Crystal structures and magnetic properties of two- and three-dimensional malonato-bridged manganese(ii) complexes

2003

Two new manganese(II) compounds of formula [Mn(mal)(H2O)(2,4′-bpy)]n (1) and [Mn2(mal)2(H2O)2(4,4′-bpy)]n (2) (2,4′-bpy = 2,4′-bipyridine, 4,4′-bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine and H2mal = malonic acid) have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their structures are made up of two- (1) and three-dimensional (2) arrangements of manganese atoms linked by carboxylate-malonate groups in the anti–syn bridging mode (1 and 2) and bis(monodentate) 4,4′-bpy (2). The 2,4′-bpy group in 1 acts as a monodentate ligand. Each manganese atom in 1 and 2 is six-coordinated with four carboxylate-oxygens in the equatorial plane and a nitrogen atom and a water molecule in the axial positio…

A two-dimensional oxamate- and oxalate-bridged Cu(II)Mn(II) motif: crystal structure and magnetic properties of (Bu4N)2[Mn2{Cu(opba)}2ox].

2013

A new compound of formula (Bu4N)2[Mn2{Cu(opba)}2ox] (1) [Bu4N(+) = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, H4opba = 1,2-phenylenebis(oxamic acid), and H2ox = oxalic acid] has been synthesized and magneto-structurally investigated. The reaction of manganese(II) acetate, [Cu(opba)](2-), and ox(2-) in dimethyl sulfoxide yielded single crystals of 1. The structure of 1 consists of heterobimetallic oxamato-bridged Cu(II)Mn(II) chains which are connected through bis-bidentate oxalate coordinated to the manganese(II) ions to afford anionic heterobimetallic layers of 6(3)-hcb net topology. The layers are interleaved by n-Bu4N(+) counterions. Each copper(II) ion in 1 is four-coordinate in a square planar envi…

Magnetic Nanoparticles as Many-Spin Systems

2005

We have demonstrated by different analytical and numerical methods the importance of accounting for the magnetization inhomogeneities in magnetic nanoparticles, especially in the presence of surface anisotropy. The latter makes the magnetization inhomogeneous even at T = 0 and in general modifies the relation between the intrinsic and induced magnetizations. It also changes the magnetization switching mechanism, since for strong surface anisotropy the particle’s spins switch cluster-wise. For weak surface anisotropy we have been able to calculate the spin canting in the particle analytically and to obtain a novel second-order contribution to the particle’s overall anisotropy. It remains to …

AbstractMaterials that demonstrate long-range magnetic order are synonymous with information storage and the electronics industry, with the phenomenon commonly associated with metals, metal alloys or metal oxides and sulfides. A lesser known family of magnetically ordered complexes are the monometallic compounds of highly anisotropic d-block transition metals; the ‘transformation’ from isolated zero-dimensional molecule to ordered, spin-canted, three-dimensional lattice being the result of through-space interactions arising from the combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization from metal to ligand which induces important intermolecular contacts. Here we report the effect…

A novel supramolecular assembly in an iron(III) compound exhibiting magnetic ordering at 70 K

2004

Ethyl-substituted ammonium cation allows the preparation of an unprecedented oxo- and oxalato-bridged supramolecular three-dimensional network. The compound exhibits magnetic ordering with Tc = 70 K due to a weak spin canting. Julve Olcina, Miguel, Miguel.Julve@uv.es ; Lloret Pastor, Francisco, Francisco.Lloret@uv.es

Expanding the 2, 2’-bipyrimidine bridged 1D homonuclear coordination polymers family: [MIIbpymCl2] (M=Fe, Co) magnetic and structural characterization

2013

One pot reaction of hydrated chloride salts of Fe(II) and Co(II) with stoichiometric amounts of 2, 2’-bipyrimidine (bpym) in a methanol/ acetonitrile mixture afforded the corresponding 1D homonuclear coordination polymers, [μ-(bpym)MCl2]n. Crystal structures of both complexes are isomorphous in the highly symmetric orthorhombic space group Fddd. The 1D coordination polymers are composed of almost orthogonal alternating bipyrimidine bridges linking the {MCl2} units. The magnetic behaviour of the Fe(II)compound can be well understood as a uniform S=2 chain with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between metal ion sites. In the case of the Co(II) ion, also an antiferromagnetic interaction …

A ferromagnetic methoxido-bridged Mn(III) dimer and a spin-canted metamagnetic μ(1,3)-azido-bridged chain.

2012

Two new Mn(III) complexes of formulas [MnL(1)(N(3))(OMe)](2) (1) and [MnL(2)(N(3))(2)](n) (2) have been synthesized by using two tridentate NNO-donor Schiff base ligands HL(1){(2-[(3-methylaminoethylimino)-methyl]-phenol)} and HL(2) {(2-[1-(2-dimethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol)}, respectively. Substitution of the H atom on the secondary amine group of the N-methyldiamine fragment of the Schiff base by a methyl group leads to a drastic structural change from a methoxido-bridged dimer (1) to a single μ(1,3)-azido-bridged 1D helical polymer (2). Both complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The ma…

Magnetic behavior control in niccolite structural metal formate frameworks [NH2(CH3)2][Fe(III)M(II)(HCOO)6] (M = Fe, Mn, and Co) by varying the dival…

2010

By changing template cation but introducing trivalent iron ions in the known niccolite structural metal formate frameworks, three complexes formulated [NH(2)(CH(3))(2)][Fe(III)M(II)(HCOO)(6)] (M = Fe for 1, Mn for 2, and Co for 3) were synthesized and magnetically characterized. The variation in the compositions of the complexes leads to three different complexes: mixed-valent complex 1, heterometallic but with the same spin state complex 2, and heterometallic heterospin complex 3. The magnetic behaviors are closely related to the divalent metal ions used. Complex 1 exhibits negative magnetization assigned as Neel N-Type ferrimagnet, with an asymmetric magnetization reversal in the hysteres…

Structural and magnetic characterization of the tridimensional network [Fe(HCO2)3]n·nHCO2H

2013

In this work we report the structural and magnetic characterization of a new three-dimensional porous metal–organic framework (MOF) based on iron(III) and the formate anion, [Fe(HCO2)3]n·nHCO2H (1), which was obtained by solvothermal synthesis. The tridimensional structure crystallizes in the trigonal space group Rc and is formed by highly regular octahedral Fe(OHCO)6 units. These units contain six equal Fe–O distances, with angles slightly different from 90° or 180°. The packing of 1 corresponds to a 3D covalent network defined by face sharing between the parallelepipeds, which are formed by the interactions of Fe(OHCO)6 units through formate ligands, thus generating a 41263 topology. This…
