the A class.

Low-cost set-up for Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in diamond anvil cell from 4000 to 400 cm−1

An experimental set-up for Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) studies at high pressure in the mid-IR region (400–4000 cm−1) is constructed using a compact TEO-400 FTIR interferometer module and an external microscopic optical bench with cassegrain focusing objectives. Cassegrain-type reflective objectives act as an excellent beam condenser that facilitates the interfacing between FTIR spectrometer and diamond anvil cell. Time-of-flight photoemission electron microscopy – a new way to chemical surface analysis

Abstract The time structure of synchrotron radiation at BESSY I (Berlin) was utilised to operate a photoemission electron microscope in the time-of-flight mode. The electrons that are emitted from the sample surface with different energies are dispersed in a drift tube subsequent to the imaging optics. Two ways of fast image detection have been explored, a fast gated intensified CCD camera (800 ps gate time) and a special counting electronics in combination with a 3D (x,y,t)-resolving delay line detector ( time resolution ps). A Multipurpose Instrument To Measure the Vitreous Properties of Charged Colloidal Solids

We present a new high-precision light-scattering setup to study the properties of colloidal solids. It combines static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, and torsional resonance spectroscopy with a flexible and reliable preparational procedure. All three experiments can be performed quasi-simultaneously on the same mechanically undisturbed sample. Thus, unequivocal identification of glassy behavior in a comprehensive characterization dependent on interaction parameters becomes possible. A detailed description of the mechanics is given. Fe 2p photoemission magnetic dichroism with linearly polarized synchrotron radiation and with unpolarized A1 Kα radiation

We report on the measurements and analysis of Fe 2p magnetic dichroism in the angular distribution of the photoelectrons from remanently magnetized Fe(100)surfaces with unpolarized, monochromatized A1 Kα X-rays of 1486 eV energy (MDAD)and with linearly polarized synchrotron radiation of energy 800 eV (LMDAD). The two experiments verify the atomic photoionization model of (L)MDAD including the dichroism effect between field-averaged experiments of different chirality.

Recent advances in on-line solid-phase pre-concentration for inductively-coupled plasma techniques for determination of mineral elements

Abstract We provide a critical survey on recent progress in on-line solid-phase pre-concentration for inductively-coupled plasma (ICP)-based techniques for trace-level determination of metals. We highlight some of the useful solid-phase materials suitable for on-line separation and enrichment prior to ICP determination. We discuss different applications of the methods developed along with their analytical figures of merit. Finally, we sketch out future prospects in this field.
