Lifetime of the superconductive state in long Josephson junctions in presence of non-Gaussian noise sources

2012

The effects of Lévy noise sources on the transient dynamics of long Josephson junctions (LJJ) are investigated in the presence of both a periodical current signal and a noise source with Gaussian, Cauchy-Lorentz or Levy-Smirnov probability distributions. In particular, by numerically integrating the Sine-Gordon equation, the mean escape time (MET) from the superconductive metastable state is obtained as a function both of the frequency of the periodical force and amplitude of the noise signal. We find resonant activation (RA) and noise enhanced stability (NES). Significative changes in RA and NES are observed by using Lévy noise sources with different statistics. MET is also studied as a fu…

Reversible switching of the Au(111) work function by near infrared irradiation with a bistable SAM based on a radical donor–acceptor dyad

2019

We describe the modification of the work function (WF) of Au(111) upon deposition of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with two donor–acceptor (D–A) systems, one based on a ferrocene-polychlorotriphenylmethyl radical (Fc–PTM) dyad and another on its non-radical dyad analogue. Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) has been used to measure the changes in the Contact Potential Difference (CPD) between the tip and the SAM under application of a cycling sweep of direct current (DC) voltage bias. These measurements showed that both SAMs exhibit a hysteretic behaviour in their WF changes. Interestingly, the hysteresis loop of the radical SAM is notably reduced when irradiated with NIR light, which w…

Stability of solution for Rao-Nakra sandwich beam model with Kelvin-Voigt damping and time delay

2022

This paper deals with stability of solution for a one-dimensional model of Rao?Nakra sandwich beam with Kelvin?Voigt damping and time delay given by ??1?1?????? ? ??1?1?????? ? ??(??? + ?? + ??????) ? ?????????? ? ??????????( ? , ?? ? ??) = 0, ??3?3?????? ? ??3?3?????? + ??(??? + ?? + ??????) ? ?????????? = 0, ????????? + ?????????????? ? ????(??? + ?? + ??????)?? ? ?????????? = 0. A sandwich beam is an engineering model that consists of three layers: two stiff outer layers, bottom and top faces, and a more compliant inner layer called ?core layer?. Rao?Nakra system consists of three layers and the assumption is that there is no slip at the interface between contacts. The top and bottom lay…

General approach to spatiotemporal modulational instability processes

2011

International audience; In this article, we derive the general exact solution of the modulation instability gain. The solution described here is valid for 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D cases considering any temporal response function of the medium and with possible higher order Kerr nonlinearities. In particular, we show that the gain induced by modulation instability is initial condition dependent, while the usual calculations do not lead to such a dependence. Applications for current and high-interest nonlinear propagation problems, such as 1-D optical fiber propagation with delayed Raman response and 2-D filamentation in gases, are investigated in detail. More specifically, we demonstrate that the 2-D …

Structure–activity relationships, and drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic properties for indazole piperazine and indazole piperidine inhibitors of RO…

2007

ROCK has been implicated in many diseases ranging from glaucoma to spinal cord injury and is therefore an important target for therapeutic intervention. In this study, we have designed a series of 1-(4-(1H-indazol-5-yl)piperazin-1-yl)-2-hydroxy(or 2-amino) analogs and a series of 1-(4-(1H-indazol-5-yl amino)piperidin-1-yl)-2-hydroxy(or 2-amino) inhibitors of ROCK-II. SR-1459 has IC50 = 13 nM versus ROCK-II while the IC50s for SR-715 and SR-899 are 80 nM and 100 nM, respectively. Many of these inhibitors, especially the 2-amino substituted analogs for both series, are modest/potent CYP3A4 inhibitors as well. However, a few of these inhibitors (SR-715 and SR-899) show strong selectivity for R…

Co-occurrence of resonant activation and noise-enhanced stability in a model of cancer growth in the presence of immune response.

2006

We investigate a stochastic version of a simple enzymatic reaction which follows the generic Michaelis-Menten kinetics. At sufficiently high concentrations of reacting species, the molecular fluctuations can be approximated as a realization of a Brownian dynamics for which the model reaction kinetics takes on the form of a stochastic differential equation. After eliminating a fast kinetics, the model can be rephrased into a form of a one-dimensional overdamped Langevin equation. We discuss physical aspects of environmental noises acting in such a reduced system, pointing out the possibility of coexistence of dynamical regimes where noise-enhanced stability and resonant activation phenomena …

Impact of konjac glucomannan on interactions aroma compound - potato starch in a hydrated gel

2016

The objective of this study is to demonstrate that the presence of konjac glucomannan (KGM) in a potato starch matrix enhances its physical stability without inhibiting the molecular encapsulation of aroma compounds by amylose. For that purpose, the two selected polysaccharides are from plant tubers, abundant in nature.Starch is known to interact with volatile compounds either by trapping in amorphous phase or by forming inclusion complexes. This phenomenon is called molecular encapsulation. However, at high water content, these starchy matrices exhibit syneresis that can be harmful to the stability of the aroma compounds trapping over time. KGM has the ability to form highly viscous soluti…

On the K-stability of complete intersections in polarized manifolds

2011

We consider the problem of existence of constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics on complete intersections of sections of vector bundles. In particular we give general formulas relating the Futaki invariant of such a manifold to the weight of sections defining it and to the Futaki invariant of the ambient manifold. As applications we give a new Mukai-Umemura-Tian like example of Fano 5-fold admitting no Kaehler-Einstein metric and a strong evidence of K-stability of complete intersections on Grassmannians.

Durability of calcarenitic hypogea in the underground cultural heritage of Palermo (Sicily)

2011

The paper deals with the stability conditions of hypogea, several hundred m 2 wide, dating from the Punic period to the XIX century, dug out of the calcarenitic table that makes up the bedrock of the Plain of Palermo in the Fossa della Garofala. This work concerns the influence that the shape of the hypogea and the characteristics of the lithotypes wields on the instability and decay phenomena taking place, by mean of laboratory tests on the calcarenite and parametric numerical models. The comparison between the numerical models and the actual instability phenomena validated the use of the empirical formula of Hoeck to the mechanical characterization of complex structured rock-mass in soft …
