DesignArt. Ibridazioni creative tra arte e oggetti d’uso
2016
The seaweeds Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum are significant contributors to coastal iodine emissions
2013
Based on the results of a pilot study in 2007, which found high mixing ratios of molecular iodine (I2) above the intertidal macroalgae (seaweed) beds at Mweenish Bay (Ireland), we extended the study to nine different locations in the vicinity of Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station on the west coast of Ireland during a field campaign in 2009. The mean values of I2 mixing ratio found above the macroalgae beds at nine different locations ranged from 104 to 393 ppt, implying a high source strength of I2. Such mixing ratios are sufficient to result in photochemically driven coastal new-particle formation events. Mixing ratios above the Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus beds increased …
Discharges of past flood events based on historical river profiles
2008
Abstract. This paper presents a case study on the estimation of peak discharges of extreme flood events during the 19th century of the Neckar River located in south-western Germany. It was carried out as part of the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) research project RIMAX (Risk Management of Extreme Flood Events). The discharge estimations were made for the 1824 and 1882 flood events, and are based on historical cross profiles. The 1-D model Hydrologic Engineering Centers River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) was applied with different roughness coefficients to determine these estimations. The results are compared (i) with contemporary historical calculations for the 1824 a…
Including vegetation dynamics in an atmospheric chemistry-enabled general circulation model: linking LPJ-GUESS (v4.0) with the EMAC modelling system …
2020
Central to the development of Earth system models (ESMs) has been the coupling of previously separate model types, such as ocean, atmospheric, and vegetation models, to address interactive feedbacks between the system components. A modelling framework which combines a detailed representation of these components, including vegetation and other land surface processes, enables the study of land–atmosphere feedbacks under global climate change. Here we present the initial steps of coupling LPJ-GUESS, a dynamic global vegetation model, to the atmospheric chemistry-enabled atmosphere–ocean general circulation model EMAC. The LPJ-GUESS framework is based on ecophysiological processes, such as phot…
Leukotriene B4-loaded microspheres: a new therapeutic strategy to modulate cell activation
2008
AbstractBackgroundLeukotriene B4(LTB4) is a potent inflammatory mediator that also stimulates the immune response. In addition, it promotes polymorphonuclear leukocyte phagocytosis, chemotaxis, chemokinesis and modulates cytokines release. Regarding chemical instability of the leukotriene molecule, in the present study we assessed the immunomodulatory activities conferred by LTB4released from microspheres (MS). A previous oil-in-water emulsion solvent extraction-evaporation method was chosen to prepare LTB4-loaded MS.ResultsIn the mice cremasteric microcirculation, intraescrotal injection of 0.1 ml of LTB4-loaded MS provoked significant increases in leukocyte rolling flux, adhesion and emig…
Metabarcoding Analysis of Fungal Diversity in the Phyllosphere and Carposphere of Olive (Olea europaea)
2015
The fungal diversity associated with leaves, flowers and fruits of olive (Olea europaea) was investigated in different phenological stages (May, June, October and December) using an implemented metabarcoding approach. It consisted of the 454 pyrosequencing of the fungal ITS2 region and the subsequent phylogenetic analysis of relevant genera along with validated reference sequences. Most sequences were identified up to the species level or were associated with a restricted number of related taxa enabling supported speculations regarding their biological role. Analyses revealed a rich fungal community with 195 different OTUs. Ascomycota was the dominating phyla representing 93.6% of the total…
New Insights into the complexation of lead(II) by 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(carbamoylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DOTAM): structural, thermodynami…
2007
The lead(II) coordination properties of the tetrapodal ligand DOTAM [1,4,7,10-tetrakis(carbamoylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraaza-cyclododecane] have been investigated both in the solid state and in solution in order to ascertain the stereoactivity of the lone pair and to rationalize the structural effects of a cyclen-based scaffold on the metal uptake kinetics. The crystal structure of the free base shows that the pendant acetamide groups are not equivalent: two are folded over the macrocycle and maintained by an intramolecular hydrogen bond involving an amide hydrogen atom and a neighboring tertiary amine of the cyclen ring, while the other two are extended and point away from the macrocyclic cav…
Medialna sfera publiczna według Jürgena Habermasa
2015
Opracowanie przedstawia nowo ukształtowaną medialną sferę publiczną, której najistotniejszymi elementami są m.in.: pseudo-publiczność, pseudo-prywatność, konsumpcjonizm, manipulacja, brak dyskursu publicznego, społeczna apatia, bierność, utrata zdolności pośredniczenia. Sfera publiczna, cechująca się wymienionymi przymiotami, stała się sprywatyzowaną przestrzenią, w której licz…
Modelling of rotations by using matrix solutions of nonlinear wave equations
2007
A family of matrix solutions of nonlinear wave equations is extended and its application to modelling is given. It is shown that a similarity transformation, induced by the matrix solution, is equivalent to the rotation. Matrix solutions are used for modelling helical motions and vortex rings, simultaneous rotations and particles collision, mapping contraction and pulsating spheres. Geometrical interpretation of the doubling of rotation angle in each step of sequential mapping contraction is given. First Published Online: 14 Oct 2010
The early plastisphere of biodegradable and non-biodegradable plastic films in marine environment
2019
Introduction Plastic items are the most common form of marine debris and plastic accumulation in marine ecosystems is a serious environmental issue. One possible solution to reduce the amount of synthetic polymers released in the environment is to substitute them with bio-based polymers. When released in marine environments, plastics are readily colonized by biofilm-forming microorganisms, the so called “plastisphere community”, which may include pathogenic, invasive and plastic-degrading species; the composition and influence of the plastisphere on the fate of plastic is largely unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the early biofilm formation and the structure and diversity of …
