Les reboisements en cèdre de l’Atlas en Sicile
2013
Atlas cedar plantations in Sicily Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) has been widely diffused in reforestation in Europe, particularly in France. In Italy, the Atlas cedar covers about 2600 ha. This paper examines 7 cedar plantations in Sicily, in the various typical condition of the island, evaluating their dendrometric characters in order to estimate productivity and growth capacity. The results show that this specie is both highly suitable for wood production, and has a landscape restoration role in difficult ecological conditions such as the Mediterranean mountain environment is. The stands production is comparable with the better results reported for the French plantations. Some cultivatio…
Colonization of eurasian jay Garrulus glandarius (L.) and holm oaks Quercus ilex (L.): the establishment of ecological interactions in urban areas.
2016
Here we describe the relationship between holm oak seedling diffusion and jay recolonization in an urban orchard.

Multi-criterial approaches for the inventory and the evaluation of traditional cultural landscapes
2008
The Mediterranean environment is characterized by an high variability in ecological features and by a rich biodiversity, whose interaction has generated complex agro-forestry systems. The resulting cultural landscapes can represent a remarkable trait of Italian landscape. Nonetheless, since several decades they are at risk mainly owing to the consequences of cultural intensification, that has turn out in new cultural models, i.e. specialized high density agronomic plantation, or in a progressive abandonment of agricultural land. In order to prevent the degradation or loos of these particular ecosystems, it becomes a priority to adopt measures for their preservation and promotion. Regardless…
The importance of terracing in the traditional cultural landscapes: the case study of Sicily (Italy)
2012
The landscapes formed by agricultural terraces are the natural result of the encounter between the characteristics of an environment and the creative force and genius of man, the slow evolution of this relationship between nature and culture, a collective project that balanced the need for producing with the resources available and the native character of the environment. These cultural processes produced a great variety of landscapes. However, they are not supported or confirmed by common inventories allowing to identify and classify the typical Main Traditional Landscape (MTL) within which very important is the role carried out by terraces and related man-made structures, both for natural…
Lack of phosphoserine phosphatase activity alters pollen and tapetum development in Arabidopsis thaliana.
2015
Formation of mature pollen grain, an essential process for the reproduction of higher plants, is affected in lines that are deficient in the enzymes of the phosphorylated pathway of serine biosynthesis (PPSB). Mutants of phosphoserine phosphatase (PSP), the enzyme that catalyses the last step of PPSB, are embryo-lethal. When they are complemented with a construct carrying PSP1 cDNA under the control of the 35S promoter (psp1.1 35S:PSP1), which is poorly expressed in anther tissues, plants display a wild-type phenotype, but are male-sterile. The pollen from the psp1.1 35S:PSP1 lines are shrunken and unviable. Here we report the morphological alterations that appear in the psp1.1 35S:PSP1 lin…
Rainwater harvesting in urban areas of developed countries. The state of the art (1980-2017)
2020
Many urban areas suffer from water scarcity although paradoxically, a local source such as rainwater is mostly treated as a risk rather than a valuable resource. This change of paradigm is included in the 'integrated water resources management' and 'demand management' approach. The aim of this research is to identify and analyse studies that explore subject matters concerning rainwater in the integrated management systems of water resources into developed countries. The research methodology consisted in a literature review (from the 1980s to 2017) of territorial studies that examine rainwater harvesting in urban areas of the developed countries. To this end, a bibliometric analysis has been…
