Treatment with metformin is associated with a prolonged survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
2019
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most lethal cancers. Nutrition- and life style-associated risk factors are increasingly prevalent. Metformin, the mainstay of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-treatment, reduces the risk of hepatocarcinogenesis. However, its influence on the prognosis of patients with HCC has not been investigated on a large scale, yet. METHODS Five thousand and ninety-three patients treated for HCC between 2000 and 2016 at three referral centres were included in this retrospective multicentre study. The aim of this study was to assess whether treatment with metformin for T2DM is associated with a prolonged overall survival (OS) in patients diagnosed wi…
Knowing the Risk: Crickets Distinguish between Spider Predators of Different Size and Commonness
2013
Predators unintentionally release chemical and other cues into their environment that can be used by prey to assess predator presence. Prey organisms can therefore perform specific antipredator behavior to reduce predation risk, which can strongly shape the outcome of trophic interactions. In contrast to aquatic systems, studies on cue-driven antipredator behavior in terrestrial arthropods cover only few species to date. Here, we investigated occurrence and strength of antipredator behavior of the wood cricket Nemobius sylvestris toward cues of 14 syntopic spider species that are potential predators of wood crickets. We used two different behavioral arena experiments to investigate the infl…
3D Morphology, ultrastructure and development of Ceratomyxa puntazzi stages: first insights into the mechanisms of motility and budding in the Myxozo…
2012
Free, amoeboid movement of organisms within media as well as substrate-dependent cellular crawling processes of cells and organisms require an actin cytoskeleton. This system is also involved in the cytokinetic processes of all eukaryotic cells. Myxozoan parasites are known for the disease they cause in economical important fishes. Usually, their pathology is related to rapid proliferation in the host. However, the sequences of their development are still poorly understood, especially with regard to pre-sporogonic proliferation mechanisms. The present work employs light microscopy (LM), electron microscopy (SEM, TEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in combination with specific…
The Projects of Guccia: Second Stage
2018
G.B. Guccia had an ambitious goal: developing the Circolo Matematico di Palermo into the international association of mathematicians. The pursuit of this aim was influenced by his two most important mathematical relationships: with Vito Volterra and with Henri Poincare. The time came to obtain a professorship, and to consolidate the Circolo Matematico di Palermo. On both issues, G.B. Guccia succeeded, although through rather turbulent processes. The celebration of the Heidelberg International Congress of 1904 was a fundamental moment for the international expansion of the Circolo Matematico di Palermo. The Rome International Congress of 1908 gave G.B. Guccia the opportunity to realize his a…
The pathology of bladder cancer: An update on selected issues
2006
OBJECTIVE: To achieve a closer relationship between urologists and pathologists and to use a common language and identical objectives in the pathology of bladder cancer. METHODS AND RESULTS: Special emphasis was given to an analysis of the new World Health Organization (WHO) grading system, to the interpretation of the last Tumour-Nodes-Metastasis staging rules, and to identifying new markers of prognostic significance in clinical practice. A consensus was achieved on the main points. CONCLUSIONS: The 2004 WHO grading system must become acceptable to clinicians, perhaps by a minimal modification of the present terminology. Simple transurethral resection-biopsy should be expressed in terms o…
