Testing hypotheses in evolutionary ecology with imperfect detection: capture-recapture structural equation modeling.

2012

8 pages; International audience; Studying evolutionary mechanisms in natural populations often requires testing multifactorial scenarios of causality involving direct and indirect relationships among individual and environmental variables. It is also essential to account for the imperfect detection of individuals to provide unbiased demographic parameter estimates. To cope with these issues, we developed a new approach combining structural equation models with capture-recapture models (CR-SEM) that allows the investigation of competing hypotheses about individual and environmental variability observed in demographic parameters. We employ Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling in a Bayesian frame…

Estimation of Granger causality through Artificial Neural Networks: applications to physiological systems and chaotic electronic oscillators

2021

One of the most challenging problems in the study of complex dynamical systems is to find the statistical interdependencies among the system components. Granger causality (GC) represents one of the most employed approaches, based on modeling the system dynamics with a linear vector autoregressive (VAR) model and on evaluating the information flow between two processes in terms of prediction error variances. In its most advanced setting, GC analysis is performed through a state-space (SS) representation of the VAR model that allows to compute both conditional and unconditional forms of GC by solving only one regression problem. While this problem is typically solved through Ordinary Least Sq…

Dynamic Models of International Environmental Agreements: A Differential Game Approach

2012

This article provides a survey of dynamic models of international environmental agreements (IEAs). The focus is on environmental problems that are caused by a stock pollutant as are the cases of the acid rain and climate change. For this reason, the survey only reviews the literature that utilizes dynamic state-space games to analyze the formation of international agreements to control pollution. The survey considers both the cooperative approach and the noncooperative approach. In the case of the latter, the survey distinguishes between the models that assume binding agreements and those that assume the contrary. An evaluation of the state of the art is presented in the conclusions along w…

A state-space approach to mathematical modeling and parameters identification of vehicle frontal crash

2014

In this paper a state-space estimation procedure that relies on the time-domain analysis of input and output signals is used for mathematical modeling of vehicle frontal crash. The model is a double-spring–mass–damper system, whereby the front mass and real mass represent the chassis and the passenger compartment, respectively. It is observed that the dynamic crash of the model is closer to the dynamic crash from experimental when the mass of the chassis is greater than the mass of the passenger compartment. The dynamic crash depends on pole placement and the estimated parameters. It is noted that when the poles of the model are closer to zero, the dynamic crash of the model is far from the…

Partial stability for specific growth rate control biotechnological fed-batch processes

2004

In this paper, the problem of the specific growth rate control in biological reactions in fed-batch mode is dealt with. It is assumed that only part of the state is measurable on-line, namely biomass and volume. Moreover, no estimation of the specific growth rate is used. An unbounded manifold is tracked using a partial state feedback. Then, techniques for partial stability, i.e., only with respect to part of the variables, are used in order to analyze the problem.

A local linear black-box identification technique for power converters modeling

2009

In this paper, a black-box modeling technique for power electronic converters, also used in automotive environment is presented. The aim of this work is to provide a simple yet versatile and powerful tool to schematize complex electric devices in vehicular appliances, in order to fulfill the electromagnetic compatibility already during the project stage. By using input and output measured data, a composite local linear state space model is built up. Radial basis functions are used as weights for the local systems. The proposed approach is validated and applied in modeling a DC/DC converter for DC motors, a pulse width modulation inverter and a controlled rectifier.

Design and Development of a Multi-Mode, Two-Wheeled, Self-Balancing Service Platform

2019

Master's thesis Mechatronics MAS500 - University of Agder 2019 This thesis covers the design and development of a multi-mode, two-wheeled, self-balancing serviceplatform. The purpose of such a platform is to assist people with transportation tasks in crowdedspaces like airports by consuming as little space as possible and minimizing its overall footprint. This is solved by constructing a robot that can transition between bicycle and differential driveconfigurations and keep its balance in both configurations as well as in the transition processbetween them. A two-wheeled, self-balancing robot is an inherently unstable system that can bebased on the theory of an inverted pendulum. The unstabl…

Visual servo control using orthinormal polynomial

2003

This paper describes an application of the visual servoing approach to vision-based control in robotics. The basic idea addresses the use of a vision sensor in the feedback loop within the controlled vision framework. It consists in tracking of arbitrary 3-D objects travelling at unknown velocities in a 2-D space (depth is given as known). Once the necessary modeling stage is performed, the framework becomes one of automatic control, and naturally stability, performance and robustness questions arise. Here, we consider to track line segments corresponding to the edges extracted from the image being analyzed. Two representations for a line segment are presented and discussed, and an appropri…

Graphical models for estimating dynamic networks

2012

Rece…

Hidden Oscillations In The Closed-Loop Aircraft-Pilot System And Their Prevention* *This work was supported by Russian Science Foundation (project 14…

2016

Abstract The paper is devoted to studying and prevention of a special kind of oscillations-the Pilot Involved Oscillations (PIOs) which may appear in man-machine closed-loop dynamical systems. The PIO of categories II and III are defined as essentially non-linear unintended steady fluctuations of the piloted aircraft, generated due to pilot efforts to control the aircraft with a high precision. The main non-linear factor leading to the PIO is, generally, rate limitations of the aircraft control surfaces, resulting in a delay in the response of the aircraft to pilot commands. In many cases, these oscillations indicate presence of hidden, rather than self-excited attractors in the aircraft-pi…
