Comparing Spatial and Spatio-temporal FPCA to Impute Large Continuous Gaps in Space

2018

Multivariate spatio-temporal data analysis methods usually assume fairly complete data, while a number of gaps often occur along time or in space. In air quality data long gaps may be due to instrument malfunctions; moreover, not all the pollutants of interest are measured in all the monitoring stations of a network. In literature, many statistical methods have been proposed for imputing short sequences of missing values, but most of them are not valid when the fraction of missing values is high. Furthermore, the limitation of the methods commonly used consists in exploiting temporal only, or spatial only, correlation of the data. The objective of this paper is to provide an approach based …

Analyzing Temperature Effects on Mortality Within theREnvironment: The Constrained Segmented Distributed Lag Parameterization

2010

Here we present and discuss the R package modTempEff including a set of functions aimed at modelling temperature effects on mortality with time series data. The functions fit a particular log linear model which allows to capture the two main features of mortality- temperature relationships: nonlinearity and distributed lag effect. Penalized splines and segmented regression constitute the core of the modelling framework. We briefly review the model and illustrate the functions throughout a simulated dataset.

Special Splines of Exponential Type for the Solutions of Mass Transfer Problems in Multilayer Domains

2016

We consider averaging methods for solving the 3-D boundary-value problem of second order in multilayer domain. The special hyperbolic and exponential type splines, with middle integral values of piece-wise smooth function interpolation are considered. With the help of these splines the problems of mathematical physics in 3-D with piece-wise coefficients are reduced with respect to one coordinate to 2-D problems. This procedure also allows to reduce the 2-D problems to 1-D problems and the solution of the approximated problemsa can be obtained analytically. In the case of constant piece-wise coefficients we obtain the exact discrete approximation of a steady-state 1-D boundary-value problem.…

Assessment of Gully Erosion Susceptibility Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines and Accounting for Terrain Connectivity

2017

In this work, we assessed gully erosion susceptibility in two adjacent cultivated catchments of Sicily (Italy) by employing multivariate adaptive regression splines and a set of geo-environmental variables. To explore the influence of hydrological connectivity on gully occurrence, we measured the changes of performance occurred when adding one by one nine predictors reflecting terrain connectivity to a base model that included contributing area and slope gradient. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the ROC curve were used to evaluate model performance. Gully predictive models were trained in both the catchments and submitted to internal (in the calibration cat…

Prediction of BOD5 content of the inflow to the treatment plant using different methods of black box - the case study

2020

The publication presents the possibility of modeling in a 1 d advance of the content of organic compounds in the influent wastewater to the treatment plant, where the content of these compounds is determined by both the biochemical and chemical oxygen demand. To predict the quality of the wastewater at the inflow a set of indicators where used to make measurements on a daily basis. In order to develop statistical models 3 methods where used, namely: multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), boosted trees (BT), and genetic programming (GP). The carried-out calculations showed that, to calculate the BOD5 there can only be used models developed on the basis of the value of daily wastewa…

A reexamination of voltage distortion for classical carrier-based vs B-Spline modulation of three-phase Voltage Sources Inverters

2015

Voltage waveform improvement has been the object of several investigations for many years and a manifold of different solutions have been proposed to reduce the harmonic content in Voltage Source Inverters (VSI) power application. In many cases this improvements have been obtained by modifying the reference voltage modulating signal. The recent introduction of cardinal B-spline functions, used as carrier signals, has given rise to a new modulation technique whose main characteristic is a lower value of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). After the discussion on the B-Spline modulation principle and on its computational effort, a performance comparisons is carried out by means of Total Harm…

Predicting gully occurrence at watershed scale: Comparing topographic indices and multivariate statistical models

2020

In this study, the ability of five topographic indices to predict the gully trajectories observed in two adjacent watersheds located in Sicily (Italy) was evaluated. Two of these indices, named MSPI and MTWI, as far as we know, have never been employed to this aim. They were obtained by multiplying the stream power index (SPI) and the topographic wetness index (TWI), respectively, by the convergence index (CI). The predictive ability of the topographic indices was measured by using both cut-off independent (AUC: area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) and dependent statistics (Cohen's kappa index κ, sensitivity, specificity). These statistics were calculated also for 100 MAR…

A comparison of nonparametric methods in the graduation of mortality: Application to data from the Valencia Region (Spain)

2006

[EN] The nonparametric graduation of mortality data aims to estimate death rates by carrying out a smoothing of the crude rates obtained directly from original data. The main difference with regard to parametric models is that the assumption of an age-dependent function is unnecessary, which is advantageous when the information behind the model is unknown, as one cause of error is often the choice of an inappropriate model. This paper reviews the various alternatives and presents their application to mortality data from the Valencia Region, Spain. The comparison leads us to the conclusion that the best model is a smoothing by means of Generalised Additive Models (GAM) with splines. The most…

Prediction of debris-avalanches and -flows triggered by a tropical storm by using a stochastic approach: An application to the events occurred in Moc…

2019

Abstract Landslides are among the most dangerous natural processes. Debris avalanches and debris flows in particular have often caused casualties and severe damage to infrastructures in a wide range of environments. The assessment of susceptibility to these phenomena may help policy makers in mitigating the associated risk and thus it has attracted special attention in the last decades. In this experiment, we assessed susceptibility to debris-avalanche and -flow landslides by using a stochastic approach. Two different modeling techniques were employed: i) Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and ii) Logistic Regression (LR). Both MARS and LR allow for calculating the probability …
