Determination of the adiabatic compressibility of bovine serum albumen in concentrated solution by a new ultrasonic method

Abstract New data are presented for the adiabatic compressibility of bovine serum albumen (BSA) over the temperature range 2–85°C and at pH 5, 6, 7 and 8. The relative impact of intrinsic and hydration contributions to the observed compressibility for BSA is estimated and shown to agree very well with general values for globular protein and with previous results for BSA. The compressibility manifests a maximum value in the regions where BSA is most stable, exhibiting a parabolic dependence on temperature with lowest values where it is least stable. In this work, viscosities, densities, and speeds of sound of three binary mixtures containing the ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [emim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [bmim][NTf2], and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazo-lium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [hmim][NTf2], mixed with ethanol were measured at atmospheric pressure in the range of (278.15 to 338.15) K, covering the entire range of compositions. Acoustic detection of neutrinos in bedrock

We propose to utilize bedrock as a medium for acoustic detection of particle showers following interactions of ultra-high energy neutrinos. With the density of rock three-times larger and the speed of sound four-times larger compared to water, the amplitude of the generated bipolar pressure pulse in rock should be larger by an order of magnitude. Our preliminary simulations confirm that prediction. Higher density of rock also guarantees higher interaction rate for neutrinos. A noticeably longer attenuation length in rock reduces signal dissipation. The Pyh\"asalmi mine has a unique infrastructure and rock conditions to test this idea and, if successful, extend it to a full-size experiment.
Association between low-frequency ultrasound and hip fractures - comparison with DXA-based BMD

Background New methods for diagnosing osteoporosis and evaluating fracture risk are being developed. We aim to study the association between low-frequency (LF) axial transmission ultrasound and hip fracture risk in a population-based sample of older women. Methods The study population consisted of 490 community-dwelling women (78–82 years). Ultrasound velocity (VLF) at mid-tibia was measured in 2006 using a low-frequency scanning axial transmission device. Bone mineral density (BMD) at proximal femur measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as the reference method.
