Does anaerobic threshold correlate with maximal lactate steady-state?
1992
The aim of this study was to compare the 'anaerobic threshold' (AnT) of subjects determined during a continuous 2-min incremental exercise test until exhaustion and the 'maximal lactate steady-state' (BLaSsmax) determined during prolonged exercise at constant loads corresponding to the subjects' AnT and/or 5-25% above and below it. Seventeen subjects performed an incremental exercise test and 1-5 prolonged exercise tests on a cycle ergometer until exhaustion at intervals of 1 week, and work rates, oxygen uptake (VO2) values and brachial venous blood lactate (BLa) levels were measured. It was proposed that when exercising at a constant workload below AnT, BLa would fall after having reached …
Effect of consumption of a carob pod inositol-enriched beverage on insulin sensitivity and inflammation in middle-aged prediabetic subjects.
2016
This study assessed the effects of an inositol-enriched beverage (IEB) on blood glucose levels and inflammation status in subjects with an impaired fasting glucose (IFG) state according to body mass index (BMI). This was a 12 week, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial employing forty-four IFG subjects (fasting glucose levels 100-125 mg dl-1) that were divided into two intervention groups: one receiving a IEB (n = 24) containing mainly pinitol (2.0 g twice a day), and the other a sweetened beverage based on sucrose (SB; n = 20). Anthropometric and biochemical measurements, postprandial and fasting nocturnal glycaemia (continuous glucose monitoring system), and inflammatory parameters (…
A telemedicine platform to improve clinical parameters in paranoid schizophrenia patients: Results of a one-year randomized study
2018
Objective The study objective was to test a smartphone-based MONEO platform designed to improve the clinical condition of paranoid schizophrenia patients. Telemedicine treatment is considered to be as effective as traditional treatment in outpatient clinics. Method A total of 290 patients with paranoid schizophrenia in the symptomatic remission state were recruited to this 12-month multicenter, open-label randomized trial. A study group (n = 191) received a smartphone with the MONEO platform installed. Patients conducted cognitive training twice a week. Patients' mental state was assessed every month via teleconference. A placebo group (n = 99) received a platform with functionality limited…
Prevalence and characterization of cardiac involvement in Hunter syndrome.
2011
To assess the prevalence of cardiovascular signs and symptoms in a large group of patients with Hunter syndrome, an X-linked metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase.The Hunter Outcome Survey was established to characterize the natural history of Hunter syndrome and to assess the response to enzyme replacement therapy. Echocardiographic and electrocardiographic examination results were available for 102 patients who were enzyme replacement therapy-naïve in the Hunter Outcome Survey (median age at examination, approximately 8 years) as of Jan 23, 2009.The most common cardiovascular finding was valve disease, which was present in 63% of patients.…
Simplified Orthotopic Ileocecal Pouch (Mainz Pouch) for Bladder Substitution
2003
Objective To report operative modifications that render construction of the orthotopic Mainz pouch more simple, namely formation of the pouch using absorbable staples and utilization of the ileocecal valve as an antireflux mechanism. Patients and methods Between January 2001 and May 2002 out of 92 cystectomy cases, 21 patients (20 males and 1 female) underwent a simplified orthotopic Mainz pouch. The ureters were implanted via Wallace or Nesbit technique in the supravalvular portion of the ileocecal valve. The mean (range) age was 58 (43 - 74) years and the mean follow-up is 11.6 months (range 1 - 27). Results No staple-related complications were encountered. Four renal units (8.8 %) were d…
Management of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia in southern Italy: a retrospective analysis of the Sicilian-Calabrian Society of Urology (SSCU…
2002
Introduction: The availability of new pharmacological and surgical options is responsible for important changes in the management of symptomatic benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). The Sicilian-Calabrian Society of Urology performed a retrospective survey to assess the management of BPH in southern Italy in 1997 and 1998. Patients and Methods: A 3-page questionnaire was sent to the 36 urological units of these two regions. The real number of patients treated was required. The numbers were checked with data obtained from the Health Regional Offices. Results: Twenty-six urological units (72.3%) replied. Almost all patients underwent urin…
Long-term urinary dysfunction after mesorectal excision: a prospective study with intraoperative electrophysiological confirmation of nerve preservat…
2006
Bladder dysfunctions are well-recognized complications after nerve-sparing mesorectal excision for rectal cancer. This study sought to symptomatically analyze the extent of recovery from major and minor urinary symptoms in patients with signs of bladder denervation.Sixty-two patients with mesorectal excision for rectal cancer were investigated prospectively. Pelvic autonomic nerve preservation (PANP) was assessed macroscopically and with the aid of intraoperative electrical stimulation of pelvic autonomic nerves (INS). Bladder function was evaluated with the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and the Quality of life index (Qol). Median follow-up was 20 months (range 3-40 months).Fo…
Prostasomes as zinc ligands in human seminal plasma
2004
Prostasomes are small vesicles, containing zinc, secreted by prostate in human seminal plasma and showing a physiological role on sperm properties. In this study, the possible correspondence between prostasomes and a prostatic high molecular weight protein complex, recently indicated as zinc ligand, has been investigated. Isolated prostasomes, examined by scanning electron microscopy, were dialysed to evaluate their zinc binding capacity. Furthermore, seminal plasma Sephadex G-75 elution was carried out before and after prostasome removal. Prostasome preparations, containing typical vesicles of 50-500 nm, showed a positive correlation between their zinc and protein levels. They were able to…
SPECIFIC COMPLICATIONS OF RADICAL PERINEAL PROSTATECTOMY: A SINGLE INSTITUTION STUDY OF MORE THAN 600 CASES
2004
Although groups at several institutions have long experience with radical perineal prostatectomy (RPP), only few reports of larger series describe associated complications, mostly without reporting management options in detail. We analyzed specific perioperative and postoperative complications of the perineal approach and management strategies thereof. The medical records of 630 patients who underwent RPP between January 1997 and May 2003 were retrospectively reviewed in regard to complications and their management. Median followup was 8 months (range 1 to 68).Major complications requiring open surgical intervention were noted in 11 patients (1.7%) for a total surgical revision rate of 2.4% …
Prevalence, Incidence Estimation, Risk Factors and Characterization of Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome in Urological Hospital Outpat…
2007
Abstract: Purpose: We evaluated the prevalence and estimated the incidence and risk factors of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome in urological hospital outpatients in Italy. Materials and Methods: From January to June 2006 patients from 28 Italian urological centers who were between 25 and 50 years old with symptoms of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome were consecutively enrolled in this prospective epidemiological case-control study. A total of 152 subjects of similar age, race and area of origin who were investigated for infertile couples but were otherwise healthy served as controls. All subjects provided a medical history and underwent different symptom sco…
