Synthesis and properties of aromatic ionenes

1993

Cationic polyelectrolytes with aromatic segments can be synthesized by a repetitive alkylation reaction. The structure of the products, their synthesis and their solubility are described. All ionenes are not, or only in small amounts, water soluble. The best solubility can be achieved by mixtures of polar protic and aprotic solvents. Variations of the counterion produces sufficient solubility in THF. All ionenes show a typical polyelectrolyte effect. The thermal stability of aromatic ionenes and the glass transition temperature is dominated by the nature of the counterion. The molecular weight of oligomers can be described by using a combination of a conductive titration method and an ion s…

Electrically conductive TCNQ complexes of aromatic ionenes

1995

New types of complex salts of 7,7',8,8'-tetracyanoquinodimethane with aromatic ionenes and their model compounds were prepared. The electrical conductivity and the activation energy were measured and discussed in relation to their structure. The effects of the nature of the aromatic unit, and the flexibility and rigidity of the polymer backbone were compared with the corresponding model compounds. The effects of frequency and temperature are discussed in terms of the molecular structure of the complex. The electroconductivity at room temperature of the 1 :1 polymer complex salts was found to be between 2 x 10 -4 and 7 x 10 -5 S/cm, while that of the model complex salts was between 1.3 x 10 …

PBI-based composite membranes for polymer fuel cells

2010

Abstract In the present study poly(2,2-(2,6-pyridin)-5,5-bibenzimidazole) was used for the preparation of novel MEAs for high-temperature polymer fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). We prepared hybrid materials with two types of silica fillers in order to increase the MEA performances using this polymer. The membranes were characterized in terms of their microstructure and thermal stability. Cell operation tests and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the MEAs. A maximum power density of about 80 mW cm−2 was obtained at 300 mA cm−2 by using an imidazole-modified silica filler. The EIS technique showed that the fillers chiefly help to reduce the charge transfer r…

Biomolecular-solvent stereodynamic coupling probed by deuteration.

1983

Thermodynamic interpretation of experiments with isotopically perturbed solvent supports the view that solvent stereodynamics is directly relevant to thermodynamic stability of biomolecules. According with the current understanding of the structure of the aqueous solvent, in any stereodynamic configuration of the latter, connectivity pathways are identifiable for their topologic and order properties. Perturbing the solvent by isotopic substitution or, e.g., by addition of co-solvents, can therefore be viewed as reinforcing or otherwise perturbing these topologic structures. This microscopic model readily visualizes thermodynamic interpretation. In conclusion, the topologic stereodynamic str…

Time-Resolved study of network self-organization from a biopolymeric solution

1991

Time-resolved studies of network self-organization from homogeneous solutions of the representative biostructural polymer agarose are presented. Solutions are temperature quenched and observed by several techniques. Consistent with previous suggestions by the authors, experiments at concentrations up to about 1.75% w/v provide direct kinetic evidence for the occurrence of at least two distinct processes, leading, in sequence, to self-assembly. These are as follows: (a) a liquid–liquid phase separation of the solution occurring via spinodal demixing and resulting in two sets of regions that have, respectively, higher and lower than average concentrations of random-coiled polymers; and (b) th…

Demixing and polymerization in systems of anisotropic globular particles: A molecular dynamics simulation study

1991

We report a first set of results of Molecular Dynamics simulations of phase separation in a two-dimensional system of identical particles bearing attachment sites at their surface. Morphology of regions of aggregation so obtained appear similar to images of biologically self-assembled structures. Also, they evidence the relevance of the region of thermodynamic instability and of the presence and range of interaction of specific attachment sites. Particles of our system are apt to represent indifferently, though grossly, globular proteins or rigid cells, bearing specific and fixed adhesion sites at their surface. Results illustrate some basic aspects of the origin of the morphology of extend…

Self-Diffusion of Associating Star-Shaped Polymers

2016

The dynamics of associating bonds in transient polymer networks exerts a paramount influence on their relaxation and time-dependent mechanical properties. In particular, diffusive motion of polymers mediated by the dissociation and association equilibrium of reversible junctions can affect the materials’ structural stability, dynamic mechanical properties, and a broad spectrum of functionality that arises from the constant motion of polymer chains. In this work, forced Rayleigh scattering is used to measure the diffusion of terpyridine end-functionalized four-arm poly(ethylene glycol) polymers transiently interlinked by zinc ions in organic solvent across a wide range of length and time sca…

Cyclic Analogs of Desferrioxamine E Siderophore for 68Ga Nuclear Imaging: Coordination Chemistry and Biological Activity in Staphylococcus aureus

2021

As multidrug-resistant bacteria are an emerging problem and threat to humanity, novel strategies for treatment and diagnostics are actively sought. We aim to utilize siderophores, iron-specific strong chelating agents produced by microbes, as gallium ion carriers for diagnosis, applying that Fe(III) can be successfully replaced by Ga(III) without losing biological properties of the investigated complex, which allows molecular imaging by positron emission tomography (PET). Here, we report synthesis, full solution chemistry, thermodynamic characterization, and the preliminary biological evaluation of biomimetic derivatives (FOX) of desferrioxamine E (FOXE) siderophore, radiolabeled with 68Ga …
