AbstractBinding of coat protein (CP) to the 3′ nontranslated region (3′-NTR) of viral RNAs is a crucial requirement to establish the infection of Alfamo- and Ilarviruses. In vitro binding properties of the Prunus necrotic ringspot ilarvirus (PNRSV) CP to the 3′-NTR of its genomic RNA using purified E. coli- expressed CP and different synthetic peptides corresponding to a 26-residue sequence near the N-terminus were investigated by electrophoretic mobility shift assays. PNRSV CP bound to, at least, three different sites existing on the 3′-NTR. AbstractAdvances in structural and biochemical properties of carmovirus movement proteins (MPs) have only been obtained in p7 and p9 from Carnation mottle virus (CarMV). Alignment of carmovirus MPs revealed a low conservation of amino acid identity but interestingly, similarity was elevated in regions associated with the functional secondary structure elements reported for CarMV which were conserved in all studied proteins. AbstractThe movement protein (MP) of Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) is required for cell-to-cell movement. MP subcellular localization studies using a GFP fusion protein revealed highly punctate structures between neighboring cells, believed to represent plasmodesmata. Deletion of the RNA-binding domain (RBD) of PNRSV MP abolishes the cell-to-cell movement. A mutational analysis on this RBD was performed in order to identify in vivo the features that govern viral transport. Genetic lesions associated with Muller's ratchet in an RNA virus

The molecular basis of Muller's ratchet has been investigated using the important animal pathogen foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). Clones from two FMDV populations were subjected to serial plaque transfers (repeated bottleneck events) on host BHK-21 cells. Relative fitness losses were documented in 11 out of 19 clones tested. Small fitness gains were observed in three clones. One viral clone attained an extremely low plating efficiency, suggesting that accumulation of deleterious mutations had driven the virus near extinction. Neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. It is one of the most frequent tumors of neural origin and its presence is one of the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type I (NF-I). Neurofibromatosis type I is an autosomal dominantly inherited disease due to an alteration in the long arm of chromosome 17. About 50% of NF-I patients have no family history of the disease. Hot spots and gluon field fluctuations as causes of eccentricity in small systems

We calculate eccentricities in high energy proton-nucleus collisions, by calculating correlation functions of the energy density field of the Glasma immediately after the collision event at proper time tau = 0. We separately consider the effects of color charge and geometrical hot spot fluctuations, analytically performing the averages over both in a dilute-dense limit. We show that geometric fluctuations of hot spots inside the proton are the dominant source of eccentricity whereas color charge fluctuations only give a negligible correction. The size and number of hot spots are the most important parameters characterizing the eccentricities.

Neutrino and dark radiation properties in light of recent CMB observations

Recent cosmic microwave background measurements at high multipoles from the South Pole Telescope and from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope seem to disagree in their conclusions for the neutrino and dark radiation properties. In this paper we set new bounds on the dark radiation and neutrino properties in different cosmological scenarios combining the ACT and SPT data with the nine-year data release of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP-9), baryon acoustic oscillation data, Hubble Telescope measurements of the Hubble constant, and supernovae Ia luminosity distance data. Model independent constraints on mass-varying neutrino scenarios

Models of dark energy in which neutrinos interact with the scalar field supposed to be responsible for the acceleration of the Universe usually imply a variation of the neutrino masses on cosmological time scales. In this work we propose a parametrization for the neutrino mass variation that captures the essentials of those scenarios and allows one to constrain them in a model independent way, that is, without resorting to any particular scalar field model. Using WMAP 5 yr data combined with the matter power spectrum of SDSS and 2dFGRS, the limit on the present value of the neutrino mass is m(0) equivalent to m(nu)(z = 0) 0), totally consistent with no mass variation.
