Strange vesicles with a homogeneous content in spermatocytes and spermatids of a click beetle, Adelocera murina (Elateridae). A fine structure study
1996
Abstract The restructuring of primary spermatocytes of Adelocera murina, a click beetle, is described using electron microscopy of ultrathin sections. Emphasis is on spherical or rod-shaped cytoplasmic inclusions, invested by a unit membrane. The content of the inclusions is slightly more electron-dense than that of the surrounding cytoplasm and homogeneously textured in most cases. The inclusions are missing in spermatogonia but are abundant in prophase I through anaphase I spermatocytes. Their number declines in telophase I. Very similar elements are associated with the distal ends of the outgrowing flagella in metaphase I through telophase I spermatocytes and form the so-called flagellar…
Gene expression in mouse spermatogenesis during ontogenesis
2006
In this study, we evaluated the expression of genes probably involved in spermatogenesis in the mouse. We examined cytosolic chaperonin theta subunit (CCTtheta), Ngg1 interacting factor 3 like 1 binding protein 1 (NIF3L1 BP1) and apolipoprotein H (ApoH) expression during mouse onto-geny using RT-PCR. Testicular tissue was obtained from mice 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 20 and 40 (adult) days after birth. For each mouse, one testis was used for histological examination, whereas RNA was extracted from the controlateral testis for expression analysis. RT-PCR analysis showed that CCTtheta gene expression was low until day 10, but increased drastically afterwards. At this age, spermatocytes started …
Spermiogenesis in the vermetid gastropod Dendropoma petraeum (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia)
2002
The structure and maturation of the male gonad of the Mediterranean vermetid gastropod Dendropoma petraeum are described. Histological sections of the gonads were made throughout development and gonad activity was monitored at regular monthly intervals. During the autumn months the gonad is very small and is surrounded by a large quantity of connective tissue; it becomes more voluminous from December to August, with the highest growth peak in springtime. The stages of spermatogenesis were also observed and described.
Germline deletion of Cetn1 causes infertility in male mice
2013
Centrins are calmodulin-like Ca2+-binding proteins that can be found in all ciliated eukaryotic cells from yeast to mammals. Expressed in male germ cells and photoreceptors, centrin 1 (CETN1) resides in the photoreceptor transition zone and connecting cilium. To identify its function in mammals, we deleted Cetn1 by homologous recombination. Cetn1−/− mice were viable and showed no sign of retina degeneration suggesting that CETN1 is nonessential for photoreceptor ciliogenesis or structural maintenance. Phototransduction components localized normally to the Cetn1−/− photoreceptor outer segments, and loss of CETN1 had no effect on light-induced translocation of transducin to the inner segment.…
