Clinical and radiological features of Forestier's disease presenting with dysphagia

2018

Background Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), also known as Forestier's disease, is a rheumatologic condition characterized by ossification of the spinal ligaments and tendons. Large anterior osteophytes are typically present in the lower cervical levels, while upper cervical ossification resulting in dysphagia is very rare. Methods Here, we presented a patient with Forestier's disease involving massive ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament extending from C3 to C4 downward contributing to severe dysphagia. Results A 65-year-old male presented with cervical pain and dysphagia. The computed tomography of the cervical spine demonstrated massive anterior longitudinal …

Spatiotemporal and gender-specific parasitism in two species of gobiid fish

2018

Parasitism is considered a major selective force in natural host populations. Infections can decrease host condition and vigour, and potentially influence, for example, host population dynamics and behavior such as mate choice. We studied parasite infections of two common marine fish species, the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) and the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps), in the brackish water Northern Baltic Sea. We were particularly interested in the occurrence of parasite taxa located in central sensory organs, such as eyes, potentially affecting fish behavior and mate choice. We found that both fish species harbored parasite communities dominated by taxa transmitted to fish through …

Divergent Macroparasite Infections in Parapatric Swiss Lake-Stream Pairs of Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

2015

Spatial heterogeneity in diversity and intensity of parasitism is a typical feature of most hostparasite interactions, but understanding of the evolutionary implications of such variation is limited. One possible outcome of infection heterogeneities is parasite-mediated divergent selection between host populations, ecotypes or species which may facilitate the process of ecological speciation. However, very few studies have described infections in populationpairs along the speciation continuum from low to moderate or high degree of genetic differentiation that would address the possibility of parasite-mediated divergent selection in the early stages of the speciation process. Here we provide…

Synthesis and host properties of tetragonal Li2Mn2O4 and Li2Co0.4Mn1.6O4

2000

Abstract This paper presents synthesis and electrochemical properties of tetragonal lithium manganese dioxide, Li2Mn2O4 and its cobalt doped analogue Li2Co0.4Mn1.6O4. The materials are compared as host materials for lithium insertion and the behavior during the initial lithium extraction as well as on repeated cycling is presented. These materials show an initial lithium extraction capacity between 200 and 270 mAh/g. On repeated cycling, they are converted into spinel-like lattices with reversible capacities in the range 82–90 mAh/g. As they are chemically compatible with the manganese spinel, they will be well suited as additives compensating for the capacity loss during the initial formin…

Suport System for the Management of the Sabanejewia aurata (De Filippi, 1863) Populations of the ROSCI0227 – Sighișoara-Târnava Mare

2016

Abstract ADONIS:CE was used to design a computer model for the management of Sabanejewia aurata (De Filippi, 1863) populations in the Natura 2000 site of Sighişoara-Târnava Mare (ROSCI0227). The recommended management model is based on the environmental needs of the species, inventoried according to the local habitats, as well as the indicators of conservation status and relevant management measures, and takes into account human pressures and threats identified in the research area. Such computer models were established for all protected fish species found at the site ROSCI0227.

Magnetic Properties Experiments on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit at Gusev Crater

2004

The magnetic properties experiments are designed to help identify the magnetic minerals in the dust and rocks on Mars—and to determine whether liquid water was involved in the formation and alteration of these magnetic minerals. Almost all of the dust particles suspended in the martian atmosphere must contain ferrimagnetic minerals (such as maghemite or magnetite) in an amount of ∼2% by weight. The most magnetic fraction of the dust appears darker than the average dust. Magnetite was detected in the first two rocks ground by Spirit.

Ni-containing spinel aluminates glass-ceramic materials obtained from cordieritic bulk glasses

2003

Monolithic glasses with compositions 2MO 2Al2O3 5SiO2, being M ¼ Ni and equimolar mixtures of Ni and Mg, were prepared at 1650 C by melting mixtures of raw materials. The crystallization of monoliths was produced by heattreatment at several temperatures up to 1200 C. The crystallization sequence was followed by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies. Surprisingly, the only crystalline phase formed after heating up to 1100 C was a nickel-containing aluminate spinel for both compositions. The microstructural characterization indicated t…

Effect of some additives on the development of spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes for floor-tiles

2005

Abstract The feasibility of developing spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes from a glass with composition in the system ZnO–MgO–B 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 was examined. To do it additional fluxes and/or nucleants were added to a parent glass before melting. Pressed pellets of powdered glasses were submitted to standard thermal treatments up to 1200 °C. The crystallization path and the microstructural development at several temperatures were followed by several experimental techniques. The results showed that additions of TiO 2 as nucleant or additional B 2 O 3 as flux to the chosen glass favored the crystallization of cordierite or mullite as main crystalline phase. Glasses which also contained …
