Hydrological effects of a layer of vegetation ash on underlying wettable and water repellent soil

2012

Abstract Hydrological processes after a wildfire may take place under soil conditions altered by heat and by the presence of ash. Soil and ash interact as a two-layer system with poorly understood hydrological properties, especially when ash covers water repellent soil. Here we quantify the effect of an ash layer (0, 5, 15 and 30 mm depth) covering wettable and water repellent soil on (i) the hydrological response and the mechanism of runoff generation and (ii) the water repellency dynamics, for a rainfall event followed by different drying periods and a second rainfall event. Laboratory rainfall simulation experiments (82.5 mm h − 1 during 40 min) at small plot-scale (0.09 m 2 ) were perfo…

Determining the potential impacts of fire and different land uses on splash erosion in the margins of drylands

2021

Abstract This research aimed to estimate the splash erosion and its evolution during the first months in specific land uses after a forest fire. The study area was located in Congosto (North-West Spain), in the margins of Spanish drylands, after a wildfire occurred in May 2012, which burned 15.56 ha of scrubland and Pinus reforestation. Two different burned land uses were selected and compared to control areas: i) burned pine forest; and, scrublands. Rainfall intensity and the number, sizes and speed of raindrops were measured by an optical disdrometer and soil loss by funnels. Moreover, infiltration, soil moisture content, aggregate stability, water repellence, pH and organic matter were a…

Analysis of paper by laser-induced plasma spectroscopy

2001

Abstract Material distributions in paper and paper coatings are important factors which determine the characteristics and quality of paper. We have used laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) to determine various properties of coated and uncoated papers. Depth profiles of double coated papers were determined. Microscopic variations of pigments in a double-coated paper were analyzed. It was observed, that the two coating layers can be distinguished, if they differ enough in composition. Filler distributions of uncoated copier papers were determined. The surface of the paper was studied for five samples containing different amounts of binder in the coating. Lateral contamination in paper an…
