An Innovative Weightbearing Device for Weightbearing 3-Dimensional Imaging for Foot and Ankle Surgery Preoperative Planning.

2021

ABSTRACT Three-dimensional preoperative planning has demonstrated multiple surgical advantages. Currently, we cannot carry out preoperative 3-dimensional planning of foot and ankle orthopedics in most hospitals due to the impossibility of performing weightbearing CT imaging. Our objective is to describe and evaluate an innovative accessible, simple, and effective device that simulates standing while in a supine position, to obtain 3-dimensional images supporting bodyweight load with a conventional CT machine. From a group of 30 volunteers, 10 patients were randomly selected and pressure and its distribution were analyzed while in a standing position in both feet. Differences between both fe…

Surgical Approach to Recurrent Cholangiocarcinoma.

2020

Background: For recurrent cholangiocarcinoma, systemic chemotherapy is the standard of care. Repeated resection is a potential curative treatment, but data are scarce and outcomes are not well defined so far. Summary: In the last decade there has been an increasing number of reports suggesting a survival benefit and even cure after repeated surgery. This is particularly true for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, where repeated resections offer similar or even better results than the first resection. In selected cases even a third liver resection is possible. In contrast, in perihilar and distal cholangiocarcinoma, re…

Imaging of hepatocellular carcinoma: a pilot international survey

2020

Purpose To perform an international survey on current practices in imaging-based surveillance, diagnosis, staging, and assessment of treatment response for HCC. Materials and methods Three themes were covered in this international survey: demographics of respondents and liver imaging expertise; imaging practices for screening, surveillance, diagnosis, staging, and assessment of treatment response for HCC; and diagnostic imaging systems used. Descriptive summaries were created. Results Of 151 respondents, 22.5% were from Asia, 6.0% from Europe, 19.9% from North America, 26.5% from South America, and 25.2% from Australasia; 57.0% respondents worked in academic and 34.4% in private or mixed se…

CT imaging of acute and chronic pyelonephritis: a practical guide for emergency radiologists

2020

Contrast-enhanced CT is not routinely indicated in uncomplicated urinary infections, but it may be necessary in patients with specific risk factors (i.e., diabetes, immunocompromised patients, history of stones, or prior renal surgery) or in patients not responding to antibiotics and in detecting complications of pyelonephritis. CT is the gold standard for imaging assessment of pyelonephritis severity. Imaging appearance of acute pyelonephritis, including focal (i.e., wedge-shaped zones of decreased attenuation or hypodense mass) and diffuse (i.e., global enlargement, poor parenchymal enhancement, lack of excretion of contrast, fat stranding) forms, needs to be differentiated from renal inf…

Gas-containing renal stones: a red flag for renal infection.

2022

Background Gas in the renal excretory system is described as a consequence of recent procedures but it can be a sign of severe conditions such as fistulas or infections; however, gas-containing renal stones are only rarely encountered. Purpose To describe the association of gas-containing renal stones and urinary tract infection. Material and Methods We performed a retrospective evaluation of the clinical and imaging findings in a series of six patients with gas-containing renal stones and compared our findings with those of patients with gas-containing renal stones reported in the literature. Urine and stone cultures were used as a diagnostic standard for urinary tract infection. Results I…

Kinetik von Indozyaningrün (ICG) und adjuvanter Einsatz zur transpupillaren Thermotherapie (TTT) pigmentarmer kleiner Aderhautmelanome

2004

BACKGROUND To determine the efficacy of intravenous indocyanine green (ICG) as an adjuvant to TTT for hypopigmented choroidal melanomas. PATIENTS AND METHODS ICG kinetics in melanoma tissue were evaluated by taking standardized ICG angiograms in 28 eyes with small choroidal melanomas. In a prospective non-randomized analysis 12 eyes with hypopigmented choroidal melanomas (posterior to the equator with thickness </= 4.5 mm) were treated with the TTT standard protocol developed by an intravenous injection of 100 mg ICG in 10 ml aqueous solvent 2 minutes after starting TTT. These eyes were followed-up for at least 22 months (mean 29). RESULTS Pharmacokinetic analyses revealed the onset of fluo…

Antivitamin K Drugs in Stroke Prevention

2014

Among the different subtypes of ischaemic strokes, almost 20 % are of cardiac origin. Different are the causes of cardioembolic stroke, but the most common is the atrial fibrillation, a supraventricular arrhythmia. Appropriate use of antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulants after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or ischaemic stroke depends on whether the underlying cause is cardioembolic or of presumed arterial origin. Adequate antiplatelet therapy is recommended for secondary prevention after cerebral ischaemia of presumed arterial origin, whether for patients with TIA and ischaemic stroke of cardiac origin, mainly due to atrial fibrillation. Vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) are highly effective …

Consensus statements and clinical recommendations on treatment indications, surgical procedures, prosthetic protocols and complications following All…

2017

Objectives The present consensus report critically evaluates the scientific evidence based on a comprehensive systematic review of the All-On-4 treatment concept, focusing primarily on the treatment indications, surgical procedures and prosthetic protocols, and secondarily on the mechanical and biological complications involved. Material and Methods A systematic review was made in advance of the meeting. Consensus statements, treatment guidelines and recommendations for future research were based on within-group as well as plenary debates and discussions of the systematic review. Results The main indication of All-On-4 standard care is an atrophic maxilla or mandible, with or without remnan…

Blood Alcohol Concentration-Related Lower Performance in Immediate Visual Memory and Working Memory in Adolescent Binge Drinkers

2017

The binge drinking (BD) pattern of alcohol consumption is prevalent during adolescence, a period characterized by critical changes to the structural and functional development of brain areas related with memory and cognition. There is considerable evidence of the cognitive dysfunctions caused by the neurotoxic effects of BD in the not-yet-adult brain. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) on memory during late adolescence (18–19 years old) in males and females with a history of BD. The sample consisted of 154 adolescents (67 males and 87 females) that were classified as refrainers if they had never previously drunk alc…
