Machaeracanthus goujetin. sp. (Acanthodii) from the Lower Devonian of Spain and northwest France, with special reference to spine histology

2012

ABSTRACT We describe here a new machaeracanthid acanthodian (Machaeracanthus goujeti n. sp.), based on isolated spines, scales and scapulocoracoids from the Lower Devonian (Lochkovian-Pragian) of the Nogueras Formation, Celtiberia, Spain. The new taxon also includes a fragmentary spine and isolated scales from the Lower Devonian of northern Spain (Palencia and Cantabrian Mountains) and western France (Saint-Cenere) originally assigned to Machaeracanthus sp. The spines of M. goujeti n. sp. comprise two morphotypes in agreement with the morphofunctional model of a pair of pectoral spines articulating with the pectoral girdle already indicated for M. hunsrueckianum Sudkamp & Burrow, 2007, M. l…

Influence of complex physiotherapy on the functional condition of the spine in older people

2018

The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of 21-days comprehensive physiotherapy program on the functional condition of the spine and severity of pain in older people. To achieve this goal, physiotherapeutic procedures were performed on 100 elderly patients suffering from spinal disorders. The comprehensive therapy program consisted of: general improvement exercises, individual exercises with a physiotherapist, exercises in water and physical therapy treatments such as: TENS currents, galvanic current, iontophoresis, laser stimulation, magnetic field on the lumbar spine and hydro massage or mud compresses. Prior and post the therapy program: the Schober’s test - 1 (forward flexi…

MRI evaluation of spine abnormalities in the supine position and under physiological load in athletes with a dedicated MR scanner

2013

Purpose of our study was to evaluate the behavior of the lumbar spine of young athletes in the supine and standing position, taking into account all postural changes that the spine undergoes during physiological load, any alterations and any discrepancies in the detection of pathology between the two positions. Between August 2008 and October 2009, we evaluated 40 sportsman (20 men and 20 women) with symptoms of lumbar pain. All subjects underwent MRI with a dedicated scanner of 0.25 Tesla (G-Scan, Esaote Biomedica, Genoa, Italy) either in the conventional supine position, either in the weight-bearing position. Spin echo T1w and fast spin echo T2w images were acquired with a dedicated recei…

Defects induced by He+ irradiation in γ-Si3N4

2021

International audience; Formation and evolution of defect levels in the electronic structure of silicon nitride with cubic spinel structure, -Si 3 N 4 , after the irradiation with He + ions was investigated using spectroscopic techniques. Strong changes of cathodoluminescence (CL), photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and Raman spectra were detected. In particular, excitonic PL was significantly inhibited and a new near-IR band appeared with the band gap excitation h≥E g =5.05 eV. This was explained by an effective trapping of photoinduced electrons and holes by charged defects. The spectral shift of PL with the excitation photon energy indicated heterogeneous nature…

Garnet and spinel lherzolite assemblages in MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 and CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2: thermodynamic models and an experimental conflict

2012

The recent publication of an updated thermodynamic dataset for petrological calculations provides an opportunity to illustrate the relationship between experimental data and the dataset, in the context of a new set of activity–composition models for several key minerals. These models represent orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and garnet in the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (CMAS), and are valid up to 50 kbar and at least 1800 °C; they are the first high-temperature models for these phases to be developed for the Holland & Powell dataset. The models are calibrated with reference to phase-relation data in the subsystems CaO–MgO–SiO2 (CMS) and MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (MAS), and will themselves form the basis o…

Fine–grained spinel ferrites: From the reactivity to magnetic properties

1998

The oxidation at low temperature of fine-grained ferrites containing oxidizable cations such as Cu + , Fe 2+ , Mn 2+ , Mo 3+ , V 3+ , has led to new mixed-valent cation deficient ferrites with a large number of vacancies. It has been demonstrated by DTG analysis that each cation oxidizes at a specific temperature in close relation with the cation-oxygen distance. The kinetics oxidation of each oxidizable cation has been explained on the basis of a diffusion-induced stress effect when these stresses are generated by the chemical gradient induced during the oxidation process. When fine-grained ferrites contain some Co-cations, it has been revealed that the stresses have a significant influenc…

Classification and Automated Interpretation of Spinal Posture Data Using a Pathology-Independent Classifier and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (…

2021

Clinical classification models are mostly pathology-dependent and, thus, are only able to detect pathologies they have been trained for. Research is needed regarding pathology-independent classifiers and their interpretation. Hence, our aim is to develop a pathology-independent classifier that provides prediction probabilities and explanations of the classification decisions. Spinal posture data of healthy subjects and various pathologies (back pain, spinal fusion, osteoarthritis), as well as synthetic data, were used for modeling. A one-class support vector machine was used as a pathology-independent classifier. The outputs were transformed into a probability distribution according to Plat…

Determination of the object surface function by structured light: application to the study of spinal deformities.

1999

The projection of structured light is a technique frequently used to determine the surface shape of an object. In this paper, a new procedure is described that efficiently resolves the correspondence between the knots of the projected grid and those obtained on the object when the projection is made. The method is based on the use of three images of the projected grid. In two of them the grid is projected over a flat surface placed, respectively, before and behind the object; both images are used for calibration. In the third image the grid is projected over the object. It is not reliant on accurate determination of the camera and projector pair relative to the grid and object. Once the met…

Thoracic dumbbell spinal metastasis secondary to neuroendocrine tumor of unknown origin: Case report and literature review

2022

Background: Dumbbell tumors are typically benign schwannomas, neurofibromas, and meningiomas and only rarely there are malignant variants of these lesions or other malignant histotypes. Here, a 34-year-old male presented with a thoracic spinal dumbbell metastatic neuroendocrine carcinoma of unknown primary origin. Case Description: A 34-year-old male presented with 2 months of thoracic pain and progressive mid thoracic sensory loss. A post contrast thoracic MRI showed a dumbbell tumor localized between the T7 and T9 levels with extension laterally into the T7-T8 and T8-T9 foramina. The patient underwent a laminectomy for tumor resection following which his pain and gait improved. Histopath…
