Melt flow instability and vortex structures in Czochralski growth under steady magnetic fields

2002

Abstract The hydrodynamics of melt motion in the CZ-process of silicon single crystal growth in axial and axial–radial magnetic fields is studied using a physical model. The modeling liquid is eutectics InGaSn. Most attention is paid to the problem of flow stability. A multi-channel system gathering data is used to define the pattern and dynamics of velocity disturbances. Instant spatial distributions of the electric potential induced by motion in the melt are obtained. Temporal evolution of the instant distributions in vertical and horizontal planes of the working volume is under investigation.

Double cross-linked polyetheretherketone proton exchange membrane for fuel cell

2012

Abstract The proton exchange membrane based on polyetheretherketone was prepared via two steps of cross-linking. The properties of the double cross-linked membrane (water uptake, proton conductivity, methanol permeability and thermal stability) have been investigated for fuel cell applications. The prepared membrane exhibited relatively high proton conductivity, 3.2 × 10 −2  S cm −1 at room temperature and 5.8 × 10 −2  S cm −1 at 80 °C. The second cross-linking significantly decreased the water uptake of the membrane. The performance of direct methanol fuel cell was slightly improved as compared to Nafion ® 117 due to its low methanol permeability. The results indicated that the double cros…

Evaluation of the optimal renewable electricity mix for Lampedusa island: The adoption of a technical and economical methodology

2020

Abstract Worldwide, the majority of small islands not connected to the main grid is still dependent on fossil fuels. From an economic and environmental point of view, this condition is no more sustainable given the high costs for electricity generation and the high level of pollutant emissions. Furthermore, the dependence on fossil fuel represents a risk for the security of the supply of several small developing Countries since they are obliged to import those resources from foreign Countries. The introduction of renewable energy sources in small islands represents a valid solution to solve these problems. In this context, the paper investigates the case of Lampedusa, a small Italian island…

Grid Stability Improvement Using Synthetic Inertia by Battery Energy Storage Systems in Small Islands

2022

In this paper, the synthetic inertia need of the small island of Pantelleria in the Mediterranean Sea is assessed. Firstly, the optimal renewable energy mix able to minimize the Levelized Cost of Energy for the generation system of the island is evaluated, considering the yearly load demand and the characteristics of the local natural resources. The optimal energy mix introduces in the island a quota of power generation with static power converters interfaced to the grid that could jeopardize the security of the system if not suitably controlled. Therefore, the inherent inertial response of the diesel generators of the system is calculated hour by hour for each month of one year, considerin…

Messenger RNA degradation is initiated at the 5′ end and follows sequence- and condition-dependent modes in chloroplasts

2011

Using reporter gene constructs, consisting of the bacterial uidA (GUS) coding region flanked by the 5' and 3' regions of the Chlamydomonas rbcL and psaB genes, respectively, we studied the degradation of mRNAs in the chloroplast of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in vivo. Extending the 5' terminus of transcripts of the reporter gene by more than 6 nucleotides triggered rapid degradation. Placing a poly(G) tract, known to pause exoribonucleases, in various positions downstream of the 5' terminus blocked rapid degradation of the transcripts. In all these cases the 5' ends of the accumulating GUS transcripts were found to be trimmed to the 5' end of the poly(G) tracts indicating that a 5' → 3' exori…

The impact factor as a measuring tool of the prestige of the journals in research assessment in mathematics

2016

The (2-year) Impact Factor of Thomson-Reuters (IF) has become the fundamental tool for analysing the scientific production of academic researchers in a lot of countries. In this article we show that this index and the ordering criterion obtained by using it are highly unstable in the case of mathematics, to the extent that sometimes no reliability can be assigned to its use. We explain the reasons of this behaviour by the specific properties of the mathematical journals and publications, attending mainly the point of view of the researchers in pure mathematics. Using the Journal Citation Report list of journals as a source of information, we analyse the stability in the position of the math…

Oilseed treatment by ultrasounds and microwaves to improve oil yield and quality: An overview.

2016

International audience; Efficiency is a key point to ensure the profitability in the production of vegetable oils from oilseeds. To maximize the recovery yields of seed oils, the traditional process involves mechanical expression followed by subsequent chemical extraction using organic solvents (e.g. hexane). Besides health, environmental, and economic related issues to the use of organic solvents, thermal treatment of seeds during conventional oil extraction process inevitably leads to chemical changes (e.g. changes in macronutrients such as protein denaturation/degradation in the meal, oil oxidation, and changes in minor constituents such as fatty acids, sterols, phenolic compounds and to…

Asymptotic behaviour of mixed-type circuits. Delay time predicting

1991

In the preceding chapter we have shown that the delay time problem in integrated circuits leads us to consider mixed-type circuits with distributed elements described by Telegraph Equations and lumped resistive and capacitive elements (Figure 4.5). Moreover, the well-posedness of the mathematical model (P(B, V0)) = (E) + (BC) + (IC) has been studied, various conditions for the existence, uniqueness and L2stability of different kind of solutions being formulated.

Secondary implant stability outcome of immediate versus late placed variable-thread implants in the maxilla. A retrospective cohort study

2017

BACKGROUND The healing of xenograft augmentated intra-alveolar gaps following immediate implant placement (IMIP) after tooth extraction is likely to differ in time and density compared to the native bone part that directly contacts the implant. MATERIAL AND METHODS Secondary implant stability (SIS) data recorded 2-3 months following a late implant placement protocol (LIP) (n= 43) and 6-8 months following an immediate implant placement protocol (IMIP) (n=33) of variable-thread implants (Nobel Active™) in the maxilla were retrospectively collected from files of 63 patients (42 females, 21 males). Statistical analysis was performed using a generalized estimating equation model (GEE). Data spli…

Personality traits and unemployment: Evidence from longitudinal data

2012

This study contributes to the literature on how personality is related to labour market success by providing evidence on the relationship between personality traits and unemployment. After accounting for reverse causality and measurement error, our results suggest that higher openness was associated with increased cumulative unemployment at the prime working age. It seems that this connection occurs because individuals with higher openness enter into unemployment spells more frequently – not because their unemployment spells would be particularly long. peerReviewed
