Periodic Motion for an Imperfect Solar Sail Near an Asteroid

2014

In this paper we consider the Hill 3-body problem with the extra effect of the solar radiation pressure as a model for the motion of a solar sail close to an asteroid. To model the sail’s acceleration, we include both reflectivity and absorption of the sail’s material. We describe the most relevant dynamical properties of the system for different reflectivity and absorption coefficients as well as different fixed sail orientations. We show families of periodic orbits, describe how they relate to the parameters of the sail and discuss their stability.

Hot-cavity spectroscopy of dark pulse Kerr combs in microresonators

2019

Kerr frequency combs are generated through cascaded four-wave mixing in high-Q microresonators [1]. These devices are pumped with a continuous-wave laser and modulational instability (MI) is responsible for the growth of the initial comb lines. Since it is easier to satisfy the MI phase matching condition in the anomalous dispersion regime, most studies on Kerr combs have focused on anomalous dispersion microresonators. However, coherent microresonator combs can also take place in the normal dispersion regime. In these combs, phase matching is attained with the aid of the mode coupling between transverse modes of the microresonator [2]. One particularly interesting comb state that operates …

On the dynamics of dislocation patterning

1997

Recent computer simulations on dislocation patterning have provided remarkable results in accordance with empirical laws. Moreover, several analytical models on dislocation dynamics have provided qualitative insight on dislocation patterning. However, a model, based on partial differential equations, which gives a dynamical evolution of dislocation patterns in function of measurable variables still missing. Here, we give a re-formulation of a model proposed some years ago. From this formulation, we obtained that the onset of a dislocation instability is related to the applied stress. The analytical and numerical results reported are partial and studies on this direction are under developmen…

Search for long-lived charged massive particles with the D0 detector

2009

Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T20:51:12Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-04-22 Science and Technology Facilities Council We search for long-lived charged massive particles using 1.1fb-1 of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̄ Collider. Time-of-flight information is used to search for pair produced long-lived tau sleptons, gauginolike charginos, and Higgsino-like charginos. We find no evidence of a signal and set 95% C.L. cross section upper limits for staus, which vary from 0.31 to 0.04 pb for stau masses between 60 and 300 GeV. We also set lower mass limits of 206 GeV (171 GeV) for pair produced charged gauginos (Higgsinos). © 2009 Th…

Calculation of the kaon B parameter using strictly local sum rules

1991

The kaon B-parameter is computed in the framework of strictly local QCD sum rules for a threepoint function involving pseudoscalar currents. As an application of these sum rules we derive a low energy formula for the B-parameter. We show that strictly local QCD sum rules yield more reliable results than other QCD sum rules, since they need less phenomenological information and do not suffer from stability problems. Our result for the B-parameter isB=0.74±0.17.

Suppression of noise in FitzHugh–Nagumo model driven by a strong periodic signal

2005

Abstract The response time of a neuron in the presence of a strong periodic driving in the stochastic FitzHugh–Nagumo model is investigated. We analyze two cases: (i) the variable that corresponds to membrane potential is subjected to fluctuations, and (ii) the recovery variable associated with the refractory properties of a neuron is noisy. The influence of noise sources on the delay of the response of a neuron is analyzed. In both cases we observe a resonant activation-like phenomenon and suppression of noise: the negative effect of fluctuations on the process of spike generation is minimal near the resonance region. The phenomenon of noise enhanced stability is also observed in both case…

Orbital dimerization in NaTiSi2O6: An orbital analogue of the spin-Peierls phase transition

2004

We measure the Raman scattering spectra of NaTiSi2O6, analyze the vibrational properties, and study the origin of the phase transition in this compound. In this quasi-one-dimensional S = 1/2 system we observe anomalous high-temperature phonon broadenings, and large changes of the phonon energies and line-widths across the phase transition temperature of 210 K. These results, combined with theoretical considerations, indicate that the phonon anomalies originate from an orbital order-disorder type of phase transition. We find that the high temperature dynamical Jahn-Teller phase of NaTiSi2O6 exhibits a spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry into a dimerized, Jahn-Teller distorted, orb…

Instability of single-frequency operation in semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillators.

2002

The transition of the single-frequency oscillation of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator for sufficiently large coupling strengths into two-frequency oscillation is predicted and is observed experimentally. The critical value of the coupling strength at which the bifurcation occurs is a function of pump intensity ratio and cavity losses. The supercritical bifurcation in the oscillation spectrum is analogous to the second-order phase transition.

Vibrational properties of delafossiteCuGaO2at ambient and high pressures

2005

In this paper we investigate the vibrational properties of $\mathrm{Cu}\mathrm{Ga}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ delafossite by means of Raman experiments and ab initio calculations. Both investigations have been performed at ambient pressure and also at high pressure. The two Raman-active modes have frequencies ${w}_{{E}_{g}}=368\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and ${w}_{{A}_{1g}}=729\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, and pressure coefficients $2.78\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}∕\mathrm{GPa}$ $({E}_{g})$ and $4.64\ifmmode\pm\else\text…
