Pressure-induced structural and semiconductor-semiconductor transitions in Co0.5Mg0.5Cr2O4

2018

The effect of pressure on the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of Mg-doped Cr bearing spinel $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{o}}_{0.5}\mathrm{M}{\mathrm{g}}_{0.5}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ was studied up to 55 GPa at room-temperature using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electrical transport measurements, and ab initio calculations. We found that the ambient-pressure phase is cubic (spinel-type, $Fd\overline{3}m$) and underwent a pressure-induced structural transition to a tetragonal phase (space group $I\overline{4}m2$) above 28 GPa. The ab initio calculation confirmed this first-order phase transition. The resistivity of the sample decreased at low pressures …

Pressure-induced order–disorder transitions in β-In2S3: an experimental and theoretical study of structural and vibrational properties

2021

This joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural and vibrational properties of β-In2S3 upon compression shows that this tetragonal defect spinel undergoes two reversible pressure-induced order-disorder transitions up to 20 GPa. We propose that the first high-pressure phase above 5.0 GPa has the cubic defect spinel structure of α-In2S3 and the second high-pressure phase (ϕ-In2S3) above 10.5 GPa has a defect α-NaFeO2-type (R3m) structure. This phase, related to the NaCl structure, has not been previously observed in spinels under compression and is related to both the tetradymite structure of topological insulators and to the defect LiTiO2 phase observed at high pressure in oth…

Lattice dynamics of ZnAl2O4 and ZnGa2O4 under high pressure

2010

In this work we present a ¿rst-principles density functional study of the vibrational properties of ZnAl2 O4 and ZnGa2 O4 as function of hydrostatic pressure. Based on our previous structural characterization of these two compounds under pressure, herewith, we report the pressure dependence on both systems of the vibrational modes for the cubic spinel structure, for the CaFe2 O4-type structure (Pnma) in ZnAl2 O4 and for marokite (Pbcm) ZnGa2 O4. Additionally we report a second order phase transition in ZnGa2 O4 from the marokite towards the CaTi2 O4-type structure (Cmcm), for which we also calculate the pressure dependence of the vibrational modes at the ¿ point. Our calculations are comple…

Phonon properties of the spinel oxideMgTi2O4with theS=1/2pyrochlore lattice

2003

We study the phonon dynamics of ${\mathrm{MgTi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ spinel by measuring the Raman and infrared reflectivity spectra in a wide frequency $(100--3000{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ and temperature (10 K--300 K) range. The reflectivity spectra are analyzed by a fitting procedure based on a model which includes both Drude and phonon oscillator contributions to the dielectric constant. The phonon assignment is done from comparison between experimental data and shell model lattice dynamical calculations. We find two infrared-active ${F}_{1u}$ symmetry modes superimposed on the free carrier continuum, and four Raman-active modes of ${1A}_{1g},$ ${1E}_{g},$ and ${2F}_{2g}$ symme…

First-principles electronic structure of spinelLiCr2O4:A possible half-metal

2004

We have employed first-principles electronic structure calculations to examine the hypothetical (but plausible) oxide spinel, ${\mathrm{LiCr}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ with the ${d}^{2.5}$ electronic configuration. The cell (cubic) and internal (oxygen position) structural parameters have been obtained for this compound through structural relaxation in the first-principles framework. Within the one-electron band picture, we find that ${\mathrm{LiCr}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ is magnetic, and a candidate half-metal. The electronic structure is substantially different from the closely related and well-known rutile half-metal ${\mathrm{CrO}}_{2}.$ In particular, we find a smaller conduction-band width…

Modic changes-Their associations with low back pain and activity limitation: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

2018

Background Previous systematic reviews have reported positive associations between Modic changes (MCs) and low back pain (LBP), but due to their narrow scope and new primary studies, there is a need for a comprehensive systematic review. Our objectives were to investigate if MCs are associated with non-specific LBP and/or activity limitation and if such associations are modified by other factors. Methods A protocol for this review was registered at PROSPERO prior to commencing the work (PROSPERO record: CRD42015017350). The MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMBASE databases were searched for relevant studies from first record to June 15th 2016. Prospective or retrospective cross-sectional cohort studies …

Stabilization of polar solid oxide surfaces: competition between adsorption and reconstruction

2002

Multi-cationic spinel compounds are solids that exhibit polar faces. X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the main phenomena allowing the stabilization of these faces, carried out as a function of the material treatment, particularly the cooling rate after thermal treatment at a high temperature (1200°C). This study showed that, whatever the cooling rate, each sample is subject to a significant hydroxylation that reduces the polarity. Nevertheless, it appears that the hydroxyl group content at the surface is a strong function of the cooling rate. Indeed, whereas quenched materials are subject to high levels of hydroxylation, slowly cooled samples are sparingly hydroxylated. This phenom…

An organelle-specific protein landscape identifies novel diseases and molecular mechanisms.

2016

Cellular organelles provide opportunities to relate biological mechanisms to disease. Here we use affinity proteomics, genetics and cell biology to interrogate cilia: poorly understood organelles, where defects cause genetic diseases. Two hundred and seventeen tagged human ciliary proteins create a final landscape of 1,319 proteins, 4,905 interactions and 52 complexes. Reverse tagging, repetition of purifications and statistical analyses, produce a high-resolution network that reveals organelle-specific interactions and complexes not apparent in larger studies, and links vesicle transport, the cytoskeleton, signalling and ubiquitination to ciliary signalling and proteostasis. We observe sub…

Amyloid Beta-Mediated Changes in Synaptic Function and Spine Number of Neocortical Neurons Depend on NMDA Receptors

2021

Onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathophysiology differs between brain regions. The neocortex, for example, is a brain region that is affected very early during AD. NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are involved in mediating amyloid beta (Aβ) toxicity. NMDAR expression, on the other hand, can be affected by Aβ. We tested whether the high vulnerability of neocortical neurons for Aβ-toxicity may result from specific NMDAR expression profiles or from a particular regulation of NMDAR expression by Aβ. Electrophysiological analyses suggested that pyramidal cells of 6-months-old wildtype mice express mostly GluN1/GluN2A NMDARs. While synaptic NMDAR-mediated currents are unaltered in 5xFAD …

Randomized controlled trial of postoperative exercise rehabilitation program after lumbar spine fusion: study protocol

2012

Abstract Background Lumbar spine fusion (LSF) effectively decreases pain and disability in specific spinal disorders; however, the disability rate following surgery remains high. This, combined with the fact that in Western countries the number of LSF surgeries is increasing rapidly it is important to develop rehabilitation interventions that improve outcomes. Methods/design In the present RCT-study we aim to assess the effectiveness of a combined back-specific and aerobic exercise intervention for patients after LSF surgery. One hundred patients will be randomly allocated to a 12-month exercise intervention arm or a usual care arm. The exercise intervention will start three months after su…
