Synthesis of gold nanotubes with variable wall thicknesses

We report the synthesis of gold nanotubes with variable wall thicknesses that is accomplished by the deposition of sacrificial hydrophobic polymer cores followed by gold shells within an anodic aluminum oxide template. We demonstrate that by varying polymer core hydrophobicity, the resulting gold shell thickness can be varied. There are two requirements for gold shell formation: (1) the polymer core must be able to be electrodeposited into a tubular (as opposed to wire-like) structure, and (2) the polymer must be hydrophobic, such that it collapses upon exposure to an aqueous solution. Speciation of tin(II) in aqueous solution: thermodynamic and spectroscopic study of simple and mixed hydroxocarboxylate complexes

This contribution reports the results of potentiometric and Mossbauer investigations on the formation, stability, and structure of binary and ternary mono- and binuclear complexes of Sn2+ with three hydroxocarboxylic ligands (namely L = tartrate, malate, and citrate) and chloride at T = 298.15 K in different ionic media and ionic strengths (0.15 and 1.00 mol dm−3 in NaCl(aq) and 1.00 mol dm−3 in NaNO3(aq)). The stability constants of various simple Sn i H j L (2+−) and mixed Sn i H j L k Cl (2+−−) species obtained in the different experimental conditions are reported, and various speciation diagrams of the simple and mixed systems are shown in different conditions. Metachromatic behavior of methylorange in the presence of ionenes

The addition of different ionenes, polycations with defined structure and charge distances, to methylorange1 in very dilute solutions of water resulted in an observable shift of the absorption maxima from 464 nm to shorter wavelengths. The extent of this so-called metachromasy effect was found to be dependent on the nature of the hydrophobic unit of the polymer backbone. The comparison of UV/VIS spectra's of these solutions with the absorption of a film of a model substance — a dication with methylorange as counteranion — lead to the conclusion that ionenes undergo an exchange of the counteranions when added to a dilute solution of methylorange. Supramolecular assemblies of phenyl-pyridyl-triazolopyridine and β-cyclodextrin as sensor of divalent cations in aqueous solution

The chemosensor 3-phenyl-7-(pyrid-2-yl)-[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine (PhPTP) used in combination with two different cyclodextrins, enable its solubilization and stabilization in aqueous solution. The behavior of the inclusion complex, and its binding ability in both cyclodextrins were investigated by means of absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The best results were obtained for PhPTP-DMβCD assembly, and its orientation in the DMβCD nano cavity was obtained by 2D-NMR. This inclusion geometry was confirmed by docking studies. Abstract The interaction of oxydiacetate and citrate with the major components of seawater has been studied potentiometrically, at 25°C, in an artificial seawater (containing Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl− and SO42−) at different salinities (5–45‰). Apparent protonation constants were calculated, from potentiometric data, and estimated, using an appropriate complex formation model. Abstract The interaction between peracetylated-β-cyclodextrin and tert-butyl and adamantyl functionalized triphenylphosphine derivatives was studied in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) based solvent media by UV–vis spectroscopy. The equilibrium constant for a 1:1 complexation reaction was obtained from titration spectra both in pure carbon dioxide and in the presence of methanol as a cosolvent in the temperature range 308–323 K to estimate the internal energy and entropy of the inclusion equilibrium. Joint Aqueous Solutions of Dextran and Bovine Serum Albumin: Coexistence of Three Liquid Phases

The phase diagram of the system water/dextran (DEX)/BSA was measured as well as modeled. On the experimental side, cloud points were determined and the coexisting phases were analyzed. The theoretical calculations use an approach capable of describing solutions of chain polymers and of globular proteins with the same formalism. The required thermodynamic input comes from experiments concerning the binary subsystems, except for the polymer blend for which one interaction parameter had to be adjusted. Molecular complexes between glycolic acid and nitrogen were studied in a low-temperature argon matrix with FTIR spectroscopy, and supported by MP2 and BLYPD3 calculations. The calculations indicate 11 and 10 stable complex structures at the MP2 and BLYPD3 levels of theories, respectively. However, only one hydrogen-bonded complex structure involving the most stable SSC conformer of glycolic acid was found experimentally, where the nitrogen molecule is bound with the carboxylic OH group of the SSC conformer.
