A dynamical calibration of the mass–luminosity relation at very low stellar masses and young ages

Mass is the most fundamental parameter of a star, yet it is also one of the most difficult to measure directly. In general, astronomers estimate stellar masses by determining the luminosity and using the 'mass-luminosity' relationship, but this relationship has never been accurately calibrated for young, low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Masses for these low-mass objects are therefore constrained only by theoretical models. ChandraX‐Ray Observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster. I. Detection, Identification, and Determination of X‐Ray Luminosities

In this first of two companion papers on the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), we present our analysis of a 63 Ksec Chandra HRC-I observation that yielded 742 X-ray detections within the 30'x30' field of view. To facilitate our interpretation of the X-ray image, here we collect a multi-wavelength catalog of nearly 2900 known objects in the region by combining 17 different catalogs from the recent literature. We define two reference groups: an infrared sample, containing all objects detected in the K band, and an optical sample comprising low extinction, well characterized ONC members. Discovery of an Exceptionally Strong β -Decay Transition of F20 and Implications for the Fate of Intermediate-Mass Stars

A significant fraction of stars between 7 and 11 solar masses are thought to become supernovae, but the explosion mechanism is unclear. The answer depends critically on the rate of electron capture on ^{20}Ne in the degenerate oxygen-neon stellar core. However, because of the unknown strength of the transition between the ground states of ^{20}Ne and ^{20}F, it has not previously been possible to fully constrain the rate. By measuring the transition, we establish that its strength is exceptionally large and that it enhances the capture rate by several orders of magnitude. In-Flight Calibrations of UFFO-Pathfinder

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO), which will be launched onboard the Lomonosov spacecraft, contains two crucial instruments: UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) for detection and localization of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and the fast-response Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) designed for the observation of the prompt optical/UV counterparts. Here we discuss the in-space calibrations of the UBAT detector and SMT telescope. After the launch, the observations of the standard X-ray sources such as pulsar in Crab nebula will provide data for necessary calibrations of UBAT. Testing the companion hypothesis for the origin of the X-ray emission from intermediate-mass main-sequence stars

There is no straightforward explanation for intrinsic X-ray emission from intermediate-mass main-sequence stars. Therefore the observed emission is often interpreted in terms of (hypothesized) late-type magnetically active companion stars. We use Chandra imaging observations to spatially resolve in X-rays a sample of main-sequence B-type stars with recently discovered companions at arcsecond separation. We find that all spatially resolved companions are X-ray emitters, but seven out of eleven intermediate-mass stars are also X-ray sources. If this emission is interpreted in terms of additional sub-arcsecond or spectroscopic companions, this implies a high multiplicity of B-type stars. Firm …

A Broad Iron Line in the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrum of 4U 1705-44

We present the results of a Chandra 30 ks observation of the low-mass X-ray binary and atoll source 4U 1705-44. Here we concentrate on the study of discrete features in the energy spectrum at energies below ~3 keV, as well as on the iron Kalpha line, using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra satellite. Below 3 keV, three narrow emission lines are found at 1.47, 2.0, and 2.6 keV. The 1.47 and 2.6 keV lines are probably identified with Lyalpha emission from Mg XII and S XVI, respectively. The identification of the feature at ~2.0 keV is uncertain because of the presence of an instrumental feature at the same energy. The iron Kalpha line at ~6.5 keV is found …

First results of an Hα based search of classical Be stars in the Perseus Arm and beyond

We investigate a region of the Galactic plane, between 120 <= l <= 140 and -1 <= b <= +4, and uncover a population of moderately reddened (E(B-V) \sim 1) classical Be stars within and beyond the Perseus and Outer Arms. 370 candidate emission line stars (13 <= r <= 16) selected from the INT Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic plane (IPHAS) have been followed up spectroscopically. A subset of these, 67 stars with properties consistent with those of classical Be stars, have been observed at sufficient spectral resolution (Delta_lambda \sim 2 - 4 Angstrom) at blue wavelengths to narrow down their spectral types. On X-ray variability in ROSAT-PSPC observations of F7-K2 stars

We have analyzed the X-ray variability of dF7-dK2 stars in the solar neighborhood detected with the pointed ROSAT-PSPC observations. Our data base is the sample of all stars listed in the CNS3 catalog (Gliese & Jahrei β 1991) having a $B-V$ color between 0.5 and 0.9; it includes 70 pointed observations of 40 distinct stars or multiple systems. We have applied the unbinned Kolmogorov-Smirnov test on all X-ray photon time series of our sample: only 10 observations relative to 8 distinct stars are variable at a confidence level greater than 99% and 4 of them belong to multiple systems.
