In this article, we apply narrative dialogism and new materialism to health research. We examine how material↔semiotic environments (MSEs) affect the rehabilitation process of Patrick, a man who exercised with the aim to recover from spinal cord injury. The MSEs are considered embedded subcases within the overall holistic case of Patrick. Three MSEs were identified: the hospital gym, the personal gym, and the adapted gym. In vivo microdialysis was used to estimate the extracellular concentrations of ceftazidime and ceftriaxone, two expanded-spectrum cephalosporins commonly used in the treatment of bacterial meningitis, in two brain regions (the right corpus striatum and the left lateral ventricle) of awake, freely moving rats. Antibiotics were administered by constant intravenous infusion at 18 mg/h until steady-state levels were reached. Background Surgery for symptomatic sacral perineural cysts remains an issue of discussion. Assuming micro-communications between the cyst and thecal sac resulting in a valve mechanism and trapping of CSF as a pathomechanism, microsurgical fenestration from the cyst to the thecal sac was performed to achieve free CSF communication. Methods In 13 consecutive patients (10 female, 3 male), MRI revealed sacral perineural cysts and excluded other pathologies. We quantitated interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) and soluble form of the IL-6 signal-transducing protein gp130 (sgp130) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) (n = 17) and control subjects (n = 18) using sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Our results show that none of the parameters examined was significantly different in CSF of AD patients as compared to control age-matched non-demented patients. We conclude that CSF levels of IL-6 and their soluble receptors do not necessarily reflect local changes of the IL-6 system that has been shown to be involved in neurodegenerative events occurring in AD. Methods The study was performed in a cohort consisting of patients with AD and those without AD, including individuals with other neurological diseases.
