Coexpression of receptor-tyrosine-kinases in gastric adenocarcinoma-a rationale for a molecular targeting strategy?

AIM: To define the (co-)expression pattern of target receptor-tyrosine-kinases (RTK) in human gastric adenocarcinoma. METHODS: The (co-)expression pattern of VEGFR1-3, PDGFRα/β and EGFR1 was analyzed by RT-PCR in 51 human gastric adenocarcinomas. In addition, IHC staining was applied for confirmation of expression and analysis of RTK localisation. RESULTS: The majority of samples revealed a VEGFR1 (98%), VEGFR2 (80%), VEGFR3 (67%), PDGFRα (82%) and PDGFRβ (82%) expression, whereas only 62% exhibited an EGFR1 expression. 78% of cancers expressed at least four out of six RTKs. Quantitative Evaluation of HER-2/neuStatus in Breast Cancer by Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization and by Immunohistochemistry With Image Analysis

We correlated quantitative results obtained in 40 invasive breast cancer cases for HER-2 gene amplification by fluorescence in situ hybridization with protein expression by immunohistochemical studies with computer-assisted image analysis. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) results were quantified as the mean number of fluorescent signals per nucleus, and immunohistochemical slides were read by semiquantitatively assessing membranous immunostaining intensity in tumor cells vs nonneoplastic breast tissue or quantitatively evaluated by image analysis. Chromoendoscopy and intravital staining techniques are synonymous methods for the endoscopic early detection of malignant changes in the intestinal tract. Endoscopic intravital staining involves the use of absorptive stains (methylene blue and Lugol's solution), contrast stains (indigo carmine) and reactive stains (Congo red). Lugol's iodine solution is used to identify superficial carcinomas in the squamous epithelium of the oesophagus. Monoclonal antibodies A33/22 and La11G7 have been used to study the distribution of the corre-sponding antigens, PwA33 and La, on the lampbrush chromosome loops and nucleoplasmic structures of P. waltl oocytes, using immunofluorescence, confocal laser scanning microscopy and immunogold labeling. The results obtained with these antibodies have been compared with those obtained with the Sm-antigen-specific monoclonal antibody Y12. All these monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) labeled the matrices of the majority of normal loops along their whole length. The Innervation of Taste Buds in the Soft Palate of the Rat as Revealed by Methylene Blue Staining.

Light microscopic data on the innervation of taste buds in the soft palate of the rat obtained by methylene blue (MB) supravital staining are presented here for the first time. The taste pore including subpopulations of taste bud cells and nerve fibers were stained. Intragemmal nerve fibers were detected ascending up to the taste pore; this suggests the possibility of additional paracellular pathways in taste transduction directly via nerve fibers. Moreover, relatively large bulbous or laminar enlargements of the intragemmal nerve fibers were found. The branches of these nerve fibers, showing minute spiny protuberances, appeared to anastomose.
