The Nexus Knowledge-Market and Innovation in University Education: Lessons Learned from University Start Ups

2013

The pace of evolution of the university education lags behind the changes in the labour market and it is necessary to accelerate the innovation in the University education to prepare young people to face a new world order. An empirical search among a relevant sample of the start ups of the University of Palermo has been carried out in order to identify possible guidelines for the innovation of several curricula. The authors selected the founders of the new companies as privileged witnesses of the connection between knowledge and market due to their experience gained in commercialize knowledge acquired through their university education. The empirical search pointed out several regularities,…

Using Unfold-PCA for batch-to-batch start-up process understanding and steady-state identification in a sequencing batch reactor

2007

In chemical and biochemical processes, steady-state models are widely used for process assessment, control and optimisation. In these models, parameter adjustment requires data collected under nearly steady-state conditions. Several approaches have been developed for steady-state identification (SSID) in continuous processes, but no attempt has been made to adapt them to the singularities of batch processes. The main aim of this paper is to propose an automated method based on batch-wise unfolding of the three-way batch process data followed by a principal component analysis (Unfold-PCA) in combination with the methodology of Brown and Rhinehart 2 for SSID. A second goal of this paper is to…

Electrical conductivity as a state indicator for the start-up period of anaerobic fixed-bed reactors.

2016

The aim of this work was to analyse the applicability of electrical conductivity sensors for on-line monitoring the start-up period of an anaerobic fixed-bed reactor. The evolution of bicarbonate concentration and methane production rate was analysed. Strong linear relationships between electrical conductivity and both bicarbonate concentration and methane production rate were observed. On-line estimations of the studied parameters were carried out in a new start-up period by applying simple linear regression models, which resulted in a good concordance between both observed and predicted values. Electrical conductivity sensors were therefore identified as an interesting method for monitori…

Birth and growth in new metal‐based manufacturing and business service firms in Finland

2001

This study examined factors influencing the growth of new firms in metal‐based manufacturing and business services in Finland over the three first years of their operation. The factors affecting the growth of a new firm were found in the start‐up phase, in the characteristics of the entrepreneur and of the firm, and in the firm’s environment. Growth was especially explained by the know‐how and changes in the strategic behaviour of the entrepreneur and by the firm’s environment. New firmshad equal chances for growth irrespective of their locality. Instead, growth was affected by changes in a firm’s competitive situation, and, especially in the more developed service centres, growth was depen…

Diaspora Start-Up Programs and Creative Industries: Evidence from Romania

2021

Romania is one of the main countries of origin for intra-European migration. The national authorities recently implemented the first major program —Diaspora Start-up—to support the business initiatives of Romanian citizens who live abroad and who are interested in opening a business in their home country. This scheme was developed in parallel with a broader program—Romania Start-up Plus—which was designed to support the entrepreneurial initiatives of individuals residing inside the country. These programs have already supported over 8,600 non-agricultural start-ups created in urban areas. This study conducted a comparative analysis of the two programs based on different criteria and explore…
