Innervated Island Flaps in Morphofunctional Vulvar Reconstruction

2000

In this article, the authors present their own experience in vulvar reconstruction following vulvectomy using two different innervated island flaps according to the size and site of the defect. Island-flap mobilization is possible thanks to the rich blood supply of the perineal region. The methods described are a "V-Y amplified sliding flap from the pubis" and a "fasciocutaneous island flap" raised from one or both gluteal folds. The V-Y amplified sliding flap from the pubis is indicated when the defect is symmetric and located anteriorly. This flap is harvested from the pubis and vascularized by the deep arterial network of the pubis. Sensory innervation is provided by branches of the ileo…

Prospective seroepidemiologic study of human papillomavirus infection as a risk factor for invasive cervical cancer

1997

Background: Major risk factors for invasive cervical cancer include infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), infection with other sexually transmitted pathogens (e.g., Chlamydia trachomatis), and smoking. Since exposures to these risk factors can be related, the contribution of any single factor to cervical carcinogenesis has been difficult to assess. We conducted a prospective study to define the role of HPV infection in cervical carcinogenesis, with invasive cancer as an end point. Methods: A nested case‐control study within a joint cohort of 700 000 Nordic subjects was performed. The 182 women who developed invasive cervical cancer during a mean follow-up of 5 years were matched with 5…

A polymorphism of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist plays a prominent role within the interleukin-1 gene cluster in vulvar carcinogenesis

2003

Abstract Objective . The interleukin-1 (IL-1) family, that is, IL-1α and β and the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA), is known to modulate various tumorgenic and tumorcidal effects in humans. Its biological function in squamous cell carcinogenesis of various anatomical sites has been stressed. Although various studies showed a certain association between genes encoding the IL-1 family and human malignancies, no data with respect to vulvar cancer have been published to date. Methods . We ascertained four polymorphisms of the IL-1α gene ( IL1A C[−889]T), the IL-1β gene ( IL1B promoter C[-511]T and IL1B exon 5 position +3953), and the IL-1RA gene ( IL1RN intron 2) in 68 patients with surgicall…

Laparoscopic Radical Hysterectomy After Concomitant Chemoradiation in Locally Advanced Cervical Cancer: A Prospective Phase II Study

2015

Abstract Study Objective To assess the feasibility of total robotic radical surgery (TRRS) in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) who receive chemoradiation therapy (CT/RT). Design A prospective (preplanned) study of a nonrandomized controlled trial (Canadian Task Force classification level 2). Setting Catholic University of the Sacred Hearth, Rome, Italy. Patients Between September 2013 and January 2016, a total of 40 patients with LACC (Federation Internationale de Gynecologie et d'Obstetrique stage IB2–III) were enrolled in the study. Interventions Robotic radical hysterectomy (RRH) plus pelvic and/or aortic lymphadenectomy was attempted within 6 weeks after CT/RT. The …

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in young patients : a 26-year clinicopathologic retrospective study in a Brazilian specialized center

2020

Made available in DSpace on 2020-12-10T20:02:53Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-05-01 Background: To describe the clinicopathologic profile of young patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and compare to middle-aged and elderly adults. Material and Methods: Patients' individual records were reviewed for clinicopathologic data. Eighty-nine patients with age 18-45 years old met the inclusion criteria of the study. Two additional groups of middle-aged (n=89) and old (n=89) adults were set to comparative analysis. Results: Young patients represented 11.9% of all patients diagnosed with HNSCC. Women were more affected by HNSCC in the young and elder gro…

Association between obesity and vulvar cancer recurrence: an analysis of the AGO-CaRE-1 study

2020

ObjectiveObesity is associated with worse survival and an increased risk of relapse in several malignancies. The influence of obesity on vulvar cancer recurrence has not been previously described. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association between obesity and tumor recurrence in patients with vulvar cancer.MethodsThis is an analysis of the AGO-CaRE-1 study. Patients diagnosed with squamous cell vulvar cancer (stage IB and higher), treated in 29 cancer centers between January 1998 and December 2008, were registered in a centralized database. The cohort was divided into two gropus depending on the body mass index (BMI) (<30 vs ≥30 kg/m²). Descriptive statistics, su…

About invasive cervical cancer: a French population based study between 1998 and 2010

2015

Abstract Objectives The new French cancer plan provides the implementation of organized screening. To make an assessment of the situation, we aim to describe clinical, tumor and survival characteristics of patients with invasive cervical cancer. Study design Data on women suffering from invasive cervical cancer and diagnosed from 1998 to 2010 were provided by the Cote d’Or breast cancer registry. Survival was described using the Kaplan–Meier method and prognostic factors of survival were estimated in a Cox proportional hazard model. Results On the whole, 1019 cancers have been collected including 311 (30.5%) invasive ones. The peak incidence was between 40 and 49 years, with an average age …

A comparison of transhiatal and transthoracic resections on the prognosis in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus

2006

The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term prognosis for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus treated either by the transhiatal (TH) or by the transthoracic (TT) operative approach. Two hundred and twenty-nine patients (median age: 56 (29-84) years) with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus underwent esophageal resection between September 1985 and April 2004. In 70 patients, the transhiatal approach and in 159, the transthoracic approach was applied. An extended mediastinal lymph-node dissection was only carried out in the course of the transthoracic technique.Demographic data and tumor stages were comparable in both groups. A significantly better long-term survival was o…
