Geminal Imidazolium Salts: A new Class of Gelators

The gelling behavior of some geminal diimidazolium salts was investigated in solvents differing in polarity and hydrogen bond donor ability. The used salts, namely the 3,3'-di-n-decyl-1,1'(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium dibromide [p-Xyl-(decim)(2)][Br](2) (1), the 3,3'-di-n-dodecyl-1,1'(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium dibromide [p-Xyl-(dodecim)(2)][Br](2) (2), and the 3,3'-di-n-dodecyl-1,1'(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium ditetrafluoroborate [p-Xyl-(dodecim)(2)][BF(4)](2) (3), differ in the alkyl chain length and in the anion properties, such as size, shape, and coordination ability. Atomic and Electronic Structure of the Corundum (0001) Surface

AbstractThe electronic structure and geometry of the Al terminated corundum (0001) surface were studied using a slab model within the ab-initio Hartree-Fock technique. The distance between the top Al plane and the next O basal plane is found to be considerably reduced on relaxation (by 0.57 Å, i.e. by 68% of the corresponding interlayer distance in the bulk). An interpretation of experimental photoelectron spectra (UPS Hel) and metastable impact electron spectra (MIES) is given. Calculated projected densities of states exhibit a strong dependence on the relaxation of surface atoms.

Electronic structure and thermodynamic stability of double-layeredSrTiO3(001)surfaces:Ab initiosimulations

Using the B3PW hybrid exchange-correlation functional within density-functional theory and employing Gaussian-type basis sets, we calculated the atomic and electronic structures and thermodynamic stability of three double-layered (DL) SrTiO3(001) surfaces: (i) SrO-terminated, (ii) TiO2-terminated, and (iii) (2×1) reconstruction of TiO2-terminated SrTiO3(001) recently suggested by Erdman et al. [Nature (London) 419, 55 (2002)]. A thermodynamic stability diagram obtained from first-principles calculations shows that regular TiO2- and SrO-terminated surfaces are the most stable. Surface sulci in squeezed soft solids

The squeezing of soft solids, the constrained growth of biological tissues, and the swelling of soft elastic solids such as gels can generate large compressive stresses at their surfaces. This causes the otherwise smooth surface of such a solid to become unstable when its stress exceeds a critical value. Previous analyses of the surface instability have assumed two-dimensional plane-strain conditions, but in experiments isotropic stresses often lead to complex three-dimensional sulcification patterns. Phase-bistable patterns and cavity solitons induced by spatially periodic injection into vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

Spatial rocking is a kind of resonant forcing able to convert a self-oscillatory system into a phase-bistable, pattern forming system, whereby the phase of the spatially averaged oscillation field locks to one of two values differing by $\ensuremath{\pi}$. We propose the spatial rocking in an experimentally relevant system---the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL)---and demonstrate its feasibility through analytical and numerical tools applied to a VCSEL model. We show phase bistability, spatial patterns, such as roll patterns, domain walls, and phase (dark-ring) solitons, which could be useful for optical information storage and processing purposes.

A molecular dynamics study of large-scale reversible aggregation of anisotropic particles

We report findings of 1000 ps molecular dynamics simulations of a bidimensional system of 4050 Lennard–Jones particles with electric dipoles, undergoing spinodal separation. This simple system is used to model the reversible aggregation of building blocks bearing specific and fixed adhesion sites at their surface. Aggregation regions so obtained resemble images of self-assembled biological structures. Statistical analyses of these regions evidence the interplay of thermodynamic instability and of interaction range between the attachment sites. Dynamics of multilayer adsorption: a Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract The growth of an adsorbed film at an initially empty surface which is exposed at time t = 0 to a gas is studied within the framework of a kinetic lattice gas model by Monte Carlo simulation. The model includes an attractive potential V ( z ) between adsorbed particles at distance z from the surface, V(z) = −A z 3 and a nearest-neighbor attractive interaction between the gas atoms. Several choices of the surface potential depth A , corresponding to different sequence of layering transitions, are considered. Enhanced Thermal Stability of Gold and Silver Nanorods by Thin Surface Layers

Using in situ transmission electron microscopy, we find that a carbon shell governs the morphological transitions of gold and silver nanorods upon heating. Encapsulated Ag nanorods show a surprising nonuniform sublimation behavior starting from one side and leaving behind the shell. Uncovered gold nanorods transform their shape to spheres well below the bulk melting temperature through surface diffusion, which is prevented by a thin carbon shell.
