Explaining Ethiopia’s Growth Acceleration—The Role of Infrastructure and Macroeconomic Policy

Summary Ethiopia has experienced an impressive growth acceleration over the past decade. This was achieved on the back of an economic strategy emphasizing public infrastructure investment supported by heterodox macro-financial policies. This paper identifies the drivers of Ethiopia’s recent growth episode and examines the extent to which they were typical or unique. It combines country-specific information with the results of a cross-country panel regression model. The commentary to the Hippocratic treatise De humoribus, which was accepted as an authentic Galenic work till recent times, uses to be nowadays assigned to a mid-XVIth. century author of false ancient manuscripts, the Greek Andreas Darmarios. In spite of this, the text presents several kinds of problems that suggest a careful revisiting of the question. This article presents some of such problems and looks for a different explanation by means of the interaction of the languages involved in the transmission of the text.

Promoting self-employment: Does it create more employment and business activity?

International audience; We assess the economic impact of reforms promoting self-employment in the three countries that have implemented such reforms since the early 2000s: the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and France. To that end, we use an unbalanced cross country-industry dataset of 4,226 observations, including 12 OECD countries and 20 market industries, over the 1995-2016 period. We first observe, using country-level data, that the share of self-employed workers in total employment is quite stable or declines over the period in all countries in our dataset, except in the three countries where large reforms promoting self-employment have been implemented, and only after these reforms. …

In the middle of the sixteenth-century under the direct influence of Vesalius's works there arose in Spain a movement devoted to the renewal of anatomical knowledge. It was one of the initial forces in the spread of the Vesalian reform, but in spite of that it has been almost completely ignored by specialized historical research.' Several well-known inductive inference strategies change the actual hypothesis only when they discover that it “provably misclassifies” an example seen so far. This notion is made mathematically precise and its general power is characterized. In spite of its strength it is shown that this approach is not of universal power. Consequently, then hypotheses are considered which “unprovably misclassify” examples and the properties of this approach are studied. Among others it turns out that this type is of the same power as monotonic identification.
