Monotone cubic spline interpolation for functions with a strong gradient
2021
Abstract Spline interpolation has been used in several applications due to its favorable properties regarding smoothness and accuracy of the interpolant. However, when there exists a discontinuity or a steep gradient in the data, some artifacts can appear due to the Gibbs phenomenon. Also, preservation of data monotonicity is a requirement in some applications, and that property is not automatically verified by the interpolator. Hence, some additional techniques have to be incorporated so as to ensure monotonicity. The final interpolator is not actually a spline as C 2 regularity and monotonicity are not ensured at the same time. In this paper, we study sufficient conditions to obtain monot…
Busyness of audit committee directors and quality of financial information in India
2016
The audit committees, as a part of the internal corporate governance mechanisms, play an important role to enhance the financial reporting quality. The busyness of audit committee members of a firm in boards and committees of other firms can affect its independent functioning, ceteris paribus. The current study examines, first, the association between multiple directorships of audit committee members and quality of financial reporting in India, second, whether endogenously determined busyness limits of busyness of the audit committee members provide better insights than those exogenously mandated by regulators. The study finds that endogenously determined busyness limits of sub-samples and …
Predicting the landslides triggered by the 2009 96E/Ida tropical storms in the Ilopango caldera area (El Salvador, CA): optimizing MARS-based model b…
2019
The main topic of this research was to evaluate the effect in the performance of stochastic landslide susceptibility models, produced by differences between the triggering events of the calibration and validation datasets. In the Caldera Ilopango area (El Salvador), MARS (multivariate adaptive regression splines)-based susceptibility modeling was applied using a set of physical–environmental predictors and two remotely recognized landslide inventories: one dated at 2003 (1503 landslides), which was the result of a normal rainfall season, and one which was produced by the combined effect of the Ida hurricane and the 96E tropical depression in 2009 (2237 landslides). Both the event inventorie…

SPECIAL SPLINES OF HYPERBOLIC TYPE FOR THE SOLUTIONS OF HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER 3-D PROBLEMS IN POROUS MULTI-LAYERED AXIAL SYMMETRY DOMAIN
2017
In this paper we study the problem of the diffusion of one substance through the pores of a porous multi layered material which may absorb and immobilize some of the diffusing substances with the evolution or absorption of heat. As an example we consider circular cross section wood-block with two layers in the radial direction. We consider the transfer of heat process. We derive the system of two partial differential equations (PDEs) - one expressing the rate of change of concentration of water vapour in the air spaces and the other - the rate of change of temperature in every layer. The approximation of corresponding initial boundary value problem of the system of PDEs is based on the cons…
Constraining Unmodeled Physics with Compact Binary Mergers from GWTC-1
2020
We present a flexible model to describe the effects of generic deviations of observed gravitational wave signals from modeled waveforms in the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors. With the detection of 11 gravitational wave events from the GWTC-1 catalog, we are able to constrain possible deviations from our modeled waveforms. In this paper we present our coherent spline model that describes the deviations, then choose to validate our model on an example phenomenological and astrophysically motivated departure in waveforms based on extreme spontaneous scalarization. We find that the model is capable of recovering the simulated deviations. By performing model comparisons we observe t…
Spline Histogram Method for Reconstruction of Probability Density Functions of Clusters of Galaxies
2003
We describe the spline histogram algorithm which is useful for visualization of the probability density function setting up a statistical hypothesis for a test. The spline histogram is constructed from discrete data measurements using tensioned cubic spline interpolation of the cumulative distribution function which is then differentiated and smoothed using the Savitzky-Golay filter. The optimal width of the filter is determined by minimization of the Integrated Square Error function. The current distribution of the TCSplin algorithm written in f77 with IDL and Gnuplot visualization scripts is available from this http URL
SPECIAL HPERBOLIC TYPE APPROXIMATION FOR SOLVING OF 3-D TWO LAYER STATIONARY DIFFUSION PROBLEM
2019
In this paper we examine the conservative averaging method (CAM) along the vertical z-coordinate for solving the 3-D boundary-value 2 layers diffusion problem. The special parabolic and hyperbolic type approximation (splines), that interpolate the middle integral values of piece-wise smooth function, is investigated. With the help of these splines the problems of mathematical physics in 3-D with respect to one coordinate are reduced to problems for system of equations in 2-D in every layer. This procedure allows reduce also the 2-D problem to a 1-D problem and the solution of the approximated problem can be obtained analytically. As the practical application of the created mathematical mode…
Thermodynamic consistency of the equation of state of strongly interacting matter
2004
Addressing strongly interacting matter in the region of energy density where the hadronic gas phase coexists with the quark-gluon plasma phase, we discuss how thermodynamic consistency can be used to constrain the equation of state for uniform matter and we illustrate the method by constructing a T{sub c}-dependent family of thermodynamically consistent equations of state based on simple spline interpolations between the gas and plasma phases.
Transfer coefficients for evaporation of a system with a Lennard-Jones long-range spline potential
2007
International audience; Surface transfer coefficients are determined by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations for a Lennard-Jones fluid with a long-range spline potential. In earlier work A. Røsjorde et al., J. Colloid Interface Sci. 240, 355 2001; J. Xu et al., ibid. 299, 452 2006, using a short-range Lennard-Jones spline potential, it was found that the resistivity coefficients to heat and mass transfer agreed rather well with the values predicted by kinetic theory. For the long-range Lennard-Jones spline potential considered in this paper we find significant discrepancies from the values predicted by kinetic theory. In particular the coupling coefficient, and as a consequence the…
