Spin state of a single-molecule magnet (SMM) creating long-range ordering on ferromagnetic layers of a magnetic tunnel junction – a Monte Carlo study

2021

Paramagnetic single-molecule magnets (SMMs) interacting with the ferromagnetic electrodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) produce a new system. The properties and future scope of new systems differ dramatically from the properties of isolated molecules and ferromagnets. However, it is unknown how far deep in the ferromagnetic electrode the impact of the paramagnetic molecule and ferromagnet interactions can travel for various levels of molecular spin states. Our prior experimental studies showed two types of paramagnetic SMMs, the hexanuclear Mn6 and octanuclear Fe–Ni molecular complexes, covalently bonded to ferromagnets produced unprecedented strong antiferromagnetic coupling between …

Spinterface: Crafting spintronics at the molecular scale

2014

A number of studies have suggested that molecular materials could offer similar performance as, or even potentially supersede, those of inorganic materials in spintronics devices. Radically new spintronics functionalities, unavailable with conventional inorganic materials, could stem from the interface between ferromagnetic (FM) and molecular materials, giving rise to the so-called “spinterface” field. In this article, we review the fundamental concepts, recent experiments, and perspectives in this fast rising field, where the functionality is brought from the bulk to the ultimate downscaled device: the interface. The article shows how spin-dependent hybridization at the FM metal/molecule i…

Probing magnetism in 2D van der Waals crystalline insulators via electron tunneling

2018

Magnetic insulators are a key resource for next-generation spintronic and topological devices. The family of layered metal halides promises varied magnetic states, including ultrathin insulating multiferroics, spin liquids, and ferromagnets, but device-oriented characterization methods are needed to unlock their potential. Here, we report tunneling through the layered magnetic insulator CrI₃ as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. We electrically detect the magnetic ground state and interlayer coupling and observe a fieldinducedmetamagnetic transition. The metamagnetic transition results in magnetoresistances of 95, 300, and 550% for bilayer, trilayer, and tetralayer CrI₃ bar…

Enhanced Magneto-optic Kerr Effect and Magnetic Properties ofCeY2Fe5O12Epitaxial Thin Films

2015

Integrated magneto-optical components require magnetic thin films for tuning of their parameters, and for many applications yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is the material of choice. The authors study high-quality cerium-substituted YIG thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition, which possess tunable magnetic anisotropy and a greatly enhanced magneto-optic Kerr effect, compared to conventional films. This discovery presents new opportunities for engineering tomorrow's magneto-optical and spintronic logic devices.

Self-Assembled Monolayer-Functionalized Half-Metallic Manganite for Molecular Spintronics

2012

(La,Sr)MnO(3) manganite (LSMO) has emerged as the standard ferromagnetic electrode in organic spintronic devices due to its highly spin-polarized character and air stability. Whereas organic semiconductors and polymers have been mainly envisaged to propagate spin information, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been overlooked and should be considered as promising materials for molecular engineering of spintronic devices. Surprisingly, up to now the first key step of SAM grafting protocols over LSMO surface thin films is still missing. We report the grafting of dodecyl (C12P) and octadecyl (C18P) phosphonic acids over the LSMO half-metallic oxide. Alkylphosphonic acids form ordered self-a…

Direct Imaging of Current-Induced Antiferromagnetic Switching Revealing a Pure Thermomagnetoelastic Switching Mechanism in NiO.

2020

We unravel the origin of current-induced magnetic switching of insulating antiferromagnet/heavy metal systems. We utilize concurrent transport and magneto-optical measurements to image the switching of antiferromagnetic domains in specially engineered devices of NiO/Pt bilayers. Different electrical pulsing and device geometries reveal different final states of the switching with respect to the current direction. We can explain these through simulations of the temperature induced strain and we identify the thermomagnetoelastic switching mechanism combined with thermal excitations as the origin, in which the final state is defined by the strain distributions and heat is required to switch th…

Domain wall induced modulation of low field H-T phase diagram in patterned superconductor-ferromagnet stripes

2019

We present a systematic study of the magnetic domain wall induced modulation of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) in Nb/Ni bilayer stripes. By varying the thickness of the Ni layer from 20 nm to 100 nm we have been able to measure the low field Tc-H phase diagram spanning the Neel domain wall and Bloch domain wall range of thicknesses. Micromagnetic simulations and magnetic force microscopy measurements confirmed a stronger out-of-plane stray field in the Bloch domain walls compared to the Neel walls. A suppression in Tc was observed in the magnetization reversal region of the Ni film, the magnitude of which followed linearly to the strength of the out-of-plane stray field due to …

Magneto-optical Investigations of Nanostructured Materials Based on Single Molecule Magnets Monitor Strong Environmental Effects

2007

The determination of the magnetic properties of molecular magnets in environments similar to those used in spintronic devices is fundamental for the development of applications. Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecular cluster systems that display magnetic hysteresis of dynamical origin at low temperature. As they behave like perfectly monodisperse nanomagnets and show clear macroscopic quantum effects in their magnetic properties, they are extremely appealing candidates for the forthcoming generation of molecular devices: they have been proposed as efficient systems for quantum computation, ultra-high-density magnetic recording media, and molecular spintronic systems. These attractive …

Defect induced room temperature ferromagnetism in high quality Co-doped ZnO bulk samples

2021

The nature of the often reported room temperature ferromagnetism in transition metal doped oxides is still a matter of huge debate. Herein we report on room temperature ferromagnetism in high quality Co-doped ZnO (Zn1-xCoxO) bulk samples synthesized via standard solid-state reaction route. Reference paramagnetic Co-doped ZnO samples with low level of structural defects are subjected to heat treatments in a reductive atmosphere in order to introduce defects in the samples in a controlled way. A detailed structural analysis is carried out in order to characterize the induced defects and their concentration. The magnetometry revealed the coexistence of a paramagnetic and a ferromagnetic phase …
