Progettazione e realizzazione di un sistema Continuous Wave fNIRS basato su tecnologia SiPM

Optical techniques represent a suitable tool for in vivo and non-invasive diagnosis of human brain and tissues. Functional Near InfraRed Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is revealing as an emerging neuroimaging technology, since it is safe, relatively inexpensive and little cumbersome. fNIRS relies on the measurement of the oxygen concentration in the blood by means of light beams impinging on the tissues under test. Haemoglobin concentration variations (oxygenated/deoxygenated) can provide very important information on brain activity and allow to discriminate the main brain area involved during tests. Herein, we present the design and development of an innovative solution for a portable continuous wav…

Embedded-atom calculations of Auger and x-ray photoemission shifts for metallic elements

1982

Change in self-consistent-field energy density-functional calculations are reported for Auger and core-level binding-energy shifts in sp-bonded metals. The basic model, atom in jellium vacancy, gives good agreement with experiment, especially in the Auger case. The chemical and relaxation contributions to the shifts are discussed, and the extra-atomic response is analyzed in detail, both in position and energy space. The adequacy of the "excited-atom" approach to the energy shifts is discussed. Peer reviewed

Mapping a-priori defined plant associations using remotely sensed vegetation characteristics

2014

Abstract Incorporation of a priori defined plant associations into remote sensing products is a major challenge that has only recently been confronted by the remote sensing community. We present an approach to map the spatial distribution of such associations by using plant indicator values (IVs) for salinity, moisture and nutrients as an intermediate between spectral reflectance and association occurrences. For a 12 km 2 study site in the Netherlands, the relations between observed IVs at local vegetation plots and visible and near-infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) airborne reflectance data were modelled using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) (R 2 0.73, 0.64 and 0.76 for sali…

The Epigenetics of the Endocannabinoid System

2020

The endocannabinoid system (ES) is a cell-signalling system widely distributed in biological tissues that includes endogenous ligands, receptors, and biosynthetic and hydrolysing machineries. The impairment of the ES has been associated to several pathological conditions like behavioural, neurological, or metabolic disorders and infertility, suggesting that the modulation of this system may be critical for the maintenance of health status and disease treatment. Lifestyle and environmental factors can exert long-term effects on gene expression without any change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA, affecting health maintenance and influencing both disease load and resistance. This potentially …

The Role of the α Cell in the Pathogenesis of Diabetes: A World beyond the Mirror

2021

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic metabolic disorders, and insulin has been placed at the epicentre of its pathophysiological basis. However, the involvement of impaired alpha (α) cell function has been recognized as playing an essential role in several diseases, since hyperglucagonemia has been evidenced in both Type 1 and T2DM. This phenomenon has been attributed to intra-islet defects, like modifications in pancreatic α cell mass or dysfunction in glucagon’s secretion. Emerging evidence has shown that chronic hyperglycaemia provokes changes in the Langerhans’ islets cytoarchitecture, including α cell hyperplasia, pancreatic beta (β) cell dedifferentiati…

Investigations of methyl lactate in the presence of reverse micelles by vibrational spectroscopy and circular dichroism

2012

Abstract The FT-IR and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of ( S )- and -( R )-methyl lactate have been recorded for neat samples and at various concentrations in CCl 4 and DMSO solutions. These spectra are used to analyse the FT-IR and VCD spectra of methyl lactates in presence of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in CCl 4 , where the surfactant molecules are known to form reverse micelles. Some tendency of methyl lactate to interact with AOT micellar aggregates is observed, but not as well defined as previously observed for dimethyl tartrate in analogous circumstances. Besides, near infrared (NIR) absorption and VCD data have been obtained for most of the above system…
