Serum coding and non-coding RNAs as biomarkers of NAFLD and fibrosis severity
2019
Background: In patients with NAFLD liver biopsy is the gold standard to detect NASH and stage liver fibrosis. We aimed to identify differentially expressed mRNAs and non-coding RNAs in serum samples of biopsy-diagnosed mild and severe NAFLD patients with respect to controls and to each other. Methods: We first performed a whole transcriptome analysis through microarray (n=12: 4 CTRL; 4 mild NAFLD: NAS≤4 F0; 4 severe NAFLD NAS≥5 F3), followed by validation of selected transcripts through qPCRs in 88 subjects: 63 NAFLD, 25 CTRL. A similar analysis was also performed on HepG2 exposed to Oleate:Palmitate or only Palmitate (cellular model of NAFL/NASH) at intracellular/extracellular levels. Tran…
Gastric and Rectal Metastases from Malignant Melanoma Presenting with Hypochromic Anemia and Treated with Immunotherapy
2017
The authors present a case of an 80-year-old Caucasian male with multiple gastric and rectal metastases from malignant melanoma presenting with hypochromic anemia as the sole symptom of disease without evidence of cutaneous and ocular tumor localization. The patient had a medical history positive for malignant lentigo melanoma of the occipital region of the scalp and early stage laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and prostatic carcinoma treated with radiation therapy. The authors make some considerations on intestinal involvement by metastatic melanoma and discuss the choice of not treating with endoscopic procedures the gastric metastatic lesions most likely responsible for the clinical sig…
Perioperative Chemotherapy in Poorly Differentiated Neuroendocrine Neoplasia of the Bladder: A Multicenter Analysis
2020
There is scant evidence about optimal management of poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma of the bladder (BNEC). We performed a multicenter retrospective study on BNEC patients from 13 Italian neuroendocrine-dedicated centers to analyze strategies associated with better outcomes. Mixed adeno-neuroendocrine carcinomas (MANEC) were included. We analyzed overall survival (OS) in the overall cohort, relapse-free survival (RFS) in radically operated patients and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients who received chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Fifty-one BNEC patients were included (male: 46, median age: 70 years). Overall, median OS was 16.0 months, radical tumor resection wa…

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer
2005
Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in potentially resectable stage IIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has become standard of treatment in the last years. Two randomised pioneer phase III trials conducted with second generation platinum combinations had demonstrated an advantage in survival of induction chemotherapy followed by surgery versus surgery alone. Subsequently, a wide number of phase II studies with third generation platinum-based doublets or triplets have increased the evidence of the activity as well as the good tolerability of this approach. Nowadays, the main topics of ongoing clinical research are to assess the role of induction chemotherapy in early stage disease, and the role …
Luca Ronconi e il meraviglioso nell'opera: il caso Monteverdi
2021
Luca Ronconi staged Monteverdi's Orfeo in Florence, at Goldoni Theater in 1998. The present article discusses this production in the context of Ronconi's activity as opera director; the Baroque idea of "meraviglia" is also taken into account.
Phase recovery by using optical fiber dispersion
2014
We propose a simple and fast procedure to retrieve the phase profile of arbitrary light pulses. It combines a first experimental stage, followed by a one-step numerical stage. To this end, it is necessary to perform a Fresnel transform, which is obtained just by propagating the light pulses through an optical fiber. We experimentally test this proposal recovering the phase profile in the light pulses provided by a passively mode-locked laser. The proposal is then compared with a temporal variation of the Gerchberg–Saxton recursive algorithm, which is specially modified for this purpose. Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Validation of the Working Alliance Inventory–Observer Short Version with male intimate partner violence offenders
2018
The working alliance is a key element to increase intimate partner violence (IPV) offenders' motivation, adherence to treatment, and active participation in batterer intervention programs (BIPs). The objective of the present study is to assess the psychometric properties and factor structure of the Working Alliance Inventory-Observer Short Version (WAI-O-S) with a sample of IPV offenders. The sample was 140 men convicted for IPV and court-mandated to a community-based BIP. Inter-rater agreement and reliability were evaluated by computing the intraclass correlation coefficient. To test the latent structure a Bayesian confirmatory factor analysis approach was used. To test criterion-related v…
Cervical vertebral maturation and its relationship to circum-pubertal phases of the dentition in a cohort of Portuguese individuals
2019
Background To explore the relationship between individual skeletal maturity as assessed by Cervical Vertebral Maturity method (CVM), circum-pubertal phases of the dentition (early mixed, intermediate mixed, late mixed and early permanent) and chronlogical age in a cohort of Portuguese individuals. Material and Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. The sample comprised 300 Caucasian Portuguese subjects aged 6 to 16 years, (137 boys and 163 girls). All the participants had good quality panoramic and lateral cephalometric radiographs. Subject skeletal maturity was evaluated using the CVM method. Dental age evaluation was determined by using panoramic radiographs and dental ca…
A foraminiferal assemblage as a bioevent marker of the main Ladinian transgressive stage in the Betic Cordillera, southern Spain
2005
Abstract The Betic Cordillera comprises the mountain range in the southern Iberian Peninsula that extends from Cadiz to Alicante, which displays typical features of alpine cordilleras. The Betic Cordillera includes two large geological tectonic domains, namely an External Zone, and an Internal Zone. The External Zone is essentially composed of epicontinental Triassic rocks that consist of the Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Keuper facies. The Buntsandstein facies rarely occur in outcrops, whereas the Keuper stratigraphic successions are truncated. The Muschelkalk facies frequently displays complete successions that are very useful for interpreting the Ladinian stage palaeogeography. The Musc…
