Lithium in the intermediate age cluster NGC 3680: Following Li evolution along the C-M diagram

We present an analysis of high resolution spectroscopic observations (R 30 000, S=N =6 0 150) of 24 members of the intermediate age (1.5 Gyr) open cluster NGC 3680, covering all regions of the cluster colour-magnitude (C{M) diagram where cluster members are known to exist. These observations represent in many aspects challenges to our understanding of stellar interior and mixing. Four main sequence G stars have, within the errors, the same Li abundance, 0.3 dex lower than similar stars in the1 Gyr younger Hyades but comparable with those observed in the coeval cluster IC 4651. Accreting Pulsars: Mixing-up Accretion Phases in Transitional Systems

In the last 20 years our understanding of the millisecond pulsar population changed dramatically. Thanks to the large effective area and good time resolution of the NASA X-ray observatory Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we discovered that neutron stars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) spins at frequencies between 200 and 750 Hz, and indirectly confirmed the recycling scenario, according to which neutron stars are spun up to millisecond periods during the LMXB-phase. In the meantime, the continuous discovery of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars in binary systems in the radio and gamma-ray band (mainly with the Fermi Large Area Telescope) allowed us to classify these sources into two "spide…

On coronal structures and their variability in active stars: The case of Capella observed with Chandra/LETGS

In this paper we present a detailed analysis of two X-ray spectra of Capella, taken eleven months apart with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) of the Chandra Observatory. We have studied variability of the coronal emission over different time scales, both in the whole X-ray band and in narrow temperature ranges identified by lines. The comparison of the two observations shows that the whole coronal emission of Capella in March 2000 was 3% higher than in February 2001; there also appears to be a tendency, albeit a marginal one, for the hottest lines to show the largest changes between the two observations. Results from DROXO. III. Observation, source list and X-ray properties of sources detected in the "Deep Rho Ophiuchi XMM-Newton Observation"

X-rays from very young stars are powerful probes to investigate the mechanisms at work in the very first stages of the star formation and the origin of X-ray emission in very young stars. We present results from a 500 ks long observation of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud with a XMM-Newton large program named DROXO, aiming at studying the X-ray emission of deeply embedded Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). The data acquired during the DROXO program were reduced with SAS software, and filtered in time and energy to improve the signal to noise of detected sources; light curves and spectra were obtained. Context: The comparison of observed counts in a given sky direction with predictions by Galactic models yields constraints to the spatial distribution and the stellar birthrate of young stellar populations. In this work we present the results of the analysis of the stellar content of the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey (XBSS). ChandraX‐Ray Observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster. II. Relationship between X‐Ray Activity Indicators and Stellar Parameters

Using the results of our first paper on the Chandra HRC observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), here we explore the relation between the coronal activity of its 1-Myr-old pre-main sequence population and stellar parameters. We find that median X-ray luminosities of low mass stars (M/M_sun < 3) increase with increasing mass and decreasing stellar age. Brown dwarfs (0.03 < M/M_sun < 0.08) follow the same trend with mass. From M~0.1 to M~0.5M_sun, median L_X/L_bol values increase by about half an order of magnitude and then remain constant at ~10^-3.5 for the mass range from 0.5 to 3.0 M/M_sun. The stellar population of the Rosat North Ecliptic Pole survey. II. Spectral analysis

X-ray surveys allow to identify young, main-sequence stars in the solar neighborhood. Young, stellar samples, selected according to their activity, can be used to determine the stellar birthrate in the last billion years. The ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole survey (NEP), with its moderately deep sensitivity (fluxes ~10^(-14) erg cm^(-2) sec^(-1)), is the best survey, to date, able to sample the intermediate-age (10^8 - 10^9 years) nearby population. The identification process of NEP X-ray sources resulted in 144 X-ray sources having a normal stellar counterpart, with an excess of yellow stars with respect to model predictions. A self-consistent approach to the reflection component in 4U 1705-44

High-resolution spectroscopy has recently revealed in many neutron-star Low-Mass X-ray binaries that the shape of the broad iron line observed in the 6.4-6.97 keV range is consistently well fitted by a relativistically smeared line profile. We show here spectral fitting results using a newly developed self-consistent reflection model on XMM-Newton data of the LMXB 4U 1705-44 during a period when the source was in a bright soft state. This reflection model adopts a blackbody prescription for the shape of the impinging radiation field, that we physically associate with the boundary layer emission. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Chandra Observation of the Persistent Emission from the Dipping Source XB 1916-053

We present the results of a 50 ks long Chandra observation of the dipping source XB 1916-053. During the observation two X-ray bursts occurred and the dips were not present at each orbital period. From the zero-order image we estimate the precise X-ray coordinates of the source with a 90% uncertainty of 0.6''. In this work we focus on the spectral study of discrete absorption features, during the persistent emission, using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra satellite. We detect, for the first time in the 1st-order spectra of XB 1916-053, absorption lines associated to Ne X, Mg XII, Si XIV, and S XVI, and confirm the presence of the Fe XXV and Fe XXVI abso…
