Stability of E' centers induced by 4.7eV laser radiation in SiO2

2007

The kinetics of E' centers (silicon dangling bonds) induced by 4.7eV pulsed laser irradiation in dry fused silica was investigated by in situ optical absorption spectroscopy. The stability of the defects, conditioned by reaction with mobile hydrogen of radiolytic origin, is discussed and compared to results of similar experiments performed on wet fused silica. A portion of E' and hydrogen are most likely generated by laser-induced breaking of Si-H precursors, while an additional fraction of the paramagnetic centers arise from another formation mechanism. Both typologies of E' participate to the reaction with H_2 leading to the post-irradiation decay of the defects. This annealing process is…

Spectroscopic parameters related to non bridging oxygen hole centers in amorphous-SiO2

2005

The relationship between the luminescence at 1.9 eV and the absorption bands at 2.0 eV and at 4.8 eV were investigated in a wide variety of synthetic silica samples exposed to different gamma- and beta-ray irradiation doses. We found that the intensities of these optical bands are linearly correlated in agreement with the model in which they are assigned to a single defect. This finding allows to determine spectroscopic parameters related to optical transitions efficiency: the oscillator strength of the 4.8 eV results ~200 times higher than that of the 2.0 eV; the 1.9 eV luminescence quantum yield under 4.8 eV excitation is lower (by a factor ~3) than that under 2.0 eV excitation. These res…

Chemical-state analyses of Ni, Zn, and W ions in NiWO$_4$-ZnWO$_4$ solid solutions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

2022

The chemical states of Ni, Zn, and W in microcrystalline NiWO$_4$-ZnWO$_4$ solid solutions were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The recorded spectra of the Ni 2p, Zn 2p, and W 4f photoelectron lines and Ni L$_2$M$_{23}$M$_{45}$, Zn L$_3$M$_{45}$M$_{45}$, and W N$_4$N$_{67}$N$_{7}$ Auger-transition lines show pronounced changes with increasing Zn concentration. The positions of the resolved photoelectron and Auger-transition lines were combined to construct so-called chemical-state plots (Wagner or Auger-parameter plots) for metal ions in solid solutions. With increasing Zn concentration, the Auger parameter increases for Ni and decreases for W, thus evidencing a lowering and an…

Half-metallic ferromagnetism with high magnetic moment and high Curie temperature in Co$_2$FeSi

2006

Co$_2$FeSi crystallizes in the ordered L2$_1$ structure as proved by X-ray diffraction and M\"o\ss bauer spectroscopy. The magnetic moment of Co$_2$FeSi was measured to be about $6\mu_B$ at 5K. Magnetic circular dichroism spectra excited by soft X-rays (XMCD) were taken to determine the element specific magnetic moments of Co and Fe. The Curie temperature was measured with different methods to be ($1100\pm20$)K. Co$_2$FeSi was found to be the Heusler compound as well as the half-metallic ferromagnet with the highest magnetic moment and Curie temperature.

Quantum-well states in ultrathin Ag(111) films deposited onto H-passivated Si(111)-(1x1) surfaces

2002

Ag(111) films were deposited at room temperature onto H-passivated Si(111)-(1x1) substrates, and subsequently annealed at 300 C. An abrupt non-reactive Ag/Si interface is formed, and very uniform non-strained Ag(111) films of 6-12 monolayers have been grown. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been used to study the valence band electronic properties of these films. Well-defined Ag sp quantum-well states (QWS) have been observed at discrete energies between 0.5-2eV below the Fermi level, and their dispersions have been measured along the GammaK, GammaMM'and GammaL symmetry directions. QWS show a parabolic bidimensional dispersion, with in-plane effective mass of 0.38-0.50mo, along…

Optical absorption induced by UV laser radiation in Ge-doped amorphous silica probed by in situ spectroscopy

2007

We studied the optical absorption induced by 4.7eV pulsed laser radiation on Ge-doped a-SiO2 synthesized by a sol-gel technique. The absorption spectra in the ultraviolet spectral range were measured during and after the end of irradiation with an in situ technique, evidencing the growth of an absorption signal whose profile is characterized by two main peaks near 4.5eV and 5.7eV and whose shape depends on time. Electron spin resonance measurements performed ex situ a few hours after the end of exposure permit to complete the information acquired by optical absorption by detection of the paramagnetic Ge(1) and Ge-E' centers laser-induced in the samples.

Probing Physical Properties of Confined Fluids within Individual Nanobubbles

2008

Spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) has been used to investigate as fluidic phase in nanoubbles embedded in a metallic Pd90Pt10 matrix. Using the 1s->2p excitation of the He atoms, maps of the He distribution, in particular of its density an pressure in bubbles of different diameter have been realized, thus providing an indication of the involved bubble formation mechanism. However, the short-range Pauli repulsion mechanism between electrons on neighboring atoms seems insufficient to interpret minute variations of the local local measurements performed at the interface between the metal and the He bubble. Simul…

The effect of Cu substitution on the A1g mode of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 manganites

2003

We report on the first Raman data of Cu substituted La(1-y)Sr(y)Mn(1-x)Cu(x)O3 (0 < x < 0.10 and 0.17 < y < 0.3, accordingly in order to have the same Mn(4+)/[Mn(4+)+Mn(3+)] ratio), collected in the frequency range 100-900 cm-1 and at room temperature, with parallel and crossed polarizations of the incident and scattered light. Spectra were fitted with a Drude-Lorentz model, and peaks at 190-220 and 430 cm-1, together with two broad structures centered at near 500 and 670 cm-1, have been found. We also have observed that the A1g mode is substantially shifted with increasing Cu substitution. The A1g phonon shift is a linear function of the tolerance factor t and the rhombohedral …

Quantum Well States in Two-Dimensional Gold Clusters on MgO Thin Films

2008

The electronic structure of ultra-small Au clusters on thin MgO/Ag(001) films has been analyzed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and density functional theory. The clusters exhibit two-dimensional (2D) quantum well states, whose shapes resemble the eigen-states of a 2D electron gas confined in a parabolic potential. From the symmetries of the HOMO and LUMO of a particular cluster, its electron filling and charge state is determined. In accordance to a DFT Bader-charge analysis, aggregates containing up to twenty atoms accumulate one to four extra electrons due to a charge transfer from the MgO/Ag interface. The HOMO - LUMO gap is found to close for clusters containing between 70 and 100 a…

Probing phonon dynamics with multidimensional high harmonic carrier-envelope-phase spectroscopy

2022

We explore pump-probe high harmonic generation (HHG) from monolayer hexagonal-Boron-Nitride, where a terahertz pump excites coherent optical phonons that are subsequently probed by an intense infrared pulse that drives HHG. We find, through state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations, that the structure of the emission spectrum is attenuated by the presence of coherent phonons, and is no longer comprised of discrete harmonic orders, but rather of a continuous emission in the plateau region. The HHG yield strongly oscillates as a function of the pump-probe delay, corresponding to ultrafast changes in the lattice such as bond compression or stretching. We further show that in the regime where the…
