An attention-based weakly supervised framework for spitzoid melanocytic lesion diagnosis in whole slide images

2021

[EN] Melanoma is an aggressive neoplasm responsible for the majority of deaths from skin cancer. Specifically, spitzoid melanocytic tumors are one of the most challenging melanocytic lesions due to their ambiguous morphological features. The gold standard for its diagnosis and prognosis is the analysis of skin biopsies. In this process, dermatopathologists visualize skin histology slides under a microscope, in a highly time-consuming and subjective task. In the last years, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have emerged as a promising tool that could support pathologists in daily clinical practice. Nevertheless, no automatic CAD systems have yet been proposed for the analysis of spitzoi…

Monitoring of the smoking process by multicommutation Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy

2007

Abstract Nicotine was selected as the target molecule for monitoring of the smoking process by multicommutation Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The method involved the use of CHCl3 for on-line extraction of nicotine from tobacco, cigarette filters and tobacco ash from NH4OH alkalinized samples, and absorbance measurement of the characteristic band at 1316 cm−1 in the stopped-flow mode, by obtaining the peak area in the range between 1334 and 1300 cm−1. Under the best operational conditions, the procedure developed provided a detection limit of 0.05 mg mL−1 nicotine, corresponding to 0.5 mg g−1 in the solid sample, a relative standard deviation less than 2.5%, and a sampling …

Predicting school students’ physical activity intentions in leisure-time and school recess contexts: Testing an integrated model based on self-determ…

2021

BackgroundIdentifying psychological correlates of children's physical activity intentions may signpost potentially modifiable targets for interventions aimed at promoting physical activity participation. School recess and leisure-time outside of school are appropriate contexts in which such interventions may be delivered. However, few studies have identified correlates of physical activity intentions in these environments. Examining correlates in these contexts may provide formative evidence on which to base interventions to promote physical activity.PurposeThe current study adopted an integrated theoretical model to test relations between motivational constructs from self-determination the…

Analysis of Spatial Disparities by a Structural Equations Model

2008

This paper presents a new analytical framework for assessing spatial disparities among countries. It takes for granted that the analysis of a country’s performance cannot be limited solely to either economic or social factors. The aim of the paper is to combine relevant economic and non-economic (mainly social) aspects of a country’s performance in an integrated logical framework. Based on this idea, a structural simultaneous equation model will be presented and estimated in order to explore the direction of the causal relationship between the economic and the non-economic aspects of a country’s performance. Furthermore, an exploration of the trajectory that each country has registered over…

The defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in the Italian criminal justice system

2021

The criminal law standard of Beyond A Reasonable Doubt (BARD) constitutes an evidentiary and judicial rule, formulated and applied for centuries in common law jurisdictions, which was expressly stated in the Italian Code of Criminal Procedure only about fifteen years ago. Unfortunately, the concept of reasonable doubt is inherently complex and does not easily lend itself to definition or refinement. In this regard, the Author examines especially the various positions and elaborations developed by legal literature and case-law in Italy, proposing a specific interpretation of the BARD rule that enhances and completes the particular procedural connotations of the adversarial system adopted i…

Cognitive flexibility and reaction time improvements after cognitive training designed for men perpetrators of intimate partner violence: results of …

2022

AbstractPurpose Current interventions for intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators are designed to reduce IPV recidivism by treating risk factors and increasing protective factors. However, these interventions pay less attention to cognitive functioning in IPV perpetrators and how these variables interfere with the future risk of recidivism. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to compare the effectiveness of Standard Intervention Programs for men who perpetrate IPV [SIP] + cognitive training vs SIP + placebo training in promoting cognitive improvements and reducing recidivism. Furthermore, we also aimed to assess whether changes in the risk of recidivism would be related …

Nesting self-employment in education, work and family trajectories of Romanian migrant returnees

2019

Challenging a biased view towards self-employed returnees as neoliberal selves, as the normalized approach of the migration–development nexus tends to depict them, this article builds an alternative conceptual framework to unpack the variegated experiences of migrant returnees’ self-employment trajectories in post-socialist Romania. The authors argue that the overemphasis on the benefits of return migration for origin countries through the skewed focus on the migrants’ accrual of human and financial capital and their ostensible entrepreneurial orientation has resulted in disregarding more influential biographical and cultural aspects. Life story interviews with middle-aged participants reve…

The relationship among gender, interest in economic topics, media use, and the economic knowledge of students at vocational schools

2019

The results of numerous studies indicate that male students achieve better results on economic knowledge tests than their female classmates. Although this phenomenon has been known for a long time, the gender-specific mechanisms of this gap have not been explored in depth. According to social and educational scientific theories and the current state of research, interest and media use could be related to gender. In this study, we administered a German adaption of the internationally accepted Test of Economic Literacy to explore the gender gap in the economic knowledge of 983 students from 62 classes at 7 vocational secondary schools and commercial vocational schools specializing in business…

Leveraging technology for healthcare and retaining access to personal health data to enhance personal health and well-being

2021

Abstract Health data are a sensitive category of personal data. They can result in a high risk to individuals and health information-handling rights and opportunities unless there is a sufficient defense. Reasonable security standards are needed to protect electronic health records (EHRs). All personal data handling needs adequate explanation. Maintaining access to medical data, even in the developing world, would favor health and well-being across the world. Unfortunately, there are still countries that hinder the portability of medical records. Numerous occurrences have shown that it still takes weeks for medical data to be ported from one general physician to another. Cross-border portab…

Standards Initiatives for Software Product Line Engineering and Management within the International Organization for Standardization

2010

Software product line engineering is an established methodology for fast and effective development of software-intensive systems and services. To reap maximum benefits from the methodology, businesses typically need to implement coordinated changes in development methodologies, tools, product architectures, organizational designs, and business models. Product lines are developed in complex international software ecosystems, but there is no coordinated set of international standards for defining and leveraging the methodology. As a result, ecosystems cannot adopt standardized methods and tools for developing product lines, tool vendors face difficulties in developing tools to enable product …
