Magnetic Properties Experiments on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit at Gusev Crater

2004

The magnetic properties experiments are designed to help identify the magnetic minerals in the dust and rocks on Mars—and to determine whether liquid water was involved in the formation and alteration of these magnetic minerals. Almost all of the dust particles suspended in the martian atmosphere must contain ferrimagnetic minerals (such as maghemite or magnetite) in an amount of ∼2% by weight. The most magnetic fraction of the dust appears darker than the average dust. Magnetite was detected in the first two rocks ground by Spirit.

Ni-containing spinel aluminates glass-ceramic materials obtained from cordieritic bulk glasses

2003

Monolithic glasses with compositions 2MO 2Al2O3 5SiO2, being M ¼ Ni and equimolar mixtures of Ni and Mg, were prepared at 1650 C by melting mixtures of raw materials. The crystallization of monoliths was produced by heattreatment at several temperatures up to 1200 C. The crystallization sequence was followed by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies. Surprisingly, the only crystalline phase formed after heating up to 1100 C was a nickel-containing aluminate spinel for both compositions. The microstructural characterization indicated t…

Effect of some additives on the development of spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes for floor-tiles

2005

Abstract The feasibility of developing spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes from a glass with composition in the system ZnO–MgO–B 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 was examined. To do it additional fluxes and/or nucleants were added to a parent glass before melting. Pressed pellets of powdered glasses were submitted to standard thermal treatments up to 1200 °C. The crystallization path and the microstructural development at several temperatures were followed by several experimental techniques. The results showed that additions of TiO 2 as nucleant or additional B 2 O 3 as flux to the chosen glass favored the crystallization of cordierite or mullite as main crystalline phase. Glasses which also contained …

Zn,Al hydrotalcites calcined at different temperatures: Preparation, characterization and photocatalytic activity in gas–solid regime

2011

Abstract Layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing zinc and aluminium within the brucite-like layers and carbonate as the interlayer anion have been used as precursors for the preparation of mixed metal oxides by calcination. Zinc oxide and the ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel were formed with different degree of crystallinity depending of two parameters, i.e., the Zn 2+ /Al 3+ molar ratio and the calcination temperature (500–800 °C) of the LDH precursor. A pure spinel phase was obtained to remove ZnO upon a basic post-treatment in NaOH solution of the samples calcined at 800 °C. All the samples were tested for the photodegradation of 2-propanol in gas–solid regime. All the samples resulted active as het…

Raman and infrared spectromicroscopy of manganese oxides

2009

Abstract Confocal micro-Raman and micro-FT-IR spectroscopies have been used to probe the phase composition of nominally pure single-crystal MnO and mixed MnO–Mn 3 O 4 samples, grown by the method of chemical transport reactions on MgO(1 0 0) substrate. The presence of spinel Mn 3 O 4 phase has been clearly detected in both samples by Raman and FT-IR spectroscopies. The size of the spinel Mn 3 O 4 phase regions has been estimated to be below 20 μm.

Ordering kinetics in synthetic Mg(Al,Fe3+)2O4 spinels: Quantitative elucidation of the whole Al-Mg-Fe partitioning, rate constants, activation energi…

2014

A novel procedure, based on the application of the kinetics simulator Gepasi, has been successfully applied for modeling the cation ordering process in two synthetic Mg(Al2-yFe3+y)O4 spinels (y~ 0.39 and 0.54, samples F39 and F54, respectively). The kinetic profiles suggested a two-stage mechanism, with rapid inter-site exchange of Fe3+ with Mg followed by slow exchange of Al with Mg. The trial to apply the classical approaches, based on the explicit solutions of the differential equations corresponding to single-cation (Sha-Chappel model) or two-cation (Müller model) exchange reactions, proved not feasible in the whole time range, thus implying a lack of information about the exchange proc…

Fast-neutron-induced and as-grown structural defects in magnesium aluminate spinel crystals with different stoichiometry

2019

Abstract Several hole-type paramagnetic defects (a hole localized at a regular oxygen ion near charged structural defect/defects) have been revealed in fast-neutron-irradiated MgO⋅2.5Al2O3 single crystals using the EPR method. Three of them (a dominant V1 and small amount of V2 and V22) were recently revealed in a neutron-irradiated stoichiometric MgAl2O4, while a novel V4 center, ascribed to a hole in a form of O− ion nearby a complex of a magnesium vacancy and a positively charged antisite defect (V4 ≡ O–‑VMg‑Al|Mg), was created by fast neutrons only in a nonstoichiometric single crystal. The pulse annealing of the EPR signal of these centers was compared to that of radiation induced opti…

Properties of Ni–Zn ferrite thin films deposited using spray pyrolysis

2012

Abstract Nanocrystalline, homogeneous spinel Ni 1 − x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 thin films were deposited on glass substrates by using spray pyrolysis of metal nitrate aqueous solutions. The thickness of deposited films was below 500 nm, but crystallite size was under 30 nm. It has been shown that the DC resistivity, dielectric loss and optical band gap of deposited films are influenced by the zinc content. High DC resistivity and low dielectric losses of thin Ni 1 − x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 films are explained by mixed n-p conductivity and nanograin structure of spray pyrolysis deposited coatings which are changing with the ratio of Ni/Zn.
