Institutional Functions as a Theoretical Nexus and Measurement Target in Sociology of Education

2017

The paper is devoted to methodological aspects of the study of institutional functions of education as one of the basic theoretical constructs of contemporary sociology of education. The author argues that the elaboration into the function problem also provides a direction for social-practical outputs of this branch of sociology, conceptual ground for its own theoretical, revitalizing its connection with general sociology. Without such elaboration, the author assumes, most of theoretical and empirical studies and measurements conducted by sociologists are doomed to thematic fragmentation, have slim chances to contribute to a shared sociological vision of education, delineate the area of ins…

Leadership and spirituality in business and public administration: a cross-cultural empirical study comparing the USA and France

2013

National audience; In this discussion we build on previous work on the role of ethics in shaping the behaviour of leaders in business and public administration to investigate the relationship between leadership spirituality, the environment springing from such leadership, and the resulting followers’ attributions of leader effectiveness in the USA and France. Survey data collected from the USA and France were used to test a composite construct of spiritual leadership including (a) accountability, (b) rationality, and (c) honesty. The results of hypothesis tested suggest followers’ attributions of leaders’ positive outcomes increase in proportion with increases in leader’s spirituality. Thes…

A Qualitative Study Based on the Reading-life Histories of Future Teachers

2015

Abstract One of the tools that have been used in research on literary education is what are known as reading-life histories or the reading autobiography. In this paper we will offer an analysis and some reflections on the different ways these can be used, by drawing on a sample of histories collected from students training to be teachers since the implementation of the new university curricula within what is known as the European Bologna process. The findings from this analysis open up a range of possibilities in research and innovation in literary training. Based on their previous experiences and recollections as readers, such narratives provide us with important information not only about…

Do key audit matters (KAMs) matter? : Auditors’ perceptions of KAMs and audit quality in Finland

2021

Purpose Key audit matters (KAMs) in International Standard for Auditing, 701 seek to enhance the value of the auditor’s report by increasing the transparency of how the audit was performed. The purpose of this study is to investigate how professional auditors themselves perceive the impact of KAMs on audit quality and audit effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach Statistical analyses of an electronic survey of certified public auditors (CPAs) in Finland. Findings Regarding the perceptions of KAMs, the authors found two dominant views on auditing: quality and efficiency. In general, the respondents did not consider that KAMs improve audit quality. However, auditors focusing on efficiency…

Reproducibility of Skin Temperature Response after Cold Stress Test Using the Game Ready System: Preliminary Study

2021

The objective of this preliminary study was to determine the reproducibility of lower limbs skin temperature after cold stress test using the Game Ready system. Skin temperature of fourteen participants was measured before and after cold stress test using the Game Ready system and it was repeated the protocol in four times: at 9:00, at 11:00, at 19:00, and at 9:00 h of the posterior day. To assess skin temperature recovery after cold stress test, a logarithmic equation for each region was calculated, and constant (β0) and slope (β1) coefficients were obtained. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error (SE), and within-subject coefficient of variation (CV) were determined. No …

Multimodality imaging strategies for the assessment of aortic stenosis: Viewpoint of the heart valve clinic international database (HAVEC) group

2016

International audience; Aortic stenosis is the most frequent valvular heart disease. In aortic stenosis, therapeutic decision essentially depends on symptomatic status, stenosis severity, and status of left ventricular systolic function. Surgical aortic valve replacement or transcatheter aortic valve implantation is the sole effective therapy in symptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis, whereas the management of asymptomatic patients remains controversial and is mainly based on individual risk stratification. Imaging is fundamental for the initial diagnostic work-up, follow-up, and selection of the optimal timing and type of intervention. The present review provides specific recomme…

Verbesserte Auswertbarkeit transitorisch evozierter otoakustischer Emissionen durch Korrelationsfilterung

1993

Hearing screening as well as evaluation of cochlear function under therapy with ototoxic agents or patients with various diseases is increasingly done by registration of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE). Usually the standard system ILO 88 Otodynamic Analyser is used, where until now emissions were analyzed subjectively. However, evaluation of signals may be difficult mainly in the hearing threshold area. In this article we describe a method to mathematically analyze registered emissions by correlation-filtering. This allows to better identify small specific responses, to further increase the sensitivity of TEOAE, and offers a more objective means for audiologic diagnoses.

Translating cross-lagged effects into incidence rates and risk ratios: The case of psychosocial safety climate and depression

2017

Longitudinal studies are the gold standard of empirical work and stress research whenever experiments are not plausible. Frequently, scales are used to assess risk factors and their consequences, and cross-lagged effects are estimated to determine possible risks. Methods to translate cross-lagged effects into risk ratios to facilitate risk assessment do not yet exist, which creates a divide between psychological and epidemiological work stress research. The aim of the present paper is to demonstrate how cross-lagged effects can be used to assess the risk ratio of different levels of psychosocial safety climate (PSC) in organisations, an important psychosocial risk for the development of dep…

Air pollution and airport apron workers: A neglected occupational setting in epidemiological research.

2020

Abstract Introduction Airport apron workers are occupationally exposed to jet exhaust and major concern is related to the exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) from aircrafts. To date, little attention has been given to occupational exposures to aircraft-related UFP, although aircraft engines have high emissions of ultrafine particles, which are orders of magnitude higher than residential exposure. UFP could possibly contribute to the development of cancer, heart disease, mental illness, and respiratory symptoms. In addition to particulate matter, apron workers are exposed to other polluting substances associated with vehicles, aircraft exhaust or direct fuel emissions. Methods We performed…

Efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy with grass allergens for seasonal allergic rhinitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2010

Background The benefit of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with grass allergens for seasonal allergic rhinitis has been extensively studied, but data on efficacy are still equivocal. Objective To assess the effectiveness of SLIT with grass allergens in the reduction of symptoms and medication in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis to grass pollen. Methods Computerized bibliographic searches of MEDLINE (1995-2010) were supplemented by hand searches of reference lists. Studies were included if they were double-blind randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing SLIT to placebo and if they included patients with history of allergy to grass pollen treated with natural grass pollen extracts.…
