Magnetic Ordering and Spin Dynamics of Ba1-xEuxSi Phases
2011
We have investigated the magnetic ordering and spin dynamics of the solid solution series Ba1–xEuxSi with 0 < x ≤ 1 applying X-ray diffraction, electric conductivity measurements, Mossbauer spectroscopy, muon spin depolarization, and neutron diffraction. Our results suggest a spin glass-like behavior of Ba1–xEuxSi for concentrations close to x = 0.3 exist. Different spin ordering phenomena are found, which are dependent on the relative europium concentrations.
Spin relaxation in Cu and Al spin conduits
2014
We study the spin relaxation in Al and Cu spin conduits embedded in non-local spin valve nanostructures. Measuring the key spin transport properties, we determine the spin and charge diffusion constants as well as the spin flip time. By varying the temperature, we find that the maximum of the non-local spin resistance change occurs at finite temperatures with a clear difference between Al and Cu. In particular, we find that the maximum of the non-local spin signal in Al is less pronounced and occurs at lower temperatures compared to Cu suggesting that the self-passivating Al surface plays a role. Having fabricated devices with both materials in identical processes, we can attribute the diff…
Spin forbidden chemical reactions of transition metal compounds. New ideas and new computational challenges.
2003
International audience; Many reactions of transition metal compounds involve a change in spin. These reactions may proceed faster, slower—or at the same rate as—otherwise equivalent processes in which spin is conserved. For example, ligand substitution in [CpMo(Cl)2(PR3)2] is faster than expected, whereas addition of dinitrogen to [Cp*Mo(Cl)(PMe3)2] is slow. Spin-forbidden oxidative addition of ethylene to [Cp*Ir(PMe3)] occurs competitively with ligand association. To explain these observations, we discuss the shape of the different potential energy surfaces (PESs) involved, and the energy of the minimum energy crossing points (MECPs) between them. This computational approach is of great he…
Determining Key Local Vibrations in the Relaxation of Molecular Spin Qubits and Single-Molecule Magnets.
2017
To design molecular spin qubits and nanomagnets operating at high temperatures, there is an urgent need to understand the relationship between vibrations and spin relaxation processes. Herein we develop a simple first-principles methodology to determine the modulation that vibrations exert on spin energy levels. This methodology is applied to [Cu(mnt)2]2– (mnt2– = 1,2-dicyanoethylene-1,2-dithiolate), a highly coherent complex. By theoretically identifying the most relevant vibrational modes, we are able to offer general strategies to chemically design more resilient magnetic molecules, where the energy of the spin states is not coupled to vibrations.
Binding Sites, Vibrations and Spin-Lattice Relaxation Times in Europium(II)-Based Metallofullerene Spin Qubits.
2021
Abstract To design molecular spin qubits with enhanced quantum coherence, a control of the coupling between the local vibrations and the spin states is crucial, which could be realized in principle by engineering molecular structures via coordination chemistry. To this end, understanding the underlying structural factors that govern the spin relaxation is a central topic. Here, we report the investigation of the spin dynamics in a series of chemically designed europium(II)‐based endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs). By introducing a unique structural difference, i. e. metal‐cage binding site, while keeping other molecular parameters constant between different complexes, these manifest the ke…
Spin-crossover nanoparticles anchored on MoS2 layers for heterostructures with tunable strain driven by thermal or light-induced spin switching
2021
In the past few years, the effect of strain on the optical and electronic properties of MoS2 layers has attracted particular attention as it can improve the performance of optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Although several approaches have been explored, strain is typically externally applied on the two-dimensional material. In this work, we describe the preparation of a reversible ‘self-strainable’ system in which the strain is generated at the molecular level by one component of a MoS2-based composite material. Spin-crossover nanoparticles were covalently grafted onto functionalized layers of semiconducting MoS2 to form a hybrid heterostructure. Their ability to switch between two spi…
Experimental Realization of a Dirac Monopole through the Decay of an Isolated Monopole
2017
We experimentally observe the decay dynamics of deterministically created isolated monopoles in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. As the condensate undergoes a change between magnetic phases, the isolated monopole gradually evolves into a spin configuration hosting a Dirac monopole in its synthetic magnetic field. We characterize in detail the Dirac monopole by measuring the particle densities of the spin states projected along different quantization axes. Importantly, we observe the spontaneous emergence of nodal lines in the condensate density that accompany the Dirac monopole. We also demonstrate that the monopole decay accelerates in weaker magnetic field gradients.
Small clusters with anisotropic antiferromagnetic exchange in a magnetic field
2004
We consider small symmetric clusters of magnetic atoms (spins) with anisotropic exchange interaction between the atoms in a magnetic field at zero temperature. The inclusion of the anisotropy leads to a wealth of different phases as a function of the applied magnetic field. These are not phases in the thermodynamic sense with critical properties but rather physical structures with different arrangements of the spins and hence different symmetries. We study the spatial symmetry of these phases, for the classical and quantum cases. Results are presented mainly for three frustrated systems, the triangle, the tetrahedron and the five-atom ring, which have many interesting features. In the class…
Theoretical design of magnetic wires from acene and nanocorone derivatives
2016
Theoretical calculations on a series of molecular models based on amino derivatives of linear and cycled acenes acting as organic linkers between two copper(ii) ions have shown a wire-like magnetic behaviour, so that the intermetallic magnetic communication does not vanish when the linker becomes larger due to its polyradical nature. Hence, these models can be considered as molecular magnetic wires, which can be used as active components for molecular spintronics, where the information transport is based on spin carriers instead of the more conventional charge transport. The nature of the spin ground state along these two series of models is governed by the topology of the organic linker, i…
Thermal conductance of thin film YIG determined using Bayesian statistics
2015
Thin film YIG (${\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$) is a prototypical material for experiments on thermally generated pure spin currents and the spin Seebeck effect. The $3\ensuremath{\omega}$ method is an established technique to measure the cross-plane thermal conductance of thin films, but cannot be used in YIG/GGG (${\mathrm{Ga}}_{3}{\mathrm{Gd}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$) systems in its standard form. We use two-dimensional modeling of heat transport and introduce a technique based on Bayesian statistics to evaluate measurement data taken from the $3\ensuremath{\omega}$ method. Our analysis method allows us to study material systems that have not been accessible with the c…
