What if the masses of the first two quark families are not generated by the standard model Higgs boson?

2016

We point out that, in the context of the SM, $|V^2_{13}| + | V^2_{23}|$ is expected to be large, of order one. The fact that $|V^2_{13}| + |V^2_{23}| \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-3}$ motivates the introduction of a symmetry S which leads to $V_{CKM} ={1\>\!\!\!\mathrm{I}} $, with only the third generation of quarks acquiring mass. We consider two scenarios for generating the mass of the first two quark generations and full quark mixing. One consists of the introduction of a second Higgs doublet which is neutral under S. The second scenario consists of assuming New Physics at a high energy scale , contributing to the masses of light quark generations, in an effective field theory approach. This l…

Constraints on additionalZ′gauge bosons from a precise measurement of theZmass

1990

We analyze the constraints on the mass and mixing of superstring-inspired E{sub 6} {ital Z}{prime} neutral gauge boson that follow from the recent precise {ital Z} mass measurements and show that they depend very sensitively on the assumed value of the {ital W} mass and also, to a lesser extent, on the top-quark mass.

Measurement of the Effective Weak Mixing Angle inpp¯→Z/γ*→e+e−Events

2015

We present a measurement of the fundamental parameter of the standard model, the weak mixing angle, in $p\bar{p}\rightarrow Z/\gamma^{*}\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ events at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to 9.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The effective weak mixing angle is extracted from the forward-backward charge asymmetry as a function of the invariant mass around the Z boson pole. The measured value of $\sin^2\theta_{\text{eff}}^{\text{$\ell$}}=0.23146 \pm 0.00047$ is the most precise measurement from light quark interactions to date, with a precision close to the best LEP and SLD results.

Colloquium: New physics search with flavor in the LHC era

2013

We give a status report on quark flavour physics in view of the latest data from the B factories and the LHC, and discuss the impact of the latest experimental results on new physics in the MFV framework. We also show some examples of the implications in supersymmetry. A status report on quark flavor physics in view of the latest data from the B factories and the LHC is given, and the impact of the latest experimental results on new physics in the minimal flavor violation framework is discussed. Also shown are some examples of the implications in supersymmetry. Direct Bounds on Heavy Top-Like Quarks With Standard and Exotic Decays

2017

Heavy vector-like quarks with electric charge $Q=2/3$ (also called \textit{heavy tops}) appear naturally in many extensions of the Standard Model. Although these typically predict the existence of further particles below the TeV scale, direct searches for heavy tops have been performed assuming that they decay only into SM particles. The aim of this paper is to overcome this situation. We consider the most constraining experimental LHC searches for vector-like quarks, including analyses of the 36 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected in the latest run at 13 TeV of center of mass energy, as well as searches sensitive to heavy tops decaying into a new scalar, $S$. Combining all these, we derive bounds …

Search for a Heavy Toplike Quark inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2011

We present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy toplike (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb(-1) collected by the CDF II detector in pp collisions at √s=1.96 TeV. We perform parallel searches for t'→Wb and t'→Wq (where q is a generic down-type quark) in events containing a lepton and four or more jets. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t' quark mass, we set upper limits on the t't' production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to Wb (Wq) with mass below 358 (340) GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L.

Search for techniparticles in e +jets events at D0

2006

We search for the technicolor process ppbar -> rho_T/omega_T ->W+pi_T in events containing one electron and two jets, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390 pb-1, recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Technicolor predicts that technipions, pi_T, decay dominantly into b-bbar, b-cbar, or bbar-c, depending on their charge. In these events b and c quarks are identified by their secondary decay vertices within jets. Two analysis methods based on topological variables are presented. Since no excess above the standard model prediction was found, the result is presented as an exclusion in the pi_T vs. rho_T mass plane for a given set of model parameters.

Meson decay studies from MAMI A2

2019

Decays of the light mesons π0, η, ω, and η’ provide a unique laboratory to test fundamental aspects of hadron physics. Precision studies of such diverse topics as the light quark mass ratio, π−π scattering lengths, and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model are possible. Additionally, Dalitz decays of light mesons provide a way of measuring the electromagnetic meson transition formfactors in the time-like region. The A2 tagged photon facility at the Mainz Microtron provides a high yield of light mesons produced by photo-induced reactions on protons, which makes the experiment ideal for high precision measurements of meson decays. Presented here are the contributions made by the A2 c…

Symmetries in the Standard Model

2020

Symmetries in the Physical Laws of Nature lead to observable effects. Beyond the regularities and conserved magnitudes, the last decades in Particle Physics have seen the identification of symmetries, and their well-defined breaking, as the guiding principle for the elementary constituents of matter and their interactions. Flavour SU(3) symmetry of hadrons led to the Quark Model and the antisymmetry requirement under exchange of identical fermions led to the colour degree of freedom. Colour became the generating charge for flavour-independent strong interactions of quarks and gluons in the exact Colour SU(3) local gauge symmetry. Parity violation in weak interactions led to consider the chi…
