Evidence for eight node mixed-symmetry superconductivity in a correlated organic metal

2015

We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy on in situ cleaved single crystals of $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$…

Broadband infrared conductivity in an YBa2Cu3O6.7 thin film

2001

Infrared reflectivity of an oxygen reduced YBa2Cu3O6.7 thin film was measured in the frequency range 30 cm-1 < v < 7000 cm-1 and for temperatures 5 K < T < 300 K. At lower frequencies, 3 cm-1 < v < 40 cm-1, the complex conductivity σ*=σ1+iσ2 was measured directly using a transmission technique. Both data sets were combined to obtain the reflectivity in a broad frequency range and thus to improve substantially the quality of the Kramers-Kronig analysis at low frequencies. The analysis of the conductivity spectra reveals that the low-frequency spectral weight strongly depends on temperature directly above TC but saturates for T ≥ 150 K.

Critical Micelle Density for the Self-Assembly of Block Copolymer Surfactants in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

1999

The parameters which influence the self-assembly of molecules in solution include the temperature and solvent quality, and this study illustrates the use of these variables to regulate the degree of association of block copolymer amphiphiles in highly compressible supercritical carbon dioxide. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been used to examine the association behavior of a block copolymer containing a CO2-phobic moiety, poly(vinyl acetate), and a CO2-philic block, poly(1,1-dihydroperfluoro-octylacrylate). By adjustment of the density of the medium through pressure and temperature profiling, the self-assembly can be reversibly controlled from unimers to core−shell spherical micel…

Injection of atoms and molecules in a superfluid helium fountain: Cu and Cu2He(n) (n = 1, ..., ∞).

2011

We introduce an experimental platform designed around a thermomechanical helium fountain, which is aimed at investigating spectroscopy and dynamics of atoms and molecules in the superfluid and at its vapor interface. Laser ablation of copper, efficient cooling and transport of Cu and Cu(2) through helium vapor (1.5 K < T < 20 K), formation of linear and T-shaped Cu(2)-He complexes, and their continuous evolution into large Cu(2)-He(n) clusters and droplets are among the processes that are illustrated. Reflection is the dominant quantum scattering channel of translationally cold copper atoms (T = 1.7 K) at the fountain interface. Cu(2) dimers mainly travel through the fountain unimpeded. How…

Morphology and electronic structure of bcc Co(110) and fcc/hcp Co(111) on Fe(110) investigated by STM and STS

2009

Abstract We report on the growth of ultrathin epitaxial Co films on Fe(1 1 0) examined by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). At room temperature Co forms pseudomorphic, ideally ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) layers for the first two monolayers as confirmed by atomically resolved STM images. This is in contrast to the related case of Co/Cr(1 1 0) where a superstructure occurs in the second layer. The third monolayer forms a close-packed structure and causes a transformation of the buried second monolayer into a close-packed structure. The Fe(1 1 0) substrate strongly influences the electronic structure of the first Co monolayer as concluded from the dI / dU spec…

Hierachical Ni@Fe2O3superparticles through epitaxial growth of γ-Fe2O3nanorods on: In situ formed Ni nanoplates

2016

One endeavour of nanochemistry is the bottom-up synthesis of functional mesoscale structures from basic building blocks. We report a one-pot wet chemical synthesis of Ni@γ-Fe2O3 superparticles containing Ni cores densely covered with highly oriented γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite) nanorods (NRs) by controlled reduction/decomposition of nickel acetate (Ni(ac)2) and Fe(CO)5. Automated diffraction tomography (ADT) of the Ni-Fe2O3 interface in combination with Mossbauer spectroscopy showed that selective and oriented growth of the γ-Fe2O3 nanorods on the Ni core is facilitated through the formation of a Fe0.05Ni0.95 alloy and the appearance of superstructure features that may reduce strain at the Ni-Fe2O3 …

High-pressure Raman study of theN2stretching vibration in argon-nitrogen mixtures at room temperature

1996

We present room-temperature Raman investigations of the nitrogen molecule stretching vibration in ${\mathrm{Ar}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$(${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{\mathit{x}}$ from x=1 to x=0.59 in the pressure range 1\ensuremath{\le}p\ensuremath{\le}31 GPa. Ar substitution leads to an inhomogeneous broadening of the vibrational signal. The \ensuremath{\beta}-\ensuremath{\delta} phase transition of pure ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ is shifted to higher pressures for x=0.75. The substituted Ar atoms preferentially occupy the 2a sites of the cubic elementary cell of the orientationally disordered \ensuremath{\delta} phase. This interpretation of the experimental data is supported by our mod…

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of polyelectrolyte multilayer modified gold electrodes: influence of supporting electrolyte and temperature.

2005

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry are employed to characterize poly(styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) multilayers assembled onto cysteamine-modified gold surfaces. The influence of the supporting electrolyte and temperature on the impedance response is studied because of both its practical interest and the need to test further the capillary membrane model recently developed by Barreira et al. [J. Phys. Chem. B 2004, 108, 17973]. The results obtained are interpreted quite satisfactorily in terms of this model, thus providing additional support to its usefulness for the description of ionic transport through polyelectrolyte multilayers. It is observe…
